- After many months, the review you've been waiting for is here. The Nyos Quantum skimmer is impressive, a silent yet vital part of my 400g reef's filtration. Did I mention it is silent?! Easy to clean, it breaks down completely. Feel free to add your own personal experiences with Nyos skimmers in the comments! I'll try to answer your questions as best I can.

Thanks to A.J. Merrifield for helping film this review. Loved your input and ideas!
I’m living for the dramatic music in the background over this!
😄
My wife purchased the nyos 160 for my CHRISTMAS Gift. She saw it. on my wish list. OMG ! I LOVE THIS SHIMMER. Worth every penny.
Welcome back, it's been a long time.
Great video, as always.
Fantastic review, thank you so much!
WOOT! I see a notification for Melevsreef and I can't help but cheer!
Great Review. That skimmer truly is a beast.
Not a bad price for that size of the skimmer! I will definitely consider it for my next big system! Thanks for sharing!
ABOUTTIME!!! brb getting some popcorn and drank. I need to hear this!
Fantastic review, thanks for the update. I like several mentions easy to clean, low wattage, quiet and $150 for motor replacement. How is customer service treating you on that prototype skimmer? I've seen ReefingTexan's review on his 220 and how he has been ignored on an issue with the collection cup sticking.
+Alex Juarez A few days ago, I read on his video comments that his skimmer was replaced by Nyos.
I was thinking about getting one, was just waiting for a review. You just convince me. Awesome job as always. Cheers from france ;)
Finally! it came out! well done sir!
Finally a new video!!
Great review, Mark.
Back to making vids! Great job!
Great information. Just ordered one for my SPS Frag system.
I just bought the Nyos 120 skimmer. Hopefully I'll install it tomorrow.
Great review ! Thank you for the previous message .
awesome vid. We missed you. Business must be great. Thank you for info.
thank you for this wonderful review it help me to make my decision to buy this skimmer thank you
I didn't know these were available in North America... as I have 2 of the 220's on my systems, and I love them
about time!!
+Jared Fell So what did you do to pass the time? ;)
hey mate! im an aussie, i live on the gold coast :D to pass the time i have a 1600L tank :)
Im a Fan of your vid's :)
Very nice. Got a picture or video of it?
But will it fit in my Nuvo 10 back chamber?
+SPL ;) Time to upgrade your reef.
melevsreef Just downsized from a 20 cube lol, but man one day I'll have a similar setup to yours... in the next a few decades of course! :-)
I sell sledgehammers...!
Might have to melt it down first
awesome job....I think I need to stock up on oranges....
+TheScott21467 Right?! lol
Nice review Marc! For what it's worth my BM Curve 7 always has condensation in the collection cup like that. Still works awesome though
+echopiece79 Thanks! Perhaps part of that was due to cooler room temperatures versus reef temperature. I'm not seeing that condensation now that things are warming up a tad. My A/C is running daily again. :)
So its been a year since this Review hows that Quantum 120 on the frag tank holding up? Possibly a Quick review on that one?
Thanks Sir !
A+ for that final orange comment 😂👍
Awesome Video Sir .. Extremely informative for an aspiring reefer like me .... I love the back ground soundtracks as well.. May I have a fill on that please?
Thanks. I didn't understand your question, though.
Sorry for the local slang Sir. I would like to download the soundtracks on the video ... Sorry for the trouble Sir.
No problem. The music I used is linked in the video description. Hope that helps.
Thank You Sir
Do you ship products to KSA ??
you could try some plumbers tape around it to make it that little bit thicker and a tighter fit for those parts that fall out
+Gaz T-Rex I mentioned that at 27:40 but worried the tape might get sucked into the needlewheel impeller and damage something.
you could put it so its not close the edge maybe? ive used it for many things and haven't had it unravel
+Gaz T-Rex I was thinking about maybe putting three dots of Super Glue Gel at 4 o'clock, 8 o'clock, and 12 o'clock. Let them dry into slightly raised bumps and then provide enough friction for that one part.
yeah that could be a good idea too
sooo....did the smaller one have the same loose venturi tube problem of was it "fixed" by then/on that model? and as usual...thanks for the great video/review.
The smaller Nyos skimmer was perfect, as explained in the video. No issue at all.
Thanks for clearing that up. They look amazing. I guess now I just gotta save up.
Hi Marc. Great video! I just purchased the Nyos 300- love it! I have the same loose Venturi - how have you managed this?? I appreciate your help! Thanks again..
What I did was apply a drop of super glue gel on three equidistant spots (4pm, 8pm, 12pm if you think of the circle as a clock), let it dry, then sanded it slightly. Those tiny mounds of glue create enough friction to keep it in place. Hope that makes sense to you.
Thanks Marc!! You're the best! Great advice!
Just bought (Sept. 2021) a 160 skimmer and the inlet is exactly the same loose fit.
The stand pipe is glued together and can not be take apart to clean, it's one of the complaints I have with the skimmer. Also the stand pipe is meant to be turned to make large tuning adjustments then the dial knob on top is to fine tune the skimmer water level.
Hi. Great review! Thank you so much for such a detailed review of the skimmer. I am planning to start a 250gallon reef tank and contemplating between the Quantum 220 and the 300 model. If Budget is not a factor do you think a 220 or300 will work better for a 250 gallon tank? Also May I know where you get the swabbie?
+Chee Keong Ng the 220 would be the best choice for you. The swabbie comes from AvastMarine.com
melevsreef Thank you so much for the information.. appreciate it..
I love my nyos 120!
That skimmer cup though
Arrived early for the 360p release!
Nice video, I saw reviews that they are junk, the cup seized up on most! Good luck
+T Surro Nothing like that has happened with either of the two I have.
Omg been waiting forever for this thank you. skimmer looks great looks very easy to adjust. Wish I would have got one when I got my vertex but nyos were just too new and there was no info on them at the time. I have one question I saw on another channel a guy had the 220 model and had an issue with the skimmer cup fusing to the body and not being able to remove it. He had a real issue with getting a replacement and ended up getting another skimmer entirely. Was just wondering if you heard of this and if you has any issue?
+Arrick L I saw the video. Very strange, but glad it was resolved. Perhaps silicone grease on the gasket would be a good preventative?
pls, i want the link of the video
I need help, if I list my setup and parameters could you help me please 🙏
You still using/loving this skimmer?
I am still using it!
Great review! Recently installed a nyos 120 on a new cycling tank. I can open the air valve fully without the skimmer overflowing. Is this normal? Thanks!
Hey mark are these nyos skimmers completely quiet my current skimmer is very noisy
I Agree the Swabbie is awesome.
Glad to see someone else who's man enough to use his bare hands to clean the skimmer. No gloves or sponges for us!
I noticed a smaller version Nyos skimmer in the background, will that be installed on another tank. Also, when using the neck cleaner (swabbie?) how often do you have it cycle. I'll have to throw on the Star Wars soundtrack next time I'm cleaning and see how it goes. Lol
+Darren Thomas I'm using the Nyos 120 on my frag system. The very last minute of the video shows it in place and what the first day pulled out of my system. The swabbie needs to be repaired (the motor died recently), but once fixed it will run every three hours for 2 minutes per session. That equals 8x per day. #starwarsftw
I know this vid has been out for a while Mark, but some teflon tape wrapped around the Venturi tubes would have probably helped keep them in place.
Thanks. I ended up fixing it with something better. My concern was that teflon tape might wick its way into the intake of the pump.
Makes sense, glad it got sorted out. I do have a question...I'm considering upgrading to the Quantum 160 from the AquaC EV 240 I currently use (it's been great except for the 145 watts the mag 18 consumes and its hard to clean the internals), how is the smell from yours? The EV 240 has a lot of air flow out of the collection cup drain fitting and I have it plumbed to blow outside the house, otherwise my fish room stinks, not to mention a small but measurable increase in humidity in the room. Thanks in advance for your time, love the videos!
Can you make an episode of the real number crunching engineering (maybe CFD Simulations) of skimmer design? :D
hehehe
Marc, did they fix the grey pieces from falling out? I would suggest maybe a small rubber band or o-ring?
I applied a few drops of reef glue onto the gray pipes, let it dry, and gently sanded it down a bit. That seemed to add just enough friction to keep them in place. All the new ones are fine -- mine was a prototype so they weren't as snug as they needed to be.
Would it be possilbe for you to make a proper video on dialing in the quantum skimmer. I'v had mine for a year now, i love it, but i dont quite get as milky foam production, i'v been trying to play with the height (how deep the skimmer sits) and still the foam on the skimmer body seems more transparent. Only time i'v got the foam to be allmost completely white and milky was when i open the air valves completely, the skimmer sits in shallow water (8") and the water outlet is like 80% closed. But in that case i get tons and tons of small microbubbles in the sump, where some of them find a way to my DT. HELP me Marc!
And to add, i love the skimmer because it is quiet and pretty, easy to manage and clean, super slick looking, im just having trouble tuning it in. And the foam production is just bad, i don't get that thick foamhead unless i skimm extreamly wet tea like skimmate.
I have the air wide open on mine, and the water level is set so the bubbles are 'boiling' right at the base of the collection cup. That's my sweet spot. How often do you check on your skimmer daily? Is there a time of day when it is running nicely -- foam production is often affected by additives, foods, and barometric pressure.
I empty out the skimmer daily/every other day. i set my 'bubble line' to collection cup bottom level, that way i get quite even skimmate but its really really pale in colour and allmost no patrticles int he skimmate and if i drop it down to the part where the cup screws off, 80% of the stuff just sticks to the inside of the neck. Maby ill just have to get a squeekee, to clean the inside of the cup.
Hi Melev, sorry this is not related to your video, but I saw you wearing a sexy shrimp t-shirt in one of your other videos and was wondering if you're planning on shipping to the UK at any time in the future. I'd love one of those, but unfortunately I'm not in the US or Canada.
I can check what it would cost to ship to your area. Use Contact Us on my site and give me your full address, and I can get a quote.
Are you still running this on your tank? I’m considering this skimmer for a new tank I’m setting up.
Sure am. It's been running for several years now.
Hi Melev! Any chance you can put out a review on your NYOS 120?
Since they are essentially the same, how about I give you a written review here? Very quiet, easy to control, simple to disassemble and clean. The neck is very small, so I can't use an auto cleaner. I have a drinking glass brush to clean the inside of the body and the neck of the collection cup. It's on a 1.5" stand because it seems to work best around 7" deep.
Thanks Melev. I appreciate the small footprint as I have a small sump and would like more room than my Reef Octopus 110. Your videos are great, again thank you.
Sure thing. I'm working on a video about cyano now, and you'll see it featured then. :)
melevsreef is the nyos 120 sized properly for your 60 gallon frag tank? I am wanting to put it on my 50 gallon frag tank.
googIereallysucks I can say that my 120 started pulling very dark skimmate out immediately when I started it up. I have a 34 gallon, but I don't think he would have chose the 120 over the 160 if it couldn't keep up
Hi Marc, I have the Nyos Quantum 160 on my new reefer 425XL. its just about settled down now after nearly 2 weeks and is producing a nice foam. I took your advice and set it up with gate fully open and air screw fully open then tuned it in and waited.. great advice.Just one question, it seems to be producing lots of micro bubbles into the sump from the gate side / outlet of the skimmer, is this normal?
No, no bubbles should be coming out of the exit pipe. Either something isn't assembled correctly, or perhaps you have something in the water that is causing that. The only time I might expect that result would be if I had recently used Chemi-Clean to kill cyanobacteria. Be sure to check how it was put together first, and then pivot the skimmer's output so it isn't right next to the baffle going to the next zone. More travel time will allow any excess bubbles time to rise and pop, and not end up entering the return pump.
Hi Melevs
Huge fan, Merry Christmas. I need your Help please. I have exactly the same problem you have in the vídeo in the minute 21:50, when you say "i dont really know how i did this" My nyos is stucked too and i cannot regulate the water with the wheel anymore. I see that you somehow fixed it.... how?...
Mano thanks in advance
You can't unscrew it up or screw it down again? I just don't know how they actually made that part since I couldn't figure out how to take it completely apart myself. You do have a warranty if it is actually broken, so I'd be sure to contact Ecotech/Nyos for help sooner rather than later.
No I cannot unscrew it up or down, it si locked at the bottom, same as yours in your vídeo. I thought you figured it out how to fix it since later in your vídeo works again
Maybe a small snails is in there, blocking it from moving. Something is definitely preventing the move. You may need to contact NYOS.
Thank you for the great video, but the pumps seem too small for that skimmer. I hope you didn't get rid off your old skimmer. Keep it just in case of an emergency.
I'm still running the Nyos on my 400g reef, and am very happy with it. I do have my old skimmer in the backroom, but I may never need to use it again. :)
Your really good at acrylic. Make a double u shaped piece and epoxy that to each venturi. Then just drill a hole though the middle into the skimmer body.. Good to go.. :)
My feeling is that there should be no build up of crud in the neck of the skimmer, if so then this is a design issue. The neck should perhaps be narrower to force the bubbles into the waster ring... or you are not generating enough bubbles in the column so the protein doesnt make it over the top....
All skimmers build up crud in the neck over time. If you wait too long, it gets quite thick. I'm spoiled by my Skimmer Swabbie, which I've relied upon for many years. My smaller skimmer doesn't have one, so I clean that one more frequently. I've used about a dozen different skimmers over the years. Bubbles can only lift so much stuff. ;)
Are you still using this Skimmer? i am looking at it now and was curious if it is still kicking?
Dragon Slayer yup, love it. I post pics of it on Instagram, and it was featured in my Reef’s 6 year anniversary video.
Hey Marc, thinking of Nylos 120 as I'm running bubble magnus curve 7 but it's now humming noise alot. I've taken apart cleaned it. Ordered new pump and impeller if this doesn't fix it would you say get the nylos 120 as super quite. Tank is redsea e-260 69 gal with sump.
Great videos
I have a dream! I want to make a 500 gallon reef tank. In the mean time, could a skimmer this size (this on in particular) be used in 160 water system? I have a 125 tank and 75 gallon sump. TY sir
I think the Quantum 300 wouldn't run right on a 160g. The Model 220 is rated 135-530g, so that would probably be your best bet.
Did they fixed the venturi issue on the new smaller sized for your fragtank or it also has the issue?
All the other sizes are good to go. And I believe the Model 300 has long since been corrected as well. For mine that I still use now, I applied a few drops of super glue gel around the area that inserts into the pump, let the glue dry, then sanded it lightly. It stays perfectly in place, ever since. :)
Thanks for the quick reply. These skimmers are getting very popular among reefers.May change my Deltec SC 1455 to one of these in the future.
Where did you buy the automatic scrubber
The squeegee attachment? Avast Marine sells them.
do you twist the tube for large adjustment and the screw for fine....or just use the screw
+John Hilton I use the large adjustment knob as explained in the video.
OK thanks... Ps.. be great review
I just got the new Nyos 160 . It overflows a lot . How high should I put the water level to get a nice foam to skim in my sump?
That skimmer should be standing in 8" of water. If it is submerged more, place it on a skimmer stand. I set the water level (or the top of the bubbles) even with the bottom of the collection cup. Tiny adjustments one way or another to find the sweet spot, but keep in mind as the weather changes in your area, the skimmer will react to those barometric swings. You may have to adjust accordingly until the weather is stable... you'll get a feel for it.
melevsreef thanks for the info
You said that the barometer changes the height of the skimmer water level and functions?!
That something new to me. Is that why my skimmer overflow only at night?
I did lower the bubbles at the neck of the collection cup and its wrkin better!
Does this skimmer collection cup come off by turning clock-wise or counter clock-wise?Seems to be more than a littlg grumbling online youtube and some forums. Not to mention customer service from Nyos is no help and Ecotec?Has had to handle issues. What say you?You are an authorized dealer ,correct? BC
+Bret Crane I answered you on the other video already. Yes, I'm an authorized dealer.
What size sump you recommend for that size skimmer I got the same one.
A big one. This skimmer needs about 18" x 18" all by itself. Plus the drains, a return zone, reactors, if you want a refugium.... You'll probably be looking for a sump that can hold 100-150g of water. What size tank is it going under?
So I put it on my 180 gallon reef tank because my eshopp 300 broke so I got this one.
@@MyGetmoney1 You got the Nyos Quantum 300 for a 180g reef? That's beyond overkill.
melevsreef I know but when I get my 300 gallon that's where it's going.. lol
Hello, Do you know where can I find the replacement pumps for this Nyos
Quantum 300, which is the Quantum 5.0 ?
Try contacting Ecotech Marine if you are here in the U.S.
Is this still virtually silent ?
Absolutely. That's one of the biggest perks of this skimmer.
melevsreef have you ever herd the 220 ? I have one and absolutely love it , got it second hand and mine did hum quite a bit ,, didn’t know if this was normal for the 220 or it may need to replace the impeller and bearings or perhaps a new motor
Maybe wrap some plumbers tape around the tubes so they fit better.
I was concerned that the tape would unravel and get sucked into the pumps. The tubes haven't popped back out in a very long time, btw.
Can you run ozone on this skimmer? @melevsreef
That one I do not know. You'll have to contact Ecotech Marine to get that answer.
Hello Friend I am seeing if I buy a regal octopus or nyos, I would like to know if Does the nyos skimmer acrylic support ozone, to work together use (c200 sander)? grateful for the support. hugs from brazil
I'm not 100% sure, you'd better check the official brands' pages and see what their descriptions/directions state.
can u send me a link i would like to purchase one
What size tank do you have? How many gallons are you skimming?
cleaning to dramatic music...lmao...i love it
Hi do you have a review of the nyos 120 ?
I haven't done one yet, but I probably should. Maybe a written one since this video covers all the features that Nyos offers quite well .
melevsreef that would be great as I'm having a nightmare on the correct tuning with correct air and water level ratio
Open the air valve fully. And set the water level (where all the bubbles are making a head) right at the base of the collection cup.
melevsreef ok many thanks I will try that
melevsreef need a review on the 120 . that would be great thanks
Do you still have it today?
CUBAN REEFER Yes, just cleaned it tel days ago.
Im fine with my RE doublecone 200.
I didnt wanted to take any risk of noise in my bedroom.
Btw did you looked for red bloodworm eggs? And avoid buying JUMBO worms, this shit is just bad and if you thaw it , you will see what i mean..
My Copper is still just eating those and nothing else.
Greetings from germany
My copperband seems to like whatever he finds in the reef, but every night the frozen food hits the water with some other options. :) So far, so good.
you should sell the "melevsreef reef cleaning credit card"
I love it. ;)
use a rubber band around the base to hold those in
I resolved it with a few drops of glue to create enough friction to stay put.
What is perfect water level?
Every skimmer has a recommended depth. Check their recommendations.
@@melevsreef i know but i cant find
@@ukaszwawrzynowicz5327 I like 8" deep for the Nyos Quantum 300.
They really didn’t let you keep this?
They did. Still using it. :)
Why USA have bad warranties? It's 2 years minimum in Europe.
Got a 220, it is really noisy. :( cant enjoy watching tv with the skimmer running in the back... any1 else having problems?
Where is the sound emanating from specifically?
Warm water melts salt crystals like a hot knife threw butter
melv, mine is BIGGER than yours .. soo there
Nyos totally ripped off every feature deltec started putting on all their TC and SC line of skimmers 5+ years ago!
I've never looked at a Deltec that closely. I've seen them displayed at Macna year after year, but the price tag kinda made me shy away. They looked beautiful; I have no idea if they have the same features that Nyos has, or not.
Ive owned the old AP series and the new white TC and SC series. I finally settled on BK.
Deltec's are way overpriced IMO. You are better off sticking with nyos
meh. If i want a expensive skimmer, i just go all out with Royal Exclusive.
How much would that be?
