I had the exact same issue with my 1DX MK1 as the shutter mechanism throws oil all over the sensor. Had to have mine professionally cleaned by fixation near enough on day 1. Canon did a recall in the end and modified the shutter/mirror housing (probably just wiped of excess lubricant in real terms) I can’t believe that canon have let this happen again on the 3rd incarnation of this model, for a Pro spec camera they really should be well on top of this issue. Keeping my money in my pocket for the moment until this gets fully resolved.

yep, thx for the comment and it shows this is wider spread than the doubters believe. better off with mirrorless, Canon mirrorless does not have this issue as there is no Mirror to flap about, My thoughts on why Canon have just tried to brush this under the carpet so to speak is because they had the mirrorless full frames in development and thought that they could just push one more very expensive model out having not fully tested it. I was shocked to see another 1DX mkiii DSLR made, I thought they would have gone mirrorless the the 3rd generation model.

My 1Dx2 has suffered with similar spots. It’s been to canon 3 times. They say when you fire at high frame rates you will compromise with a bit of oil splatter and shavings from the shutter. The camera is as they say designed for sports photographers who shoot at f2.8 and you won’t see these spots. I personally am appalled by this issue and had hoped they sorted it on the new model

Send it to them they will take care of it and ask them to send you a loaner while they take care of this one for you. The camera is a stellar and thanks for sharing your findings.

An update on my 1DXmk3 saga. I picked up body number 4 at 11am from WEX and it was back by 2pm for a full refund on the camera, additional battery and CFExpress card. Although it was from a different batch the same problem was evident and appeared to worsen as I took 160 shots. It wasn't only visible at F22 and I could still see the problem at F8. A big shout out to Steve at WEX in Bristol and the WEX Team. They have been first class. A pity Canon couldn't deliver a camera fit for purpose after 4 attempts. I'll look at the R5 or maybe ditch Canon totally and go with the Sony A9II.

Yep and look at all the comments of all the disbelievers, your comment just shows what this camera is really like, and to top it all a 6.5k camera at that, Canon should recognise this as an issue and resolve it if not then it is simply not worth the mortgage you have to pay for it simples.

@@ironian24 Yep it sucks big time and those that doubt it contact me and I'm willing to supply the images and camera serial numbers if needed. WEX have told me they are taking it up with Canon and I will be starting on their customer support later today. It's sad as for wildlife and sports it's a great camera but I put some of my images out for stock and can't have blemishes on images that take forever to clone out or have repeated sensor cleaning. I px'd a 5D4 for this and have just bought another until the R5 or maybe a 5D5 becomes available. If the AF is good and EVF lag minimal it will be the R5 but only after 6 months of user experience.

Hi over the years I’ve been using the Canon 1DX, 1DX Mark II and now the 1DX Mark 3 my experience with these models, the first 1DX was recalled by canon because of a problem with the shutter, canon sorted the problem with lubricant.
we now have the 1DX Mark 2 and my opinion it has a problem with either the shutter mechanism or the mirror box, I don’t believe it’s anything to do with the sensor for those of you that think it’s dust I personally believe it’s not dust. I have watched my mark 2 being cleaned in a dust free environment the lens put back on and fired again at high speed 14 frames a second and the sensor examined again only to find it’s covered in fragments yet again this has to be from the shutter or the mirror box Canon knows about this problem, so I moved on to the mark 3 , Ian at IR Photo Tours demonstrates the problem still exists I am very disappointed with canon. I have used Canon 7D Mark 2’s and all of the 5d range I own 2 5D Mark 4’s and don’t have to clean the sensor every time I use them.
So my verdict is that Canon has taken the 1DX Mark 2 and 3 to far because I strongly believe either the shutter or the mirror is grinding itself to death and fragments from this is being thrown onto the sensor. If you think I’m going to pay £6,500 and have to clean my sensor every time I work with the 1DX Mark3 the answer is NO WAY hence why I have now returned my mark 3 for a full refund.

On my 1DX is it sometimes about 500 spots and that within a week of cleaning the sensor by a company called Chipclean in Holland. Just for the record, Sony are having shutter issues with the A7 3 and A7r3 s with pieces coming off the curtains causing light leakages and possibly sensor damage, ouch! Nikon had trouble with their flagship D5 as well with oil getting onto the sensor, Fuji have problems with shutter failures on the XT3’s, as mine failed in less than 1000 actuations, luckily under warranty. With anything high performance, you’ll bound to get issues same with performance cars at £100,000 plus, Ferrari’s are notoriously fickle and aren’t as reliable as folks may think.

IR Photo-Tours Oh I agree with you 100% I was saying run a few more test to see if at lower fps does it do better? But yeah you're absolutely right, there's more problems than the one you identified like it locks up the OVF in continuous burst and goes to sleep. Canon admitted to that. It also doesn't have 24fps in 1080p, banding in e-shutter, the dual pixel autofocus in video is inferior to the Z6, no time lapse, and they've had some bad batteries only giving some 200 frames and not 2000+
Crazy thing is the Angry Photographer while having lots of good info and insight might be super wrong about both the 1DxIII and D6. I wonder if the D6 has the same problem.

john brown no, because it is about the high frame rate and lubricant on the mirror mechanism that is the problem, high mechanical shutter spreads the oil over the sensor, this in turn means you need to clean the sensor until the oil has finished spreading it all over the sensor, at 6.5k of camera only you would expect perfection, I know I would.

I have fired of the shutter on high speed again and the spots are increasing and the lens has mot be changed from the mount. The worrying fact is the image is obviously going to eventually get softer as more time progresses. Will I constantly need to clean the sensor on a 6K professional camera which will eventully cause debris to deposit on the sensor. These spots look very similar to the pattern i had with my old 1DX Mark 2 which were OIL SPOTS.

I had this on the mark ii and was fairly sure the mark iii would have it too. Seems I was right. My mark ii had HUNDREDS of spots, and the people saying you never see them in real-world use are wrong. Obviously more are visible at f22 (not real-world use for me), but I had some visible at f4. Fine, you can edit it out of stills, but it's a pain for video. Canon told me it wasn't a known issue when my 1DXii was sent in, but lots of other people had reported it too so...
They cleaned mine, and a couple hundred shots later (literally a couple hundred) there were dozens and dozens of spots on it again, all circular implying it's liquid. Not good enough.

Dehaze causes 'almost' more artefact issues in images than any other adjustment outside of exposure. But if you still think it's an issue, just shoot in live view with the electronic shutter hahaha. All 1D's have oil spots (if your looking for them), or all of mine have, my 1DX3 has about 15 MINOR spots at f45 on my 500II(shot at 700mm), who shoots at f45? Then to dehaze and look for them? You will find them on nearly any ILC, I agree it's tough to accept on a new camera, but sadly its fact of 1D life. As a pro I dont quite understand why your so down about it, return it to the dealer, another will be the same, send it to CPS or hand it over at an event, clean it your self, it does ease over time, with all the moving parts involved and the speed it must be impossible to avoid some debris on the sensor, I don't worry about it unless it starts effecting my images and it never has, f16 would be a high for me 99% of the time, maybe studio work or some moon shots at f11?? Anyway, for those who read this buy one, this is an incredible camera, and you should get a high level of support for issues like this, Wex would change mine no question I KNOW, but, tbh this is making a big deal over nothing, oh and please blogger, Regards.

I'd be very careful what you say. Firstly, is this a one-off issue that YOU have and noone else has experienced, or are loads of people reporting it? Secondly, you casually claim its not dust, its a brand new sensor. How scientific of you! So you don't check it out and see if there is dust (new or not, irrelevant) you just brazenly claim it isn't dust. If it turns out to be dust or turns out it's a one-off faulty sensor, then you are responsible for ruining the reputation of a camera. Make sure you get your facts right before blabbing to the world what you believe. You said it yourself that you're no expert (regarding sensor issues).

Firstly this is not a one-off issue, Secondly I had the MK2 doing the same thing it IS an issue on the 1DX Mk3 the video shows it. Do you use a 1DX Mk2 or 3 ??

Thx for the comment, where I live you have freedom of speech especially when it is factual, I do not need to be a scientist to shoot at a sky at f/16 at 16fps to show the spots, have a look at the images at the end of the vlog some are un-touched and still show the spots.

@@ironian24 I simply recommended you to be careful what you say. I'm not the one who could get sued, so not my problem. Where I live we also have freedom of speech.
Oh and as for your freedom of speech, I notice you changed the name of the video LOL. Anyway, I enjoy your videos, so I'm sorry my only ever comment was a negative one. You have a good channel.

@@davidblake3941 I didn't say it is a one-off instance, that's why I posed the question. If lots of people report this issue then obviously it is an issue. If they don't, maybe it is a one-off issue. If this was an issue on the 1DXii, it would be very possible on the 1DXiii. Why wasn't it blabbed all over the internet for the 1DXii? You know how people love to attack cameras, especially the anti-Canon brigade. I never saw one video on it. Obviously, that doesn't mean there wasn't one, but it certainly wasn't common knowledge.
      No, I don't use a 1DX series camera.
