When I was small, I was persuaded that Tyrande is talking tigress and the rider is just protecting her. (much like kodo beast).
Stroivan and huntress
Only played campaign as a kiddo. I considered the custom games to be boring - so Tyrande was the only Huntress I knew :D
Stroivan Did you even play the game?
play or played?
play; his grammar is correct
at 2:35 the rifleman "spell animation" was used in the human campaign in RoC when you have to defend the town for 30 mins. At the starting cutscene, there are some footmen and riflemen "preparing for battle" and the riflemen do just that animation when they fire into the air
The absolute worst mission to do if you are new to the game.
@@SpookyWatcher I feel ya.
@@oneblacksun
My solution to winning that mission as a kid was spamming towers, only to then learn that enemiy long range siege units exist which then proceeded to Meat Wagon plow through my all-in-resource investment tower clusters.
@@joshuakim5240 I always did the tower spam too, but I also kept a small group of units around each entrance, as well as keeping a small group with Arthas as kind of a "rolling defense" when it looked like one entrance was being hit harder than the others. Always works pretty well for me.
@@SpookyWatcher when I was a kid I'd just.. *furiously types in Whosyourdaddy*
The war wagon transport was freaking broken, that's why we removed that ability. Broken AF... -_- Not unlike early versions of the troll batriders.
I can see how. A unit as absurdly durable as the tank having Riflemen shooting from it while also having AA batteries and anti-building attack would completely nullify the purpose of any other units just from how horridly overpowered that would have been.
hey can ask something
5:25 Uther's book I think is the logo for a metal band named HammerFall. The likeness is uncanny and also fitting Sam's metal theme
Ah, you're right. You're absolutely right. That's not "TJ" at all. Good eye! There have been a lot of those references to bands throughout the series that I've completely missed since I know nothing about metal.
Was just about to type the same. Also the mascot of Hammerfall looks a bit like a WC3 Paladin with additional armor and a helmet covering the whole face so this could maybe be the origin of the hammer swinging defenders of humanity
I was about to say the same thing when the HF logo came up.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one here who likes Hammerfall.
Well Sam did draw Hammerfall album covers, You can see his signature on Crimson Thunder one
The 'stupid clown hair' is supposed to be a wolverine reference
I get that reference now, but why the bald spot on top? If that was bridged with some hair, I probably would've noticed it more quickly.
because you are looking it from bird's perspective, it would not be very distinguishable if it was not bald
i know this comment is old, but the reason for that is not modeled after his actual hair but his mask which is way more pronounced i guess that would explain the weird bald spot then again the reason why they probably remained unused its because the of the clear similarities.
I know it's an old comment, but that unit always reminded me of Heihachi. Or a crossover between him and Logan(Wolv).
It even has a wolverine skin in Hiveworkshop.
I was scared to death at the end, I thought I caught a virus as even my computers cooling got silent.
I, on the other hand, saw that it's the end of the video
12:20 THAT HORSE IS AMAZING...
Give it a lick!
I do miss the ballista. It makes more sense, looks better and has an excellent nostalgia factor to it.
I remember first playing and thinking to myself why isn't it called a ballista? Such a fun word, ballista.
Warhammer "created" My Little Pony next. They also founded RUclips and internet video streaming. As well as the oxygen you are breathing right now. You owe them money for that you copyright thief you.
My nostalgia of Warhammer is the only thing I know about it. Copyright claims.
I love seeing people who are as into WC3 as me, I like ya dude
Agreed! This is awesome!
@Direfury yeah man, your resources are incredible tho.
So happy this series is still being worked on. I love every bit of it. Your jokes are good, your research is insightful and I love your lil "cutscenes" while you explain stuff. Hopefully you can get some answers like last time from DesignerDave. Love your work :)
Seems like when you won a match the idea was that all your units would do a victory cheer kinda animation.
Wow, why didn't I think of that? That's very likely. Kind of like on Heroes of the Storm.
Kinda like Final Fantasy 7
Kinda like Populous: The Beginning
Thank you for revealing where the “Dwarf In/Out” asset came from. I found that in the world editor and couldn’t find what it belonged to for years
This is very interesting because some of these interactions were used in DotA. Correct me if I'm wrong on some of these:
The Rifleman flare animation was used for Shrapnel.
The Lure Ward was used as Mana Ward for Pugna, which has the fairy dragon mana zap ability.
Pheonix death animation was used, well as his death animation.
Chaos Warlord was basically used as the hero Chaos Knight.
Call Storm animation was used for Impale on Lion.
There are probably 1000 more examples of unused animations being used in custom maps to make for interesting and unique abilities and units.
Later Icefrog added his own unique spell effects and animations if I recall correctly (Sonic Wave comes to mind), which means he wasn't limited to the wc3 pool.
I never played the original DotA, but I'm not surprised! I'm sure the creators made the best out of the resources they had. That's really cool!
sonic wave is naga royal guard's shockwave/carrion swarm spell
Speaking of dota, thanks to your videos, I realized how much they took from all this unused and hidden stuff and how much it's mentioned again in the standalone game Dota2. There's a witch doctor hero who can have a mask exactly the same as the one on the shadow hunter! Also, somehow, their "gyrocopter" never got copyright kicked, but in Warcraft RoC, it was? I don't know should have I said that, maybe someone will sue them now...
Also, this Warlock - Shaman - Spiritwalker thing is confusing as hell. What were they thinking?! :O
Berserker? You mean Wolverine from the ULTIMATE EPIC BATTLE map? Sorry, I can't remember the exact map, but I saw the model and the hero was called "wolverine"! xD I think the map was called D day. There was also a modified ghoul called "alien", from the movie with the same name.
I will echo the praise of all others, and to this I will add one thing: it is a testament to how engaging & involving your productions are that the end of this video completely caught me off guard. I was honestly taken aback, like "wait, WHAT, am I playing a game?" before I realized what was going on. And now I'm seriously salivating for part 2.
Oh, fantastic! I made several types of armored transporters from the warwagons also tanks with higher defense(including imunity to spells) and magical tanks, when I was a kid, I had no idea, it was supposed to be!
About Mathog: you remember that grunt with peons in cages? Grunt is nsmed as "Mathog". It is a side quest, where you must kill some centaures and open these cages with keys, that are dropping from khan. Then, he is moving into Orgrimmar and saying something like: "Thanks, we will go, bye".
I love your videos, Abelhawk, keep 'em coming!
I just want to point out a few things:
- Dragonspawn models have 'CombatCritical' and 'CombatWound' animations that look like "Stand Hit" (1:40).
- 'Stand Victory' animation (2:12) is played when you win the game.
- I don't really get what you're trying to say about Phoenix's death animation (6:44). Of course you can use the phoenix model both with and without the egg morphing thing, since the same death animation is used in both cases (the egg doesn't have its own death animation) and Blizzard even used them as creeps (Thunder Phoenixes) in The Founding of Durotar campaign (aka Rexxar Campaign).
- Bandits (7:01) have two 'Death' animations. One is called 'Death' and the other 'Death Fire'.
- What do you mean Monster Lure ward has no effect? (11:38) It does exactly what it says in the tooltip - It lures creeps to it's position.
- By the way, masked Shadow Hunter (11:12), Orc War Forge and Orc Lumber Mill (13:11) can be downloaded from Wc3c along with some other cool beta models that didn't make it into the final version of the game.
Noticed that sneaky Crypt of the Necrodancer tune...
I had to stop at 12:40 to point out that even though it looks and sounds like the tech used in this video is below standard you still know some really nice tricks with editing and put them on show. Some very interesting techniques on display and yet you didn't overuse them which impresses me even more.
Thanks, that means a lot! Yeah, I’m by no means a professional at this. I just sort of look at what I like about other RUclips videos and mimic them to the best of my ability.
i hope for part 2 soon, and hope for icons, spells and sounds xD
keep it up
Yeah i didnt know there is Callstorm icon, want to know where he found it :v i didnt find it among hidden content threads xS
its not in the game, but you can still import it as a custom icon
www.scrollsoflore.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=50&page=35
you can find it here, next 4 pages also have some interesting icons (UPGRADES FOR SHIPS OMGOD)
You forgot that originally tanks didn't have a gun, but a huge Morning star that they used to crush buildings. Later transport and tanks were combined in to a one unit.
I hope you know that I enjoy the intro with all the units running. I love to try to figure out all the units that were used. I also like the just overview of all the models and races used in the game. Thanks Abelhawk!
Just stumbled on this channel and have been binging all of your videos, this is amazing work!
Fun video to watch. Awesome work Abelhawk!
That ending freaked me the fuck out for a second...
1:55 Paladins doing the dab even before the dab was even invented.
When you mentioned the victory animation I was quickly reminded of some victory animations in Command and conquer 3 where some infantry units will cheer and wave their arms in the air if they survive a battle, however there is a victory animation for units and tanks in command and conquer generals that is if you win, the tanks fire out confetti now the night elves siege machine the glave thrower I think was swapped to a glave thrower for more of a fantasy look as the hunters/rangers (I think) threw glave weapons but they pretty much acted as a grounded mutalisk however it be interesting if the glave throwers could toggle between a glave or a balasta bolt, one for raw damage while the other is great against faster units and a slightly bigger splash damage than the other, but copy right could be plausable as there are people to this day try and claim copy right for something that existed longer than the person was born
I thought you stopped recording, welcome back, one of my favorite WC3 youtubers
some of these things are extremely good to know for map making purposes, good job on the video
I love your effort you put in every miniclip you create :3
To be fair, in Reign of Chaos, Dragonhawk riders, Priests and Sorceresses were not Blood Elves, they were High Elves, maybe that is why the change in appearance.
A very charismatic person, I could watch your stuff all day.
I love your videos man... No matter how many times I watch them they are still entertaining. Also they help me fall asleep :)
Same here! I watch them before sleeping, these videos have some relaxing vibe
My favourite model was always Sylvanas' and Shandris' 😭
Me too
Well shoot, I only have one coin left...
Just started to get into this and then (just before the end) I started to think RUclips was playing up. Enjoying the videos (watched the voice line ones) and will start looking for any others
Love that you're showing Warcraft 3 The love it deserves
I think the frost pedestal was used in the cutscene where muridin dies when it exploded
Great video as always
I was hoping for more content like this
YES! It's so good to see you back Abelhawk. You should try Starcraft!
Glad that this series is still on. I enjoyed finding the secrets and your narration is just amazing. :)
An interesting thing is that Samwise Didier drew two variants of the Troll Shadow Hunter hero - one without the mask and one with. You can compare them here: i.imgur.com/OKZE4tx.png
I have no idea which of these is older, though :P
If I remember correctly, the Steam Tank was also meant to have a wrecking ball in addition to the mounted riflemen in the early versions of the game. Behold: i.imgur.com/PascFQo.jpg
Whoa! Totally missed that screen shot of the Steam Tank! I'll have to add that in to part 2.
And that's interesting about the Shadow Hunter... now that I think about it I think I've seen both on separate occasions, but I never realized the mask is the only difference between the two pics. Thanks!
2 years have passed and i still watch this video. i love warcraft
@Dark Craft damm
2:47
youre welcome
damn i love this series soo much ! i love the nostalgia i feel after every your vid about wc3
Oh, good to see you back. :DD Excellent video
Your videos are all amazing! I really love your easter egg videos!
12:34 warlock:hey shaman you are in spirit walker's place
Shaman:oh sorry
Spirit walker:sorry im late
Warlock: :/
This is so much information. I only heard about the arthas upside down book.
6:26 made me almost spit out my drink...idk why 9 battleships pulling a flying Dutchman makes me laugh so much, but it does.
Nice that Blizz put in the effort to make models, icons and animations they would never use in the campaign themselves but might have understood that it would be very useful for community map makers. :D
changing from a more generic medieval machine to a more specific one isn't done to avoid copyright, it's to ensure copyright. Balistas cannot be filed away as a copyright you own, but Blizzard Activision can, and will, sue someone else who puts a glaive throwing siege weapon in their game now.
Some of the best work I've ever seen
According to lore, Original shamanism came from Draenor which is where Orcs and Draenei come from. Draenor orc shamans were called spirit walkers in the first place, and, after Gul'dan's corruption, Spirit walkers became warlocks. That might explain everything.
No, the term "spirit walkers" (at least in established lore) has historically only referred to tauren shaman/druids. Orcish shamans were always just called shamans back on Draenor.
Thanks!, awesome, I didnt knew all about that!!
most amazing video ever seen. thank you so much!
Love the idea of using the Battleship birth animation for the surprise attack submarines 😂😂
Uther's book has the logo of a metal band called Hammerfall, which is an easter egg village in wow, and Samwise Didier makes the covers and arts for them :)
Sweet! Thanks for letting me know!
5:27 Those so called T and J that Uther have in his book, are either eerily similar to, or IS the HF crest that the swedish metal band Hammerfall have used time and time again throughout their career. A band for whom Samwise Didier has done alot of coverart work for.
Isn't Hammerfall a city in the WC Universe?
Man that end ;)
Man, you really got me. I thought my session is over. I almost got a heart attack.
5:28 Actually, I think that is an H that is in reference to the Power Metal band Hammerfall, especially with the way it is stylized. This is more likely than you think given that the artist Samwise Didier that makes the art for their album covers is also one of those that work for Blizzard. The area Hammerfall for instance is a reference to them as well.
Great video! Cool ending
I can't believe it's been 3 years :O
This is so great!
Necropolis had a pool around it. It is still visible in its icon. Also there is a haunted gold mine icon, but the one in use is the regular gold mine icon. Lich Icon and Models changed from roc to tft. Snapdragons' model is blue by default, but the unit is colored to look green. Its icon is blue. Ancient of Wonders used to be the Den of Wonders (icon still exists)
You forgot to mention that the different Blademaster variants have different Bladestorms.
making the siege engine load & unload units is pretty basic, but how did u change its attack animation to just have the riflemen projectile effect thingies?
i wanna implement that in my own map but im not quite sure how to do it. did u do it in the object editor only or via triggers?
The rifleman animation is used in a cinematic in the human campaign in reign if chaos
In a custom campaign "Dwarf Campaign" they mention that Steam Tank-Siege Engine thing. There is a dialogue which says: "Given the fact that the machines are effective only against buildings, calling them 'Steam Tanks' may actually be a little misleading. The term 'Siege Engine' would describe their actual purpose much better." So it's like an easter egg of easter egg.
I can swear i remember some point in the campaigns spirit wolves lvl 3 do have bloodlust ability. Or i just confuse it with Beastmaster's quillboars
I used to edit Azeroth Wars LR back in 2014. Pit Lords also have walk and running animation like to Koto Beast. xdd
That berserker looks badass
i just have to ask… what is the name of the music that plays when Archimond is killed? i noticed you played it in this vid and i just cant find it….
I'm not sure if this is the case but at 13:25; - other than being a reference to wolverine - I think it's a reference to a unit from another RTS game called 'Battle Realms', that unit is called Berserker as well with 2 claw blades in both hands, red hair (maybe the reason why it's fel orc not a normal one), and from a faction that is somewhat similar to the Orc's relatively primitive lifestyle.
1:50 Arthas dabbing with that hammer boi
The slave master was used in the Warchasers official custom map made by blizzard.
''Wirt's Leg'' 8:41 A reference to Diablo 2 where you find this item in Tristram!
Rifleman's spell animation is used in the old DotA maps.
Excellent video
You can use Human frigate texture on Night Elf frigate model and you got high elf or blood elf frigate 🙂
Hey Abel... This has nothing to do with models but.. Just in case you dont know yet, I recently discovered that if you use "DEVOUR" skill of kodo beasts, dragons, dragon turtles on enemy units or creeps that hold items/tomes... the items will be gone and destroyed along with the creep or enemy units once they get digested...
so yeah, for me, its pretty unnecessary skill to be used
Mathog is basically a grunt in the founding of durotar traped in a a cage with his clan in act 2
Genius ending dude
5:29 Nope... that is Hammerfall logo :D
Warlock are shaman that turned from the spirits. Thats why they still had some of their spells.
8:41 the Animation remembers me of muradin‘s Death Scene
It's been so long since this game was released and people are still playing it and learning new stuff about it. How awesome is that?! Blizzard should really pay more attention to their classic games! Still waiting for them to get integrated into Battle.net 2.0 and added to the Battle.net app.
That was scorpion, balista is just huge crossbow, scorpions use different "energy compressor".
At 3:00 how do you get to the menu to change that option in the world editor?
It's in the Unit Editor. Just click a unit and find that value to change it. Obviously it doesn't work on units whose models didn't change with the expansion, but it can give you those old ballistas, catapults, steam tanks, and a lot of old blood elf models.
Thank you so much for the help. Took me ages to find that menu lol
nice stuff
What's the track played at 10:35 I've been looking for it through the soundtrack but can't find it
It sounds like a variation of A Call to Arms (ruclips.net/video/qXVmZuPOzU0/видео.html), so it's probably from World of Warcraft and not from Warcraft 3.
a lot of these are explained trough campaign warlock for example in in orc campaign what you get instead of shamans after drinking manoroth blood in the cenarius mission
I don't know why but I laughed so hard at the "stupid clown hair"
YES THANK YOU!!
Uthers book seems to have writing inside pretty similar to HF logo of metal band Hammerfall.
The Illidan wagon is for the TFT human mission where Illidan is caged and you have to prevent Maiev to bring him to her base (I think)
Presumably it was indeed for that map, but the current model used is instead a cage. Perhaps the model was going to switch between it and the other model depending on who controlled it.
I CAME HERE FOR CHOCOLATE EGGS AND WHAT I GOT WAS
a rather informative video in which i enjoyed every second of it. thank ye for make ye content #bless
Wait....that hack who gave us The Order 1886 used to be a Blizzard employee?! Unrelated, but this was something I noticed long ago, ALL the creeps are essentially recycled assets. Either they were unused units from earlier in development (death knights) or they're just slightly reskinned versions of playable units, from the obvious wolves to less obvious, such as murlocs being heavily reskinned ghouls, and succubus being even more heavily reskinned archers with their shooting animations replaced by a very basic poke-melee attack.
Did anyone ever notice that after you install FT, it changes the murloc model to remove the back fins and replace them with spikes EVEN in the original game. Weird.
Oh man, I never realized that they used to have fins instead of spikes. How could I have missed that? However, they didn't replace them in the original game-if you play the Exodus of the Horde campaign in Reign of Chaos, the murlocs Thrall encounters have fins.
