I agree... Joan is as BEAUTIFUL as ever and her voice still sounds wonderful to me even if the register is a little lower now by her own admission. Lovely clip!
According to me Baez is much better nowadays in 2017 than in the early 2000's. Maybe does she deal better with her "new" voice, I don't know, but I prefere to listen to her actually than in 2008, even if whatever she could do, I would admire her for her strength as an activist and as a woman.
Baez praised Ochs gifts in several interviews I've read through the years. She claims her highly controversial South American tour in 1981 was inspired out of guilt for her flaking out on the Ochs benefit for the Chile/ Allende tragedy. Didn't they appear together at the huge Central Park "War is Over Concert" (w/ that still toublemaking Harry Belafonte)? Ochs had high praise for Joan Baez's talent in repeated interviews as well.
Yeah, I've heard that, too. Liam Clancy went so far as to call Ochs a "jackal," which seems extreme. On the other side, Pete Seeger seems to have genuinely liked him. I think he said he thought Dylan and Ochs were the two best songwriters he heard.
She was at the War Is Over concert and dueted with Ochs there. I think that was his last big concert before the John Butler Train personality took him over. Sad. But it's wonderful to hear his songs played by such a talented musician.
Joan still sings beautifully. However I wonder about what age she was when she really noticed a great significance in the lower register of her singing voice? She used to have this incredible soaring soprano voice...and is it only age or other factors that cause the noticeable change from singing high soaring soprano to a lower register? I noticed it definitely with Joni Mitchell but she was/is a heavy smoker which did cause her vocal change but Joan was not a smoker.
From what little I've read about Ochs, it seems he was a decent enough guy, not malicious, though very neurotic and a bit of a pain in the ass to be around (and supposedly insanely jealous of Dylan's success), so Joan may have avoided him for those reasons. I did read that she did not appear at a benefit concert he had organized in the early '70s, which he took as a personal affront. She has always spoken highly about his talent as a songwriter though.
wow, great ... great interview, beautiful performance as always!!! Many thanks for sharing!!

Phil was worth a thousand of you, and always will be.
Paul Lavan No! Phil was more like ten thousand times better!!!. the
Very nice. Wish I could have heard her talk a little bit more about Ochs, but no worries. :)

Would love to have been there, thanks for the clip. Just read Janis Ian's new book. It includes some good Baez references.

my first love
I wouldn't mind knowing what she thought of him, especially since she was there during that time and she met him, knew him. It's called history.

She did not take part in the concert honoring to Ochs.
Antonio Serrano She owed Phil for 'fortune'! Dirty Bitch!..
