we all trying to hack our car thing before December?
yep. It's the one device that i actually enjoy and use daily.
I just traveling to buy one second hand lol
Yes really hoping they release open source something
Yep fuck Spotify.
Not sure what else Spotify expects lol
Watching this at 2 am while not having a car thing
same lol
(timezones)
same lmao
😂 same.
I just found out car things exist
its 2:51 currently in brazil.
i think the algorithm knows that this is definitely a perfect 2 am video
They just announced the full discontinuation of car thing today. It won't work anymore after December 9th 2024. This is an absolutely necessary video. I'm sure someone will develop a new OS that works with the "thing" soon.
Immediately searched for this video after getting the email
@@coolcj15 Same, so annoyed. They literally tell you to trash the car thing, how about making it open source instead of bricking every unit Spotify?
I was so sad to see this announcement
Yeah I was pretty pissed off to hear about that. Another example of companies doing shity things with the things they make, forced obsolescence and entropy.
That's why I'm here
I too am here to prevent my Carthing from becoming e-waste.
Does this Tutorial really help with it?
it may, it's impossible to know before Spotify cuts it off.
At this point you lose nothing if you brick this lol. Better to try and mod this rather then listen to spotify.
Exactly! 🤣
bricking is BS anyway, you can use a hardware flashing tool.
@@ChrisWijtmanselaborate more on this plz
@@GreatTaiwan if you "Brick" a device you've either messed up the software or the hardware. Modding is usually hardware, "Hacking" is software. If you hack your device you're changing the stored programs, if the device no longer works because of the hack you've implemented you can flash the chip and restore the software to default assuming you backed it up first or have a source for the original software.
No wonder youtube's recommending this rn 😅
Thank you for raising awareness for what Spotify themselves considers e-waste
SEE I KNEW IT THEY'D FIND A JAILBREAK FOR THE SPOTIFY CAR THINGS
Increase the font size on the terminal next time
I Love car thing. Literally mounted it to the display of my non-working Honda radio. Hopefully I can hack it.
For anyone wondering, the install command is basically the same as the cp command, but it allows to optionally set file permissions, user, owner among others
Didnt even play doom on it...
it runs android. youcan install android port of doom on it
@@windows9773Can't wait to play DOOM while going 110 on the 401 Freeway. :D
U2 Pop enjoyer? You, my man, asides of being a hero you are a man of pure culture.
This only allows non premium Spotify accounts to use the car thing not stop it from being bricked
Spotify just announced that Spotify Car Thing will be discontinued and that the device will stop functioning. Is there a method to continue using car thing despite this upcoming change?
If there isn’t a killswitch already then it will probably keep working, since this version doesn’t update (I’m assuming). But there is also possibility that they have endpoints specific to Car Thing and they will just pull the plug and it definitely will stop working immediately. 😅 We just have to wait and find out haha
@@effeKtSVK If they do that then I will activate the kill switch on my Spotify subscription!
@@effeKtSVKthere is prob a killswitch already
Thank god for the internet.
Great tutorial video, straight simple and complete, congratulations
considering its android, isnt there a way to get an android auto system on there via a gsi or something?
why are you so underrated, you are awsome
"Thank you! I appreciate your kind words and support!
Want to turn it into a speed editor for DaVinci Studio
Play bad apple on the car thing!
Omg, I was waiting for this
I don't even own this thing, yet somehow this is interesting
You sir, are a legendary hero
8:41 - its an android device, you should just be able to (outside of the adb shell) adb sideload /path/to/an/apk/file
I'm not sure how you'd run the apk, youd probs have to first sideload a custom launcher then manually force said custom launcher as the default launcher.
its not. sometimes devices use adbd to interface with the device. it does not immediately mean its an android device.
also if you look at the contents of the root directory (/) you cant find any of the android specific folders (/data, /system, /product, etc.)
@@scripteralt321 if you look at the structure of the firmware dump it does however. All the expected vbmeta, system, etc partitions are accounted for
that is very weird if it doesnt use android.
I think the command is adb install not adb sideload
hey there anyone who is getting refunded do you guys need to send back the car thing?
you have to install them with the android package installer. the device is an android device on its core, so follow a simple "how to install/sideload apk from adb" and "how to run an app from adb" tutorial
Question: if the car thing is hacked to use Bluetooth as its main connection, would it be possible to connect the car thing to a pc?
I think there are already tutorials and videos of people using SCT on their desktop setups.
is that a gl502? i have such a laptop too
The reason why apt commands don't work is because the car thing uses android (not trying to be rude but I'm laughing because you tried apt commands which don't work on android). Instead, you would install apks. I believe you would use "pm install 'apk file name here.apk'" but I'm not sure as some android versions don't use "install"
Well what did you hack like more exactly
Id love more videos like that
I just got an email from Spotify that they're discontinuing the service, will this hack work without their service?
man... we were quick 😂
My guess is, unfortunately, no... This will only work as long as Spotify keeps updating the app to work with the car thing software, but since this video proves it is completely possible to flash a new OS onto it, someone is already working on a better OS that will continue to work with it... Hopefully the hardware will be strong enough to handle whatever they've got planned.
@@jxdinglol Do you think it's possible to make a 3rd party app on an android phone side of things to sort of route all media control to the soon to be bricked car thing?
@@budgillett Maybe? I'm not sure. It might be possible for Spotify to come up with an app that installs a version of Android Auto for the Car Thing via Bluetooth. Or someone else could reverse engineer how the OTA update process works and make their own 3rd party android app that does it, too.
@@budgillettIn theory, since it's basically a heavily modified Android device you could in theory make it run other apps.
If it were possible someone could make a spoofed version of Spotify that allows the CarThing to work while, on Spotify's end, it looks like a regular low end Android phone.
Hack to keep the thing running after they shut it off ?? please and thank you maybe
Is there anything else you can mod the car thing to do? I have one and don't use it it would be great to actually find a use for it
Unfortunately I have not yet found any other ways to add custom apps or functionality to this other than flashing the No Premium OS onto it.
I really hope for Android on this thing. It technically is capable of running Android, though the hardware is limited (512M RAM, 4G ROM).
If I can get Android auto or even Android itself to run on this, I will make a tutorial outlining how to do so. But it may need to be physically jailbroken to get root access for adb shell. No promises
@@DinosaurTalksTech WearOS would be functionnal but that's probably even harder
@@DinosaurTalksTechi think specs are enough for RockBox to run.
@@drill_fiend1097oh yeah definitely, i can run rockbox on my 3rd gen ipod classic if i felt like it
Does this work for every version of the car thing ?
And more importantly does it still works after their discontuation of the product
The latter, yes, since you're installing a different OS
Hi, been interested in making a diy one since im a cheapo and want the fun in making it, are there any mobile phone screens that can be adapted to hdmi with a converter? Purely the screen. I dont want a phone lmao
Hello, it is possible to find a phone screen and an adapter board, but your best choice is to buy an HDMI touch screen as this would be the most cost effective and provide less of a headache of trying to find a screen and adapter board.
Yeah, I agree. You could consider getting and using one of those Waveshare display kits that take a HDMI or DisplayPort input.
So, obviously, this video is about to be super popular, as I'm going to spread it around. But, I'm hoping that someone can clarify that this method could in theory continue it running even beyond the update? Specifically, I'd love to know if there is a way to disable this thing from getting updates, seeing as that is how they plan on bricking the device in December.
I would love to see if what you are saying is true. On the spotify side of things though, like the app on your phone they could push a forced update that wouldn't let Spotify connect with their own bricked device
They are not going to "brick the device" in December. They are going to "brick the phone app" by removing all the features that support Car Thing so they don't have to keep developing around it when it isn't making them anymore money. Your device won't receive an update, but it will stop receiving data from your phone.
If that's the case, then I'll just not update Spotify. I already don't update the app as it is
The thing that gets me is if there are car thing specific APIs out there or something of that sort, where they could just shut those off and then it's just screwed. No way around that as we sit now
Honestly since these things are going to be junk by the end of this year i think these could work perfect for raspberry pi projects.
i dont own one but would definitely pick one up for a pi so i dont have to connect it to a big monitor to use it
I perfer youtube music so im glad abt this
there should be a way to run an APK (android package) file with ADB or Fastboot. i believe its ADB run (app.apk) or ADB install (app.apk) and if you can install something like nova you have a full android device
Since Spotify is discontinuing in December does doing this allow it to still function? Thanks
@theroachmotel That is a good question, I am sure it will allow it to still function since doing this allows the user to connect to the Spotify Car Thing via Bluetooth instead of through the app. But Maybe I will make an short update video In December covering if this still works after they discontinue support.
@@DinosaurTalksTech I believe they are going to remove the phone app's Car Thing functionality altogether. You are also mistaken, the Car Thing has ALWAYS used Bluetooth. If you can find a way into the root directory or find a way to flash Android Auto onto the thing, you'd be many peoples' hero, including mine.
Second this
@@awsomDixie I am 90% sure it will not work, since the api is being closed for this device.
The only spotify connect "open source" software still working are the ones that pays spotify for api access.
The free api:s spotify USED to provide has all been closed down.
@@marcusjohansson668 here's the weird thing though. The thing works without an Internet connection at all when Spotify is in offline mode. So why would it be different going online? That's the thing that I keep coming back to
Real question here... Is this going to continue working after they discontinue it in December of 2024?? Really hope so... I depend on this thing in my car!
It will work
It would be nice if we could put linux onto it and use it for anything else
Someone send this to Louis Rossmann
Adb… so it runs android?
wait until you learn most car infotainment are just bespoke android roms.
0:35 Bricking…No that would be Spotify’s job
Can i control RUclips music if i play that threw my phone
Hello. I have not tested it myself. You should be able to pause and skip just like any other audio source. You will not be able to fast forward.
@@DinosaurTalksTechmissed opportunity for the knob on the side
based
Well shit, they did it fast
waiting for Bringus Studios to install SteamOS on it and play CS2
Same
I got it flashed but cannot get this thing to pair with my phone.
@lizardinthelites You need to go into the bluetooth settings of the device and pair it there instead of through the Spotify App
@@DinosaurTalksTech Thanks for reply, but yes that is what I am doing. My phone will "connect", but the device continues saying"pairing" and never pairs. The name of the device on my phone is also different than what the device says it should be.
What's common-sense? Is there a ppa for it?
not all heroes wear capes
i would probably run Doom on it
Damn, anyone tried installing PlexAmp linux package yet?
This makes me want to buy a car thing(i have no money)
Cool, but recommend stopping the compulsive clear. The screen is 90% wasted empty terminal and we can't see the stuff you just did. Also messes up your own ability to scroll back.
@thrift42 Thanks for the feedback. Someone has made the same comment as well and I have made note of that.
@@DinosaurTalksTechDon't use sudo su, use sudo -l instead.
Huh. What uses would this have? Not familiar with it, but it'll probably be a cheap toy now.
make it run ubuntu 20
don't forget: y'all can still get refunds from Spotify AND do this hack
Its now no longer a hack its a necessity if you have this
can't it just run KDE connect?
It should be able to, it's Android
This gonna blow up
Dude, if only to clear that check!!! Good golly that check is annoying! Let's get this thing reading an sd card with mp3's.
@Michael-Martell I will try to see if I can get the OS to read from a local storage device, like an SD card or USB flash drive. We will need root access, and then have to modify the OS to accept the local storage. If I am ever able to easily gain root access and modify the OS, I will create a video tutorial to follow suite for you all to do the same.
@@DinosaurTalksTech I'm not crossing my fingers but thats super dope! Look forward to watching!
@@DinosaurTalksTech Just got it working via my mac and brew. Thank you!
@@DinosaurTalksTech Well, Spotify just announced today that the Car thing would forever be no longer supported, so if any devs are gonna make it work, now's the time!
How did i know this would happen. I feel like i might buy one for cheap and hack it
s4vitar? why are u using that alias bro?
it says savitar and not s4vitar, don't know where you got that 4 from
also it's a name
time to get Android on it.
Needs a custom ROM
Me, watching ing 6 inch phone.
My eyes fully open ...
But still can't see the text
Yes. Many people have added this comment. I will make note for future videos to increase the terminal text size as well as the text at the bottom of the screen.. I will also add a transcript of steps in the description like I have written in the windows tutorial.
run doom on car thing now
gotta brick mine before they brick it for me
Turn the intro music up more I cant hear it..
Thank you, your comment is the only reason I'm still here.
Some one send this to Rossman lol
Well, this will brick it anyways, because of Spotify. Isn’t that lovely? ^^’
Get this video downloaded or something or else spotify will try to delete this😢
Why didn't they just open source the OS/firmware? It's just so wasteful.
Google did this as a final send off for stadia and people already dumped the one way Bluetooth flash
Did whoever make it not know what it was so badly that they didn’t know what to name it so they just named it a “car thing”?
apt-get 😢
everything runs android these days
Just shows the awesomeness of android. It is open source and free to use (at least the original AOSP)
2:14 is such an Ubuntu moment I'm dying
its apt now not apt-get
dont do sudo su, more like sudo bash
Quick tip: This is android, obviously the Debian package manager won’t work.
Rip lmaooo
The fuck is a Spotify car thint
bro why dont you all use android auto or apple car play lol
I hope people just install a media player or something 😂 APK file
This video is a waste of time. Sure, it is android, but all you have is a shell. It is better to spend your editing skills and time to intsall PostmarketOS instead of misguiding and clickbaiting.
Bro pls don't use root user, is fucking scary
Coward
an i the only one that thinks it could be a good screen for a 3d printer ?
