  • Chatsworth House, the historic home of the Cavendish family, is a vast estate that once spanned 35,000 acres. At one point, Chatsworth employed a staff of 40 people to maintain it - including two full-time window cleaners.

    Some relevant facts :
    The house was open to the public from the day it was built.
    The Chatsworth estate employs many more people on farms, shops etc.
    The house is owned by a trust now, it is a business and charity and brings in huge amounts of money to the area from tourism.
    The Cavendish family still live there.

    the gardens and a large portion of the house is open to tourists - I went there in 2018 (I had a work exchange to the UK and tried to visit as many places as possible). I think the tourism makes a lot of revenue but I’m not even sure if they break even because the renovations the place has undergone are staggering!
    the art alone that is displayed made the trip worthwhile (everything from a Damien Hirst to many old master’s). My favourite was the long fountain steps (like man made rapids)....

      It's a Duke's castle. They made their money by banking, lending land, etc. Idk about blood money, unless you're talking about the whole of England's nobility in general.

      @@a11osaurus Not at all. I have no desire to be "rich." I AM rich in the things that really matter in life. Love, family, health. Things that often escape the wealthy. Studies have shown that once one is, let's call it, "very comfortable," there is no gain n happiness no matter how much more money they have,
      Nor do I dismiss those who earned great wealth by providing goods and services for us. Gates, Buffet, Musk, Bezos. Good for them.
      All of which has nothing to do with income inequality except those very wealthy avoid paying their share of taxes that would support the social infrastructure that has allowed them to thrive.
      I grew up when the USA had the least income inequality. CEO income to their average employee ratio was about 40:1. Now it's 400:1. Money stolen right out of the worker's wallets, even with greater productivity.
      My first job was minimum wage, $1.65/hr, I think. That's about $20/hr today. So, $15/hr isn't even catching up with 50 years of inflaction.

    Bet that plane crash was no accident. Can you imagine how flipped out the crown would be if that woman lived & took all her inheritance to the US! That would frost a pretty load of crumpets!

    • @laun4724
      @laun4724 3 года назад +1

      Haha, she couldn't have inherited the state, her own husband died before becoming a Duke. It was his brother Andrew who inherit the title.
      However, without a son, a male relative would've taken the title and Chatsworth as residence.
      As a widow she would have been well looked after and allowed to live in a nearby property.
      There were many Americans in British aristocracy, even to this day. Nothing dark about it. 🙂

    • @seriouslyreally5413
      @seriouslyreally5413 3 года назад

      Thats not possible. There are very strict laws of inheritance that go back hundreds of years that title and landed estates are passed on to male heirs not sisters, aunts or even widows. Primogeniture, or Entail meant the title of the land and all the fortunes were passed on to first born male heirs then second born male until a distant male cousin was found on a far off branch of a family tree. Women folk were given a trust as a dowery so that she might marry well if the heir was particularly generous but the bulk of the inheritance went to men. Many a young lady was turned out to the kindness of a poorer relation when she had no brothers and a distant cousin took over the family estates. Thats why so many Kings and Noblemen and everyday rich guys were so desperate for a male heir. While Henry VIII changed the law for Queen Elizabeth-I to become queen in order to preserve the line of succession for the Monarchy the rest of the country was still beholden to the Entail or Fee Tail laws. Kathleen Kennedy would have been given an allowance and the use of part of the Estates until her death but the title of Duke and his fortune would have ( and did) pass on to a brother of her husband.
