For everyone saying its genetics arnold Schwarzenegger explained his Calf workout perfectly, the calves carry your weight everyday, if you weigh 180 lbs then doing calf raises with weight under 100 pounds won't do much, you should be doing calf raises with weight close to your body weight, 180 lbs plus 180 extra pounds is 360 all together or 2x the persons body weight so that's the amount of weight someone who weighs 180 lbs should be holding wh8en doing Calf excercises, roughly 3×8. Heavy Weight, Low reps are optimal for building for mass.

BUT I’ve been training them 5-6 times at the end of each workout for 4 years, and doing what this guy does, plus a few other adjustments: - shin muscle development (flexing toes hard upward at the bottom of a calf raise) - heavy weight on bottom part of calf raise to put a load on the muscle when it’s stretched (tears it up good, especially seated raises) - 1 1/2 reps (going all the way up fast, hold 1 sec, back to bottom slow, hold 1 sec, then half way up for 1 sec fast, pressing big toes down hard) OR half way up first, 1 sec, down slow, 1 sec, all the way up fast, 1 sec, down slow, 1 sec - Single leg calf raises are crucial - High reps high reps high reps! I mean sure, you can strengthen and develop them to some degree but look at pro football and basketball players. They are constantly doing motions that are great for the lower legs and yet some of them have bell pepper calves and some have twigs and it's not an indicator of speed, quickness, explosiveness or much of anything.

@@roberthdg fr people use every excuse in the book and when they run out , they buy another book to pull excuses from instead of actually putting in the work.
I've been Team No Calves for many years now. I'm 26 and my calves have been 15 inches in circumference for what feels like forever. What I have found to work the best for me is to train calves more frequently. While you may only deadlift, squat, or bench maybe once or twice per week. Calves have a "faster" recovery time; and you may be able to train them again every other day. You practically "work out" your calves every time when you walk. So any sort of workout you give them, they are ready for them. So you need to work these muscles more frequently. You may find that your calves are NOT sore the next day, but that's okay. Try going down the stairs and you may feel little soreness if that's comforting. But either way, lack of sore calves is not to worry. That may mean you have recovered, and you need to hit them again. After all, a muscle that holds most of your body weight everyday, is a muscle that can handle most of what you throw at it. Therefore you need to amp up your frequency and slowly bring up the weight. DON'T bounce the weight, pause at the bottom so that ONLY your calf muscle IS lifting the weigh up and NOT your tendons and ligaments. While I can't recommend you each a program, I've been doing 5 sets of 10-12 reps on Donkey calf and Seated Calf Raises individually. I've went from having 15 inch calves to 17 inch calves in less than 6 months while doing this. I used to think I could only workout calves maybe only once a week because every other muscle took that time to recover. For calves, those things are ready for what you have to bring in next. Before you know it, you may have calves bigger than your upper body. And maybe people would be saying, hey, he skips upper body day instead of leg day.
One of the smartest comments on this I've ever encountered! I used to study with choreographers who basically dance every day. So 95% of them got pretty decent calves. And the rest 5% probably skipped classes. Calves definitely got the capacity to handle frequent workouts. In fact just as you said, it's the main prerequisite to their growth.
They either kick in eventually or not at all. I had appallingly small calves when I was a teenager but I turned a metabolic corner when I hit 25 and now they're pretty big and respond much better to training. It was about the same time my flat teenager ass vanished.
Thanks ! A lot of functional gain since I paid attention to my calves. Thanks for pointing out the need to change angles. Just ignore those silly comments and keep sharing👍👍👍
Preston was probably born with huge calves, like my buddy who don't even workout. Doing 100 sets 5 x a week won't add 2 inches to your calves.. maybe if you gained 70lbs
Calves have to be worked at high volume, as they are used a lot in daily activities. I started training mine every other day, and I can tell a difference.
I read in Arnolds encyclopedia of bodybuilding to train calves everyday, unless they are sore. train em heavy. 4-8 reps. you walk everyday which uses your calves it doesn't make sense to train them light. try the heavy method it hasn't failed anyone I've recommend it to yet
Patriot1790 what works for you works for you but Arnold explains his calves theory. I weigh 180, multiply that by 2 sins I walk on two calves obviously. That's 360lbs my calves are use to. Go on the smith machine (only good use for that thing anyways lol) I throw on 4 plates each side and do 4 to 6 reps while holding my calves in the up position to get an extra contraction. It sounds silly but this method has got me from twig calves to random people asking for advice. I do mix in volume but the only thing that ever got me was definition. Can't define your muscle if there isn't any muscle I think that's what many struggle on
Insane genetics!! My uncle has some insane genetics too. His calves are out of this world and he doesnt even train them excpect back when he was a soldier which was over 25 years ago.....
exactly they are mostly people who use excuses. "he's juicing. genetics" everyone crying genetics on this video train calves completely wrong & to top it off end up giving up before any sort of progress is made whatsoever
But thats not true.. Ive been training my calves for about 4 years seriously, high intensety, with full range of motion, and a proper stretch at top and bottom. took me probably about 2 years to even notice a slight change. I kept trying to confuse my calves by mixing up the routine, yet still making sure to do the seated calf raises and the standing calf raises, but adding some bodyweightmovement-exercises and tip toeing with weight, and also some explosive movements.. in other words, i felt like i did ALL the necessary exercises needed, but i still feel like a have a looong way to go compared to my other bodyparts.. i even trained them 3 times a week, without skipping a single day. in total a see a slight improvement, but im definitly convinced that 80% is genetics and 20 % hard work. Cus if they dont grow much in 4 years they wont grow much in 8 either unless you dont work your upper body then maybe you will balance it by shrimping the upper part. Good luck to all with small calves, and god bless pants! :)
L u k e B l u n d e l l If you can grow your upper body or quads, then there's no reason why you can't grow your calves. It's not as if genetics hate calves but loves biceps or something.
My chest, shoulders, core, and thighs grow well with training but biceps, forearms, and calves don’t. It’s like the extremities that people see but don’t grow easily for me. ALSO I don’t train forearms and calves enough but I should.
1234kingconan there’s your answer. You probably know this but the calf’s and forearms are very stubborn. I bet you if you put them first in your workouts and bumped up the frequency and volume you would see them grow like your chest & quads.
you have to be gifted with strong developed calves like with forearms too. This guy in the video is blessed with strong calves to begin with. I have had a hard time to develope my skinny calves, they look ok now after many years of training, but i wont get the ones he has. Very much the opposite response as with my thighs. I just have to squat a few sets 2 times a week and they became very muscular over the years. Just like others mentioned, there are people that have big muscular calves naturaly, and i can't get no matter what i do. Anyhow, never skip a legday!
i have been doing this workout for 2 weeks and it has put some size on my calves. u really have to dedicate working ur calves. its alot of work but it is paying off
Massive Calves are usually inhereted. My Brother and me got ours from our dad . We naturally all walk on our toes (we lift our heels high on each step ) Friends who have change /relearn their gait and one (after 20 years of traning his calves tri weekly to no avail) now less than 2 years later he has huge calves. I must add he permanently changed footwear to a higher heel to toe ratio air max style shoe and he also allowed himself to put on an extra 15 to 20 lbs , which he now has lost in last 6 months So i think it was a combination of making those changes and continuing to do his 3 leg workouts a week
I'd say genetics are playing a huge role here. I think it's fair to assume he's training the rest of his body at least as hard, if not harder than his calves and yet his calves are way more developed than the rest of him.
He has great calves but I wanna see what they looked like before. I'm under the impression this muscle is the most resistant to mass increase at this point!!!
These are insane! Unlike me, naturally I got a lot of strenght in my legs, but my calves are just way too small, Ive been working them out pretty crazy for the last 6-8 months and they finally started growing, seated calf raise 5x45s for 15-20 reps and I got nothing on my legs, and there are guys in my gym with huge calves barely moving 3x45s on the seated calf raise. Thanks genetics!
+Dejan Lazarevic yup! I used to be a ballet dancer, and my calves never got big. Now I've been trainer for a while to become a bodybuilder and my calves are still small, so yes, this guy has great calves' genetics! Lol
+Ruben I didn't assume that was only calves. Obviously, genetics dictate everything in our bodies. But this video is only about calves, so we are just talking about a specific part of the body, that's all. Hence, the title n content of the video.

He’s form is very good, that’s one of the keys to building bigger calf muscles!
I swear I've already saw this video somewhere
where?
HD Re upload
your mom has big calves. maybe that's where you seen it. bro.
This is fucking awesome.
Just ignore those silly comments and keep sharing👍👍👍
that's some nice equipment.... my gym's seated calf's equipment is BS... damn man...
Loving this workout. Great to come across this channel
Preston was probably born with huge calves, like my buddy who don't even workout. Doing 100 sets 5 x a week won't add 2 inches to your calves.. maybe if you gained 70lbs
genetics is a hell of a thing
Calves have to be worked at high volume, as they are used a lot in daily activities. I started training mine every other day, and I can tell a difference.
I read in Arnolds encyclopedia of bodybuilding to train calves everyday, unless they are sore. train em heavy. 4-8 reps. you walk everyday which uses your calves it doesn't make sense to train them light. try the heavy method it hasn't failed anyone I've recommend it to yet
I do heavy weight and high reps.
Looks like Joseph Gordon Levitt
Eddie Medrano yes 😂
training calves 2-3x a week really helped my calf growth instead of only training them once a week. same with my neck trainingg
@christianguzman
Lol exactly what I was thinking
This video is very informative and beneficial for my goal of obtaining muscular legs!
Why do people say it's genetics? They obviously don't train them hard enough or not as often as they should!?
Genetics have a big role though. Look at how low his Calf Muscles attach to his ankle. Same goes for forearms too.
+MrXelium Yh fair point. You still could get big calves tho. Could you? Would just be harder to get
finally someone who makes sense
exactly they are mostly people who use excuses.
Preston what did your calves look like before you starting working out? I'd bet they were good (huge) naturally. Thanks for the instruction.
Even though my genetics prevent me from having big calves, I still try lol. My upper body and quads are huge compared to my calves
L u k e B l u n d e l l If you can grow your upper body or quads, then there's no reason why you can't grow your calves. It's not as if genetics hate calves but loves biceps or something.
@@adhiraj9781 yes it is exactly like that lmao genetics love biceps and chest but they hate calves
These calves are bigger than my future
Funny comment.
i have been doing this workout for 2 weeks and it has put some size on my calves. u really have to dedicate working ur calves. its alot of work but it is paying off
7:11 checkn' to see whos mirin da hefers
Massive Calves are usually inhereted. My Brother and me got ours from our dad . We naturally all walk on our toes (we lift our heels high on each step ) Friends who have change /relearn their gait and one (after 20 years of traning his calves tri weekly to no avail) now less than 2 years later he has huge calves. I must add he permanently changed footwear to a higher heel to toe ratio air max style shoe and he also allowed himself to put on an extra 15 to 20 lbs , which he now has lost in last 6 months
So i think it was a combination of making those changes and continuing to do his 3 leg workouts a week
I'd say genetics are playing a huge role here. I think it's fair to assume he's training the rest of his body at least as hard, if not harder than his calves and yet his calves are way more developed than the rest of him.
wrong, he probably just walks in a way that relies solely on putting most of his weight on his toes. Genetics determine insertions period.
The video I was looking for!
He has great calves but I wanna see what they looked like before. I'm under the impression this muscle is the most resistant to mass increase at this point!!!
Starting gym on 7th September 2019.
Will be doing these for leg day 100%
I thank God for my awesome calve genetics
John Doe I hate you :'(
Thank your parents
John Doe but you’re still ugly lmao
Mr Unknown
brutal
I train calf’s 3 to 4 times a week and legs twice a week. I tried this switching feet position on each machine and bloody hell. This is the future
he looks like popaye but then with big calves
Was a great job man well done ✅
This dude looks like he's in the 90's
These are insane! Unlike me, naturally I got a lot of strenght in my legs, but my calves are just way too small, Ive been working them out pretty crazy for the last 6-8 months and they finally started growing, seated calf raise 5x45s for 15-20 reps and I got nothing on my legs, and there are guys in my gym with huge calves barely moving 3x45s on the seated calf raise. Thanks genetics!
Is called "genetics" lol
jup
+Dejan Lazarevic yup! I used to be a ballet dancer, and my calves never got big. Now I've been trainer for a while to become a bodybuilder and my calves are still small, so yes, this guy has great calves' genetics! Lol
Ana Lozada the same with me, im working out since over 6 years now and almost every muscle is well developed, but i just cant bring out my claves!
+Ruben I didn't assume that was only calves. Obviously, genetics dictate everything in our bodies. But this video is only about calves, so we are just talking about a specific part of the body, that's all. Hence, the title n content of the video.
+Dejan Lazarevic we have the calves' curse! Lol 🙈😩😭
He was born with great calves +proper workout sessions
GENETICS
Most useful. Thanks for the tips
I see bodybuilding.com is recycling old videos
I'm glad cause I haven't seen this
My calves hurt just watching this workout! Great video
