Great little review Barry - I have 2 of these, haven't used them for 20 years!! Really nice to hear a clear and informative review - to the point and extremely listenable (no annoying background music!) Excellent, many thanks, subscribed!!
Thanks for the review/demonstration. I have a few M500s and also the re-make V90r and I like their clarity - though I tone down the highs a little. Just to say that I haven't found phantom power to be a problem, I think the issue is with older ribbons mics that don't have a transformer. The Beyers do, and that isolates the ribbon from the power source.
Great video Barry! I just picked up one of these and it was nice to see a demo (I have to install a new ribbon). Any tips for setting it up to pick up sound from an old combo amp? (I’ve got a late 70s silver face champ) Thanks!
Congratulations! I'd avoid using a ribbon mic in extremely high SPL situations (snare drum close micing etc). For guitar amps, I'd usually start with the mic off-center from the middle of the speaker cone (between the outside edge and the middle where the speaker dust cap is). At the speaker center, the pickup may sound brittle and off-balance, too near the outside speaker edge may be too soft. Adjust to taste. For live sound, I'd be right up on the grille, in studio I'd probably be backing off a foot or two to give a bit more "air". As always, move it all around while listening on headphones til you get the tone you like best. It's a nice mic, I like the character, and I hope it works well for you.
Never used one, but it was made by Beyerdynamic and should be identical to a Beyer M69, so I'd expect it to be a great mic. I don't think those versions have XLR connectors, so you probably need to use a custom cable.

Great tip! Thanks for the info!
ABBA were also using this microphone during their 77 tour !

I have a Strässer M17 N I wanted to know what you think, is it a good microphone?

I always cringe when I think about durability on ribbons...not that I really know.
Agreed, which is why I rarely use these at live shows.
It's a brighter sounding M160. Not my cup of tea.
