Joseph Mohr wrote his 6-verse poem in Mariapfarr, Austia in 1816 and Franz Xaver Gruber composed the music in Arnsdorf, Austria in 1818. It was first sung at Christmas Mass in St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf, Austria with Fr. Mohr playing his guitar. The English translation of three verses is by John Freeman Young, who became Episcopal Bishop of Florida.
