@@thatpickleballguy I used to do these sky lobs in tennis and I would just slice all under the ball with the strings to send the ball really
high up into the sky. about 100+ feet high but I take the finger off the grip when doing this lob and I don't look up into the sky either
I just get under the ball and send it all up into the sky keeping my head still when I hit the ball all up..... That stops my head from moving
all around when hitting the ball all upward. So that works in the tennis. However that version of it I do on the tennis court don't work too
well with the Pickelball and usually puts too much spin on the ball if I do that slice lob. So I've looked at this sky lob video, and can see the lob is being done with a compact buggy whip finish to hook the ball with. We do use the reverse finish often to hook the ball with in the tennis to
keep the ball inside of the court. But I can see the buggy whip is done little bit different in the pickelball with the finish..
There's is alot of little adjustments to have to make to transition the swings from tennis swings into pickelball swings.
I don't know yet if my Forehand Slice Dip Drive that I do as a Serve Return in the tennis and for doing the approach shots
will work also in the Pickleball. if I can transition that weapon successfully over into pickelball or not.
So I have some questions, wondering what weapons I can successfully transition over from the tennis to the pickelball.

Preaching to the choir. I feel like if my opponent hits a hard deep return on serve my odds are really poor of getting a good 3rd shot drop or even an effective 3rd shot drive. I like trying to sky the lob in that situation and if possible get it deep. I don't fear any overhand smash if it is done from mid court or beyond and sun, wind or lights along with the disorientation you talked about work in your favor to get back to the net. One thing I have found though, is that if you do hit the perfect lob sending them back near the baseline (especially if they let it bounce) you and your partner should get to the net rather than admiring the perfect lob shot. Happens more than you would think.

Finally! A pro validates my topspin sky lobs which I use often to set my partner and me to attack the opponents’ weak response. As a 4.5 tennis player fairly new to pickleball, I don’t understand why so many 50+ 4.0 picklers look down on the lob as a legitimate shot. It’s like when I was a total newbie and used to only drive the ball, the 3.5 players whom I beat would say “That’s not real pickleball.” So now I’m a strong 4.0-4.5 player and use lobs often for defense and offense and other
More experienced players I’ve caught up to complain that it’s
a cop out to lob. Any athlete should be ready to execute and respond to all types of shots and tactics!

Anyone who calls something "not real pickleball" often times is telling you that they are struggling to deal with or return that particular shot. Had someone who couldn't return drives or even flicks say they're "not how the game is supposed to be played" but it's a part of it, you either keep complaining or you adapt. I will never get upset at an opponent who bests me over and over with a good shot because that's on me to adjust.

  • @keepitsimple64

The trouble I often see with most players is that when the back player receives a tough serve and lobs it short or mid court, doesn't tell the front player, nor does the front player watch the return, see the lob, and retreat back. Yes, while retreating, expect the ball to come your way and be ready! If they don't retreat, the front player usually ends up getting hit with the ball in the body or even the face. Even if they do see the lob, it amazes me that they still stand up there at the net especially older women who don't have fast hands facing players with little smash control. A veteran player told me he will target the overhead smash at the player in front for an easy winner. I always tell my partner to let me know if they are going to lob so I can retreat back. Obvously, the goal is to hit a deep lob and run up. Last week, my partner threw up a poor low lob from behind and the Neanderthal male opponent jumped all over it and smashed it at my face before I could jump out of the way. Indeed, it's important to wear protective glasses when playing pickleball! I noticed that not much is said about similar play situations with one back receiving, lobbing, with the other at the kitchen line.

Do you stack? To me, it makes sense for lefties playing with righties to stack so that you always have forehands in the middle. You can then cover the middle really well and you force your opponents to make the down the line outside shots to win.

Unless your opponent is an ex tennis player then point over! Just Kidding. I comment since I see so many videos and related comments regarding the lob. It is like code of conduct that if you play rec, you don't lob or folks won't play with you!
Edit 11/8/23. Last week, I played a game where I hit a female player on the side of the head when her opponent sent up a lob against me. It was a good lob where I only had time to jump and swing the paddle. She felt she was targeted. I apologized profusely but it was one of those instances where I don't have time to think "don't hit it hard against your female opponent" more like, just get it. So again, players complain about lobs and also if you lob, some may come back hard in a smash. So expect it. Like if you speed up and attack, expect a counter attack.

In doubles, your chance of returning an overhead smash from the kitchen is very close to zero, especially if the person hitting the overhead is mid court...in the transition zone.
