I did the same procedure on my son's vw convertible. Used duct tape instead of suction clamps. The 3m glue can be quite messy be sure to not get it on the canvas as it will be impossible to get out later. I also applied to much on my first bead and tried to "clean it off of the glass. The rest I did a smaller bead and it went much better. You can use a razor to clean it off of the glass, just be careful to not cut your canvas. We did this 2 years ago and the window seal is still holding up great. FYI: The dealerships wanted $4k to replace the whole soft-top with labor. (Soft-top replacement on line is only $900... $25 for a tube of glue is a bargain what do you have to lose?)
So after watching this video, thank you by the way, I have started my Mini Cooper R57 window re-glue. I also used the primer (3m Single Step Primer and the 3m Window Weld 08609) to reseal the canvass on the inside first. After applying the primer, i waited an hour to let it set, then re-glued the interior seam, i used wooden clothes pins to hold the canvass fabric together. I then moved the top down slightly, to get a little extra pull on the top, i started on the driver’s side and stretched the canvass on to the glass, set my suction cup holders, and applied a medium bead of the glue and tightened clamps accordingly. I then let this set an hour and a half with a couple of pillows pushing on the glass from the inside, and repeated this process all the way around the window. I will update with my results.
Jeremy Hurst Actually it turned fantastic! I sold the car and I know the new owner and there’s still no signs of any leaks or drips so I would say it’s worth a shot.

Just finished doing this to my '09 Mini. Thanks so much for the video. The only suggestion I have for others doing this is to make sure you either, a) remove the inside pillows after clamping but before gluing, or b) if leaving the pillows in place, do not move them until after the glue has cured. Otherwise you run the risk of smearing the stuff on the inside of the glass (like I did), which is hard to get at. I was anticipating a tedious, hot job trying to scrape the stuff off without damaging the window defroster wires. Started on doing just that, using the damp paper towel I had used to clean the outside of the glass to wipe off the dust where I had scraped and found, much to my delight, that if I scrubbed hard enough it came off! Apparently, it doesn't stick as well to the clear plastic covering the defroster on the inside of the window. Got lucky, but in retrospect, it was a problem easily avoided.
Yeah, painter's tape right at the glue boundary line with 3x5 index cards or newspaper on the other side of the tape to give yourself *lots* of room to work with. The problem with tape and newsprint or cards is that he's using those suction cup clamps, which can make the tape hard to pull up.

thank you for the video. definitely helpful. just finished rear window glass reglue on neighbor's pontiac solstice convertible. a couple of suggestions with the sealy clamps. spin them around compared to orientation shown in video so that the wider spoon-like side is placed on the fabric of convertible. also recommend placing wood strips cut to appropriate length to span distance between sealy clamps to distribute the applied force over a longer distance. a standard paint stir-stick cut to length works well. pleased to report a successful outcome and major cost savings. neighbor reported getting repair quotes from local body shops starting at $1500 to upwards of $3000+ with no guarantee of success. many shops turned down the repair altogether. cost as a DIY repair: clamps (6): $40, primer: $32, windo-weld glue: $30, total $103. labor time: a couple of hours start to finish. definitely worth a shot as DIY project.

To anyone in California, we can't get the primer here. It's illegal to be shipped to California. I tried buying it from several sites and it wasn't until I went to my local O'Reilly's they told me it was unavailable in California. I simply had it shipped to my friend in Oregon and had him ship it to me. Going to be trying this very soon on my 99 Miata.

better to use painters tape around the perimeter before you start to prime or glue it down, I would think?
Definitely! I have a tan top and it would have been a mess if I hadn't masked it off with painters tape and plastic shething.

That 3m primer is snome nasty shit. I use it for everything. Even makes 3m tape 10 times stronger.
