This song is actually really weirdly designed. The vocal lines aren't diatonic - meaning they don't click onto the chords in a conventional way. It's meant to sound slightly 'off' to your ear - not enough to repel you but enough to put you on edge, make you notice. Especially Kehlani, who seems to be singing to another song altogether, her major-key line floating on top of the minor-y, dark beat like oil on water. It's especially noticeable on "one day when I get back to the world". RnB is interesting because the sound bed is often so minimal that you're not absolutely sure what key you're in without the help of guitars or pianos, you just have a dim, low synth hum underneath the melody making you feel like you're floating in a deprivation tank, like your body is suspended between the beach and the sky forever. I love this shit.
