If that is a OEM coilpack harness, there should be a loop in the back of it for the timing pickup. However from my personal experience, you should use a old spark plug wire to make a bridge between the coilpack and spark plug for the pickup to get a more accurate reading (FSM even says to). Sometimes there is interference with the other coilpacks/wiring to the #1 cylinder and the timing light would be sporadic. 1) warm up car to normal operating temp 2) turn off car, unplug TPS 3) start car, rev 3 times to go to timing mode 4) adjust timing 5) check idle speed, adj if necessary 6) turn off car, replug TPS 7) start car and check this with a bridge from #1 coilpack to spark plug is the only way I found to accurately adjust the timing on my s14 SR
@@hunterhaley1343 I believe FSM says to 2000, I usually rev it 3 times to 2000 after unplugging the TPS starting and the idle seems to be stable to set timing.
Thanks for the explanation mate 🙏 I have a SR20 black top with a mechanical distributor cap, if I check timing with the TPS connected it’s perfect spot on but if I disconnect the TPS it is completely off should adjust timing again or is that only for the models with the electronic distributor system? Would be incredible if you could reply thank you 🙏
Wow, thank you so much for being so well-spoken and easy to follow. This is exactly what I needed to know while just doing the final tweaks on my s13 Silvia. I appreciate your time. -Thanks again!
Thanks for the tutorial brother 🙏 I have a SR20 black top with a mechanical distributor cap, if I check timing with the TPS connected it’s perfect spot on but if I disconnect the TPS the rpms go to like 2k on timing it is completely off should adjust timing again or is that only for the models with the electronic distributor system? I appreciate that. Thank you for watching. Sorry if the quality is low right now. It takes awhile for the 4K resolution to process on RUclips for a video this long.
Good informative videos! Simple and clean content! Love it man! Can you give info about swapping out ka24de for sr20det? And the things you need to do the swap. Thanks!
Do you avoid adjusting the throttle cam/idle screw to effect the tps voltage? My voltage was high and the cam was opening the throttle. Haven’t been able to find it in the FSM and appreciate any info.
Great video man! I was wondering what your issue in the end of the video was my car misfires similarly to that but I’ve changed the plugs injectors and coil packs
Injector seals ended up being torn on two cylinders. I was in a hurry and didn’t lube them well before installing, so they pinch tore. Ordered new seal o-rings, lubed them up a little with Vasoline, then installed. Problem solved.
@@Inner_Sanctum awesome thanks for the reply! I didn’t lube mine either but i took them out and checked and they were okay so i lubed them up but maybe they tore a little bit
@@koukikev8813 yeah, mine looked okay too. However, my intake runner was filling up with fuel. I would turn the car on, let it run for awhile then shut it off. Pulled off the upper intake manifold and the lower runner was pooling with fuel. I knew immediately at that point.
Awesome video! Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought that you need to use an ignition cable between the first coil pack and it’s spark plug like a bridge in order to get an accurate reading since the SR20 doesn’t use a distributor/ignition cable style of ignition system? In other words you would clamp the timing light to an ignition wire instead of a coil pack signal?
Yes use an old spark plug cable as a bridge between coilpack and the spark plug to get a most accurate reading. If you don't do that, there is supposed to be a small wire in a loop on the back of the OEM coil pack harness specifically for timing but I always found using a old spark plug wire as a bridge to be the best. S14 SR FSM has the procedure
Nope, it drains down before I ever pull the filter off. If anything, it’s cleaner/easier than having it on the bottom where the filter holds the oil and it gets everywhere.
Torn injector o-rings on 3 and 4 due to a hasty install. Bought all new o-rings, used a little petroleum jelly and gently pressed the rail in. Problem solved.
@@Inner_Sanctum I wanted an Sr20det for a conversion into a fwd car but all the Sr20det seem to be rear wheel drive setups. The Sr20de are front wheel drive setups but they use distributors and spark plug wires which I hate.

this with a bridge from #1 coilpack to spark plug is the only way I found to accurately adjust the timing on my s14 SR
Hey mate thanks, 1 question tho, do I have to rev it 3 times to a specific amount of revs or just any amount of revs 3 times?
@@hunterhaley1343 I believe FSM says to 2000, I usually rev it 3 times to 2000 after unplugging the TPS starting and the idle seems to be stable to set timing.

Best video description on timing and TPS adjustment. Timed it last night using the steps provided here, testing TPS today. You're the man, man!
Good video brother! So many people are afraid of timing. Think it's way over complicated when it's really fool proof! Keep it up!
Hey brother when u gonna post more hardbody videos? Oh I'm waiting on those stickers lol
Hey buddy. Currently posting a video and towards the end I gave u a shout out. I dont have many followers but hope it helps.

Woah im impressed by that commentary. A GREAT video. thumbs up! :)

Can we change sr20 come with distributor change to coil on plug ?

0 degrees (TDC) is mechanical timing, 15° btdc is ignition timing.
so what is the timing gun actually for??
When I checked my tps at wot it only has 3.2 volts instead of the 4volts. How do I get it to 4 volts? It’s making it run lean at wot

Ok. Now how do you set the timing! You showed us how to check it but if your timing is off, how do you correct it?!
I literally explained that in the video... you adjust it by rotating the CAS forward or back to advance or retard the timing.

I have the same multimeter as his but I don’t get .45 volts mine reads 4.5 even on 12v setting

How does this Sr20 have coil packs I thought they were all distributor engines
T_money_ THIRD DET engines use coil packs. DE [NA] engines use distributors.
