I just want to say thank you 🙏🏻 - I’m brand new into being a PT and your tips have helped me so much!! You live in the same state as me too haha. Keep making these videos, I appreciate them!
@sortahealthy In a way, this is pretty motivating not just for the potential clients and their goals, but for the trainers to gather information as well as learning people skills while having a casual conversation. It's a win-win team effort, that benefits both parties. Appreciate it as I am also a Certified Personal Trainer, so thanks again!!!
6:54 I just rated all of these for myself as if I were the client... And I rated them from bottom up 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Postural Improvement is most important to me because I think of it as the foundation; if it's screwed up, so is everything else. Mobility is next because I'm stiff, crunchy, and tight all over the place and if I can't move - it doesn't matter how ripped or strong I am. Muscle Gain is third because I won't get it optimally unless I have the first two taken care of, but also third because more lean muscle means more Strength (my number four) and (five) a higher metabolism to 'burn' more (fat) Weight. Am I a nerd? Or just think I'm a nerd but really don't know wtf I'm talking about? But if I would have rated them correctly, I think I'd say they all rate a "1" because all of them are really important to me. Also, question: at 8:15 - is your phasing system from bottom up? Stability first and phasing up to Total Body Lean the 49th week?
As a newly certified PT this is exactly the type of thing I'm looking for to help me feel confident with training actual clients. Honestly explained, simply straightforward, methods that a previously successful trainer developed and uses. This is potentially one of those dumb questions, but It would really help me understand what to do; can you give a few examples of what you mean by 'professionalism' in this context? Is it something like being proper in speech or explaining thoroughly or having the right information or looking 'professional' or something else or all of the above? What do you imagine when you say you're professional? Thank you!!
Glad you found it helpful! As far as professionalism, pretty much all of the things you mentioned. You want to look and act professional in your speech, mannerisms, and attitude towards a potential client.
Do you do the free workout the same day as the consultation? Why do you feel someone on the fence should try a session if you already gave them a free one? When you charge for a single session, does that session cost more then a single session in your package? All these questions are here because I respect your content! I rarely comment but I want to know! I've been watching your channel quite a bit! Thank you for everything!
Thanks for the kind words! I’m glad you’re finding everything helpful! We do offer a free workout on the first day/consultation. About 2/3s of people do it and the other third usually just wants to sign up and get into the actual program. I’m not sure I follow your next question. A free sample workout is just part of the consultation. There are no other free workouts. Yes, a single session should definitely cost a lot more than a session in a package. If you want to learn more about that check out this pricing video: ruclips.net/video/O5c4bXzbnn0/видео.html
@@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation The follow up was more of a question in regards to when the free workout is done. Thanks for clarifying and responding to my comment! It means a lot!
Im not sure I’ll ever do a full video on Vagaro but I do very much like the software! We still use it today! I talk about it a fair amount in this video. ruclips.net/video/oYhThKuqeXQ/видео.html
As always you are a wealth of great information! I appreciate it very much! I like your suggestion of mini-workout session offer for first consult. What type of programs do you assemble for mini-workouts if you don't yet know the physical ability of the client? Is there any particular workout that you recommend, or are there some exercises that are better than others?
I have a planned workout I use for consults that I adjust as needed to the individual. It’s very simple, basic exercises that give me an idea of how they move and also are somewhat simple to get right form wise. For example, rows either on a cable machine or single arm, bar push-ups, a lateral band walk, squats, etc. Exercises that can be progressed or regressed as needed.
Thank you so, so much! I just got hired as a PT at a commercial gym (starting once gyms open again) and I am super nervous but excited. I am seeking out as much info as I can so I can really help people reach their goals. I am just wondering, how do you go about discussing nutrition? I am an exercise science major at the moment and have taken a few nutrition classes, but I thought you are not supposed to give diet advice as a trainer since you're not a dietitian? Any advice would be super helpful! Thanks again for the video :)
Thanks for the feedback! What kind of advice you can legally give to people on nutrition totally depends on where you live. If you’re in the USA look at 6:05 in the video. That should give you an idea of what you can legally do. If you’re not in the USA you’ll probably have to do a little more research on what you can do.
You cannot give nutrition advice if you live in the US. You have to refer them to a nutritionist or dietician. You can ask them what their diet is you can make suggestions but not right up nutrition plans.
Hi, within the consultation do you do complete the PAR Q, Health History Questionare, The Informed Consent Form and speak about the princings you require for your services etc ?
Hey Jeff, Thankyou for the helpful video. The other vids I checked were also very valuable :). So...I am currently working as a freelance personal trainer in my local gym. I am thus responsible to find my clients. My current strategy is to introduce myself to members, talk to them about things like their fitness goals and then I offer a free session to get some advice about exercises, nutrition for their goals. I currently send them a list of questions to answer and then we plan the session and after the session we talk about how the session went and if they would be interested to take PT. What I want to know, is this a good strategy or would you do it differently? I really struggle with my sequence of events right now. Things like: Should I ask these people after the first encounter if they want to have a free session? Should I send a question form to them before this session? In your consultation, you ask if people have barriers and when they answer that question, you'll give them information how you'll help them overcome these barriers. Can I ask this question? The people I approach in this way are not necessarily looking to buy PT, because I approached them and they did not come to me... I hope that you see my thought process here, haha.. Could you maybe draw a 'timeline' for me? Like: first you talk to people, then you ask them if they want a session, then do the session etc. I hope you understand my question ;')...Thanks in advance!
I would personally rework this a little bit. So, the first step should be a face to face consultation. During that time, you’d go over all of the things I’m guessing you do in your question form-goals, history, barriers to success, etc. This should be a conversation where you both connect with the client, make it known you understand their goals and show them the value you may provide them. At this time, you’d also go through a detailed health history and required paperwork for training. At the same time as the consultation, or another time, you could offer them a sample session. You don’t have to do this but it’s certainly helpful. I usually do this as a shortened session just to give them a taste of what a session might look like. I very much explain that this is just a sample, their programming would be more specific to them should they sign up. At the end of the consultation/workout, you could then ask if they have any questions and if they’d be interested in coming back in and seeing packages/pricing. By this time, you should have a pretty good idea of whether or not someone is interested in signing up. Explain pricing if necessary and let them tell you what they want to do.
@@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation thankyou very much! Besides, I was wondering what I should 'promise' the person what they get when I approach them? I am talking about the free session I offer. Because right now, I am not yet in the position that people come to me and be like 'hey I want you to be my PT'. Right now, I have to get out there (in my gym) and talk to people.
Sir, I appreciate your content. I am at this for 30+ years and you have given me much food for thought. Is there a software that you would suggest that you can do any evaluation on a. Store it for you B. Send it to the client so that they can print it, and Tay accountable by tra king their workouts and meals onit?
That’s awesome! It sounds like you’ve done very well! I don’t really use any software for this assessment. I just print it off and give it to my client in person. You can access our consultation forms here: www.sortahealthytrainered.com/businessforms
Thanks! I discuss our phasing in depth in this video: ruclips.net/video/St02YIS7_Tk/видео.html The phasing chart we use is also available for download at: www.sortahealthylifestyle.com/freepersonaltrainingforms
Hello Jeff and thank you for the detailed explanation. I’m a new trainer as of Oct 2021 and I'm so nervous LOL. Your channel was recommended to me. I wanted to know if you charge your potential clients for the consultation? Is it a good idea to have clients pay via credit/debit card only, or is cash a good option? I also love the idea of having them try a short workout routine, very clever.
Thanks for the kind words and support! Consultations are always free with me. I allow cash, card, and check. If clients want to pay in cash or check, they just have to pay for the package in full. If they’d rather pay as they go, I keep a card on file.
Hey there, I just saw your comment and wanted to give you some advice if you don't mind. If you can charge by card I recommend it (especially if you are doing online training). Also, seeing how you just got into the fitness profession last year, try to focus on solving a specific problem for a specific type of person. This will allow you to produce better results and increase your value. Hope this helps and any questions, ask away.
@@alexcatalfamo5464 Oh absolutely i doing mind any advice. Can you elaborate more on solving a specific problem for specific type of person? And how would I factor in nutritional advice? I’m currently working on my nutrition certificate. Thanks again!
@@ebonyhalfacre_fitness4262 Yes of course. Think about this, if I were to ask you, "what problem are you solving?" what would your answer be? Would you even have an answer? See, you don't want to sell "personal training," you want to sell a transformation or a solution to a problem. Does that make sense? If not let me know, maybe I can jump on a call with you and see if I can offer more clear advice for you.
Hi I have a question. Do you do the consultation first and then if they decide they want you as their personal trainer you do the assessment at another time or do you do the consultation and assessment all at one time? If that makes sense.
Yup the consultation is the initial meeting where we go over goals, do health history stuff and then do a shortened sample workout. I do their assessment in their next appointment assuming that they sign up for a package.
Hi !! Love all the information and well presented . 1) I go to client's homes , I did with affluent market . I do phone consultation before doing an assesment . Would you charge on the initial consultation ? 2) If you had them try a session would you charge in this market , thanks . If so how much ?
My consultation is always free. Even when I trained people in their homes I would still offer the consultation for free. Tbh it’s probably one of those things that would work either way, free or charged depending on how you frame it though. They would be charged for their next session for sure though. I would charge anywhere between $1.00 to $1.50 per minute for training in an affluent area. In really affluent areas you may even charge a bit more. I would also charge a little extra on top of that for a travel fee. Hope that helps! Thanks for the support!
@@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation Thank you so much !! I charge 1500.00 3x week . I'm been involved in training 20 years . Who can i reach for affluent client , business model , social media ?
That would make sense for an affluent area where you’re traveling to the client. You’d be right around that $1.50 a minute plus travel fee. That’s assuming they’re averaging 12-13 sessions a month and you’re charging $1500 a month.
As far as marketing help with affluent clients goes, you definitely need to present yourself as high end and qualified. I would certainly make it known that you have all those years of experience. A professional website goes a long way too.
@@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation awesome ! I'll keep following you , who would you suggest in the higher market , On line training ? I do many of the Eastern fitness , very unique and very good media ,PR ?
How long are your consultations? Including time to fill out paperwork seems like it would be long, but most trainers I've heard have said 15-20 minutes
The informed consent it basically just a waiver that says if you get hurt training with me, I’m not liable, unless I do something really stupid. The Health History Questionnaire and PARQ are both required waivers too but they’re more strait to the point and just checking boxes. Again, in the USA all three forms are necessary.
Hey I have a question say for example you meet a client while they working out and you offer them a free workout should I do a consultation and all the steps after I do the free workout.
Ya in that case I would still take them through the sit down portion of the consultation separately. I wouldn’t do a workout with a potential client without first having them fill out the PAR Q, Health history questionnaire, and informed consent though. If you do a workout with them and somehow, they get injured or anything else, without those forms being filled out first you’re liable for damages. So make sure that you protect yourself.
@@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation thanks so much I’m getting certified with nasm will continue to watch more videos if I have any questions I will reach out thanks.
Hi Jeff, extremely helpful videos! Just want to ask when we write programs for clients. Do we send the clients the program that we have designed for them or do we just go through it with them without showing them? I know PT's that do send it and some that don't. I just started personal training and I am unsure. Hope to see your view on this :)
Thank you! I don’t typically send in person clients programs unless they ask for them. If they ask, I’ll create them something small but that’s usually it.
I have a questions. If I'm training a couple, they both want to loose weight and want to workout together. Should I keep the exercises so that it applies to both or should I program for both of them separately? can you give ANY advice on training a couple.
You kind of have to find a balance between the two things. If they both have the same goal and similar physical capabilities then this is easy. If they don’t then it can be pretty hard. I’ll be releasing a video on this soon!
Hi there, I'm studying online for my PT exam (as I have no other financial option) and I am still confused about some things, for example: at which point do you talk about the nutrition part, motivation - do you do that at the screening or after the fitness tests when you do the goal setting (it makes more sense at the goals because we were taught the screening is about clearing them for exercise, but since they also a the general an lifestyle questionnaire there it confuses me a bit.) Also, how does the single-leg squat assessment compare to the OHS and when do you do the push/Pull assessment and single-leg squat? (I was taught you always do the OHS unless the client can't). What exactly does the V02 max number mean to you as a trainer a how does it influence how the person will be trained. Lastly, when you o screening you o the PARQ, General, Lifestyle and Medical Questions, but I am unsure what to do with the info - PARQ as far as I can tell identifies major signs and symptoms an you send them for clearance an the medical form can tell of further signs or symptoms, but what about the risk screening (HR, BP, BMI, WHR), your not gonna send the client for clearance for smoking or having a sedentary life (Do you just send them for the bigger risks eg high BP or HR - I mean what does it mean for me as a trainer if they have for example 3 risk factors?). Thank you for the videos so far. I find them very helpful in terms of the practical flow of things an the way to talk to clients.
Hopefully your studying is going well! I'm sure it is! -I talk about nutrition through the entire consultation. I talk about it most during short and long term goal setting and of course the full nutrition section of the consultation, which is about 2/3s of the way through the sit down portion of the process. -We talk goal setting and motivation through the entire consultation process. More of it specifically happens before the physical portion of the consultation, but goals should be talked about the entire time because they're seeing you and potentially paying you to help them achieve a goal. -I'm not sure I understand your question about the single leg squat and OHS. I have all of my clients, who can do an overhead squat, do it. I also have my clients due multiple different single leg movement screens as those are part of the functional movement screen that I use. These tests are done in the assessment after the consultation. There are multiple right ways to do all of this though. - VO2 max or maximal oxygen uptake will mean almost nothing to you as a trainer, unless you work in a laboratory. You wont have any accurate ways to test your clients VO2 max nor will they care about VO2 max. -In the United States you have to have your client fill out the PAR Q, Healthy History Questionnaire and the informed consent. If they say yes to anything on the PAR Q, you have to send them to a medical professional before doing a training program. As far the health history goes, if they present any heart, lung, or other dangerous potential symptoms/problems, they should consult with a doctor before beginning a training program. Good Questions! Let me know if you have any more! I'm glad that you're finding them helpful!
@@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation Thank you! For me ot seemed like the single leg squat is like a more zoning down of the muscles and would be better than OHS but I understand now you do both. My main fear for the exam is that I might forget something, leave something out and fail. Thank you for all the help and info. Im gonna use your videos as refreshers and info in the future
What if clients/patients are naturally rude and in a bad mood? Can you refuse service to them? They should leave their emotions at the door because PT's arnt qualified psycologists. But of course I would want to cheer them up. Im an introverted PT
Ya you can turn anyone down if you don’t want to work with them. I’ve personally never done it but it’s always an option. In pretty much any job you’re going to have clients who are easy to work with and ones who aren’t. Training is certainly no different.
We charge the same way for virtual personal training or one-on-one personal training via webcam. We charge differently for online coaching and we are actually releasing a video on pricing for online coaching today!

So glad I found you! Thank you for great information
You’re welcome! Glad you’re finding it useful!

You´re AWESOME, thanks for sharing.

What are people's opinions on adding cardiovascular improvement to the 5 categories that are listed for ranking of importance?
Do you have the consulation form on your website as I cannot seem to find it,. Thank you so much, these videos are really preparing me for my new job.
You can find them here under consultation forms: www.sortahealthytrainered.com/businessforms

@@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation Okay thank you! I live in the US
@@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation so is the regulation dependent on where the trainer lives or the trainee?
You cannot give nutrition advice if you live in the US. You have to refer them to a nutritionist or dietician. You can ask them what their diet is you can make suggestions but not right up nutrition plans.
Hi, within the consultation do you do complete the PAR Q, Health History Questionare, The Informed Consent Form and speak about the princings you require for your services etc ?
I talk about the PAR Q, HHQ and informed consent at 7:08. I talk about pricing towards the end of the video.

Hey Jeff,
Thankyou for the helpful video.
Things like:
Should I ask these people after the first encounter if they want to have a free session?
Sir,
I appreciate your content.

@@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation You’re welcome and thank you. So if clients pay as they go, you charge their card that’s on file?
This was excelent!
Thank you!
Awesome 👍
Glad that you found it helpful!
We need trying together
How long are your consultations? Including time to fill out paperwork seems like it would be long, but most trainers I've heard have said 15-20 minutes
Our consultations are about 75 minutes on average.
Thanks again Jeff. One question I have is regarding the informed consent. Does that include the waiver, or is the waiver another form to be filled?
The informed consent it basically just a waiver that says if you get hurt training with me, I’m not liable, unless I do something really stupid. The Health History Questionnaire and PARQ are both required waivers too but they’re more strait to the point and just checking boxes.
Again, in the USA all three forms are necessary.
@@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation thanks. With virtual/online training, would I need to modify the informed consent?
Of course! If you have any questions let me know!
@@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation Thanks so much for your reply! Keep doing what you're doing Jeff! I'm so glad I found your channel
For the consultation is the waiver needed as well? What about if you plan to train clients outside are there any other additional waivers to sign?
A waiver is needed before they workout so if you workout in their consultation, then yes. There are no additional waivers for outside training.
This is a blessing bro lol
Glad you found it helpful!
It’s a lot to remember but I’m sure you’ll do well. What exam are you taking?

Ya you can turn anyone down if you don’t want to work with them. I’ve personally never done it but it’s always an option. In pretty much any job you’re going to have clients who are easy to work with and ones who aren’t. Training is certainly no different.
