    A very good video and will be useful for years to come. Shame I didn't get to watch it before I were to order my mask and had to do all the research myself
    By the way, the Leon Paul X-Change mask now does come by default with mesh painted black from the inside

    I bought a Leon Paul Titan Hema mask from my local dealer. They told me that LP changed the design after a year or two based on feedback from the HEMA community. The only design change was that they tempered the mesh to the same hardness level as the FIE Coaches mask.
    I hit the FIE coaches mask and Titan HEMA mask with the bottom of my fist several times in the store. The Hema mask had much sturdier mesh.
    The only downside I see to the Titan HEMA mask is that the bib is so stiff that it causes the mask to slide up my face when I look down - because it barely bends.

    been using the faits d'armes 1600N mask for 2 years now and it's been doing pretty well. it fits e well, doesn't budge and i still keep a scarf on mky head to ensure extra grip. mask never hit my face head on yet. this week did grase my forehead a bit but mostly because the other guy was being WAAAY too unreasonable in the thrust. but still didn't leave a mark. pretty good for a first mask

    Good video. For my money the Wakusa Cobra is the best longsword mask on the market today. It's a bit warm, but nothing even comes close the the level of protection it offers.

    I have the PBT warrior and I do recommend it. The only dent I received was simple enough to reform (with a dowel, rag, and a rubber mallet). My only warning is it is fairly heavy compared to many other masks, so if you have a weaker/thinner neck see if someone at your club has one so you can feel the weight.

    If you want to buy the best mask ever, get a Tindal. Mr. Tindal has stopped making them but I've heard someone is making them again. They have a leather suspension system so it doesn't actually sit on your head. The bib is riveted with rings and leather. Even has a back of head cage that can attach.

    Thank you kindly for this video. It's been super informative. As a beginner UK based HEMA practitioner (and by beginner I literally mean 2 sessions in) I may have to go with the Red Dragon simply due to the availability. Gajardoni looks great but as you said is impossible to find, and while Pbt warrior is available for the price of mask and overlay I could get Red Dragons mask, overlay and trousers :)
    Anything you found particularly poor about the red Dragon tournament mask? :)

    My experience is that Leon Paul new generation (last 5-7 years) are far to soft for longsword. We bend a mask during a strike to the head and broke a facial bone cause of the deformation.

    • @FedericoMalagutti
      @FedericoMalagutti  3 месяца назад +1

      I’ve noticed that in the Titan back in the days, but my Coaching mask, 4 years, and never had a single deformation after 20 tournaments and hundreds of sparring hours on top.

    Quick question my friend. Di you think the red dragon 350N mask is OK for synthetic sparring? A friend gave me one to loan and according to the measurements I should be a small, however the mask almost touches my nose when I move. I have tried their medeum however it moves around too much. I occasionally get a bonk on the nose but it's not too bad. got any advice?

    • @FedericoMalagutti
      @FedericoMalagutti  3 месяца назад +3

      About the first question. For a synthetic it could be ok depending from the synthetic. The Red Dragon 350 Newton is kind of a "special" 350N as it has a better mesh than the average 350, but sometimes certain synthetic are able to deliver a lot of damage during certain actions, so just play with a little care while thrusting, for example.
      Now, taking in consideration your problem with the nose, this is boring. My advice is to get a kind of mask which has enough space for it, so among the one I mentioned, the PBT could be a good choice, also the Faits d'Armes one should. If you can't, and you have for some reason to go for a red dragon, buy an M and then put an American Football head protection underneath it, the one they use as a padding under the actual helmet, it should do the job.

    • @lumagatto1191
      @lumagatto1191 3 месяца назад

      Synthetics being able to do a lot of damage is true. I broke my rib taking a tip with one. Never using them in heavy sparring again.

    Thanks for your video!
    im a complete beginner and bought a allstar mask that fits me kind of well but my problem is:
    every time i look down the steel ring of the mask pushes my larynx in..
    never did sparring with someone else but i would imagine getting a blow on the lower end of the mask would be pretty painful if not damaging something..
    is that something i have to get used to? or do i have the wrong size mask?
    thanks in advance, and thanks again for your awesome videos!

      First of all, get a throat guard if you do not already own one. That said this is a very specific problem I never stumbled on before, If the mask is very tight it may be the wrong measure, but if it’s not it may be that it’s a coincidence of a specific mask shape and your specific physiology. I can’t really be of help in this case!

      @@FedericoMalagutti Thank you very much for the lightning fast answer! :)
      got a throat guard already, but it seems like you say a specific physiology problem..
      í thought nothing can go wrong as the head size is pretty neat in between the measurements that allstar has given for the size but my head seems to be too long and thin at the same time.. XD
      Thanks again! really appreciate your response!

    I've thought about getting a Leon Paul X-Change, but I've heard that getting back of head protectors to fit well is difficult because of how they design their strap. Any recommendations?

    • @FedericoMalagutti
      @FedericoMalagutti  3 месяца назад +3

      In all honesty I don’t find any problem in it. The SPES unity overlay suits it perfectly, and I can put it on and off very easily.

    • @YT_Lucks
      @YT_Lucks 3 месяца назад

      @@FedericoMalagutti Thank you for the response. Do you use yours with the extra HEMA padding that they sell or without?

    • @Alambic56
      @Alambic56 3 месяца назад +1

      I have a Leon paul hema titan and there is absolutely no problem with overlays. We have a bunch in my club and it fits all overlays like Spes Unity and Trinity.
      One bonus with the titan, you can remove the backstrap as the overlay is enough to keep the mask on your head. Super easy to get on and off

    • @Alambic56
      @Alambic56 3 месяца назад +1

      @@YT_Lucks I have the hema extra padding. I only use the one of top of the head, I can't fit the pads on the side and under the chin. If you want to buy it keep in mind that it's pretty thick, so you'll probably have to take a size above. The best is to try different sizes if you have access
