The Minecraft thing isn't that complicated, but the guessing game will make it look like it. Crossbows are 2-step bows that fire further. Bows. You hold back until ready to fire. Sword/axe plain melee, but axe is good on shields. All these things have appropriate enchanting benefits like more damage or use up slower. Potions will be mostly heal slowly, instant heal, instant harm, slow harm, or buffs like jumping or defense. Purple bad, ugly green maybe poison.
