In Japan, they get constant coverage that there's a tsunami, with live footage, a map of where the tsunami will hit and information on the tsunami. In the US, they get a white/black screen with eerie tones before and after, with audio with little information, for like 2 minutes.
Those "eerie" tones (before the double-tone attention signal) actually carry binary data, hence their uncanniness to the ear, but those are designed to activate (trigger the hardware to either re-transmit or alert people) *EVERYTHING* that was designed to parse those even if the sound source sits in the other corner of a room
its because i think usa is big, every state has the same tv channel, meanwhile japan is just an island with a big risk of tsunamis, the inland usa wouldve gotten a tsunami warning. thats why i think that
@@untodesu While a device could theoretically be made to listen for these tones just being played in the room, I'm not aware that these devices actually exist. It's mainly meant for other TV and radio stations that are listening to the one sending the alert. There are also NOAA Weather Radios that listen for tones on weather radio frequencies, but if you just play the tone next to it with a speaker, it won't hear it.
(probably rough translation on my end) It really is scarier than J-Alert. Hearing those eerie tones at night just makes it even worse. The first tones aren’t even supposed to be the bad ones 😩
I live in Napa County, although I think that if there was actually a tsunami, Napa County would be the least affected or not affected at all because Napa, Yountville, American Canyon, St Helena and Calistoga are very inland and surrounded by big mountains.
According to the USGS (United States Geological Survey): "A tidal wave is a shallow water wave caused by the gravitational interactions between the Sun, Moon, and Earth ("tidal wave" was used in earlier times to describe what we now call a tsunami.) A tsunami is an ocean wave triggered by large earthquakes that occur near or under the ocean, volcanic eruptions, submarine landslides, or by onshore landslides in which large volumes of debris fall into the water."

@@t_aikutsuThe Hilo area sustained massive tsunami damage triggered by the Great Chilean Earthquake of 1960. That earthquake had a magnitude of 9.5, the biggest ever documented by seismic tools.
the earthquake was as i remember 6 upper or 7, basically over 8.6 and it was under the sea and it made big tsunami wawes that it could hit places that was near the ocean. even though it wasnt more than 1 meter it is still considered as tsunami and not big waves.
A tsunami caused by a magnitude 8.9 (later confirmed to be 9.1) earthquake will cause a tsunami that spreads all the way across the ocean. Tsunami waves also appeared in Chile, though greatly reduced in height. In Japan, waves reached 133 feet high; in Hawaii they only reached 10 feet. And in California the tsunami was only 8 feet. Hope this helps.
No, only small waves although. Also, there were small waves from the Tonga Islands to Pacific California. But I have a question, does your country know English, I want to make sure you can read this so that you know.
@North Texas EAS and Sirens Hawaii actually got flooded from the 3/11 Tsunami. If it wasn't for that island, the waves on the US mainland could've been worse.
