As a big Edison fan, I legitimately want to hear MBT's rant about Oppression. Personally, I think it's fine as there are to many effects that it doesn't hit like Vayu or Treeborn that allow strong plays to happen even under Oppression. Additionally, the card being 2 sided is interesting and forces you to only play it when you feel like you have control of the game, almost making it a "win more" card. But that's my take on it, I'm curious what MBT thinks, so I'm sad the rant got cut.

Right now there’s and XYZ festival in master duel and they have Flying C legal. Prevents your opponent from XYZ summoning in the XYZ festival. So people are running slower control decks that don’t use XYZ decks. Best decks are Labyrinth, Ben kei otk, and witchcrafter.
Wasn't that already a problem with earlier festivals that people just played Eldlich and shit that didn't even use the ED? How haven't they fixed that problem yet?
Good news, XYZ roach got sniped. Bad news, you're still playing in the XYZ festival. I figured Zoo was still one of the best decks, 4 mat Zeus and a gorillion hand traps ain't nothing to scoff at. Even if the bug went though, you've definitely got enough disruption to live for a turn.
Seeing the developments in HAT are super interesting. Handtraps are more popular and some builds of decks have changed. The new best deck, CAT is countered by HAT funnily enough, so new players often get a favorable matchup against the best deck since everyone starts off by playing the namesake deck of the format!
Highkey, on oppression exactly, I think that it's perfectly fine before ~solved~ edison's. For exactly what was mentioned, but Edison ~solved~ gives modern deckbuilding an advantage
@@Finalblue1234 the TCG is lucky there. On the OCG, it was only banned last summer, when Circular got released and @Ignister used the Mathmech XYZ to search it.

To the person in chat who said "Half the Format?? It's 3 cards!" In response to the trinity reply: In a 40 card deck, drawing >=1 of a set of 3 cards is a little under 35%. Given they're basically always in both players' decks, that means there's ~56% of games starting with either Pot, Graceful or Duo.
Believe it or not, the consensus on Vanity’s was that it was a bad card up until Ruler format when 1 guy topped a YCS with 3 in his deck. The combination of Rulers being the first good deck that could abuse it and most good decks running less and less back row made this card a must play. When it came out, there weren’t many hand traps so you had to have the maxed out Solemn package, and other good traps, in order to have a chance at most games and Vanity’s contradicted that mindset since it would send itself to the grave the second you tried to stop a Normal Summon.
Also Emptiness was bad because MST was literally Twin Twisters against that card. And you couldn't turn it off super easily without going neg. Eventually both of those stopped mattering.
Kudos for fast-forwarding the Royal Oppression explanation. You either flip it after combo's been established and keep control of the board, or you don't, but even if you don't it is a terrible card to have in the format. BLS in Tengu is nowhere as bad as BLS in Goats. Still pretty powerful yes, but by then there were more tools against it. Solemn Warning, Veiler, it could eat an Honest/Gorz/Trago, get Gale'd and having Synchros means more decks can more consistently get rid of it in general. On the other hand Edison is like going back to the Synchro era without half of the most iconic cards in the Synchro era like Quickdraw, the Plant engine, Veiler, Duality, Agents, post-FTK Frog variants, T.G, omni-HERO decks (not just Ab 0), usable but adequately restricted variants of DARK, LS, and Blackwings, etc. Edison has its charm but I think it is oversold in these takes.
I’ve been playing Goat semi competitively for a year now. Graceful and Pot are fine in isolation, but I legitimately believe the format is ruined by Delinquent Duo. I cannot stress how incredibly frustrating it is to just instantly lose from duo hitting a one in five in your opener and sniping your chaos, your own trinity, etc. I’ve decided to give up on it entirely because the ceiling is so high that often it just comes down to “who gets trinity first” and that sucks
Reminds me of how old Magic was in that there was a lot of good mana acceleration and card draw spells only it didn’t really matter as the best boards to end on involved like, a 7/6 with a penalty effect that could also die to the loads of excellent removal spells in the format as well. Discard spells usually weren’t an issue because they tended to be overcosted but yeah, everyone would have played Hymn to Tourach (similar card to Duo) if it didn’t cost anything lol.
Agreed, I think Graceful and Pot are fine mostly since they don't change game state THAT much (7 cards to 6 is fine) but Duo is just a win the game card going first or even second a lot of the time. It's way too strong if you hit ANYTHING good with it and being at 4 cards to 5 with an established board matters way more than 6 cards to 7 from Pot or whatever.
@Seven Nights 6 to 7 and 6 to 4 (while your opponents loses a card as well) is the same thing (in both cases you make card economy 17% better than your opponent's). The problem arises when your opponent resolves Duo when he is already ahead in card advantage: -Opponent has 6 cards and you have 5: by resolving POG he would shift card economy in his favour by 17%. If he resolves Duo: he passes from 6 to 5 while you pass from 3 to 5, summed up he gets a 23% advantage. -Opponent has 6 and you have 4: doing the same calcs your opponent gains 33% by Duo. On the other hand, and I'll save you the cals, when you are behind in card advantage you ALWAYS want to resolve POG instead of Duo cause the net gain is higher. That being said: POG and Duo are equally sacky depending on the game state. The thing is you can still play around Duo in some capacity (i.e. sinister serpent, Thunder dragon, Assailant) while if they resolve POG you just have to deal with it. To sum it up: Graceful>>POG>Duo. Peeking your top 3 while setting up your GY and turning it to a plus 1 thanks to Serpent, Assailant or TD makes it hands down the most sacky card in Trinity. Edit: Also filling up your GY after being hit by Duo helps Chaos a lot. Another argument in favour of POG being better.
on the contrary, i think graceful is definitely the most toxic of the three. there are so many ways to play around Duo, or to construct your deck in such a way as to minimize the EV of duo. you can play thunder dragon, night assailant or sinister serpent. you can play a deck like warrior that sets its hand. but with graceful charity, the ability to sculpt your hand, to see three deep, to convert into a plus one with the same cards that stymie duo, to set up your graveyard...this one card does WAY too much.
@@ivanmaterazzo2631 Running night assailant or TD is not "playing around Duo" it's deckbuilding and even then it is only a deckbuilding choice available to basically 1 deck, Chaos. See how many people are running night assailant and TD in Warrior or any deck that is not chaos. That's not an argument for it being worse, that's an argument for it making one deck better. Serpent at least is flexible but it's also a 1 of so saying "hopefully duo hits when you have serpent" is wishful thinking. My point was also that being down cards at the start is significantly worse than both players being up cards but having 6 or more to choose from. I would argue having 3 cards against 4 is a bigger disadvantage than 6 cards against 7, that was the whole point. You have less tools to problem solve with and less ways to hit your engine and cohesive strategy. Some decks do very well on fewer cards (Warrior) but Chaos and basically every other deck can feel really bad when you only have a few cards and can't put everything together. Generally I think Pot and to a lesser extent Graceful can definitely sack games but over the course of a long game generally both players have a good chance to see it whereas Duo is basically disastrous early game and horrible the rest of it. Not to mention ripping cards can hit key pieces (Warrior lady, Breaker, BLS, Chaos Sorc) and leave your deck without important parts which is much worse than your opponent having 1 extra card generally.
Also, given how they never bothered to understand the other decks in the format and thus played them like dog water still makes me think it is a good format.
Ruler format when Super Rejuv was legal was honestly hell. I started playing Macro Rabbit (both dino and Evilswarm variants) to try and combat them. I didn't have fun.
I think tengu plant is much better if you play pre xyz or maybe only with the structure deck. As soon as you add in leviair and N17 tour guide breaks the game and BLS gets even better as a consequence. Extreme victory format doesn't even have BLS legal yet. I get that tour guide is iconic now and people want to play with it, but in that format it's basically the equivalent of stuff like grinder golem and dandylion post-links.
I still say in HAT vanity's is vastly overstated as good and Maxx C is also alright. Maxx C is only good against select decks and many decks can afford to just pass and lose a few life points. Vanity's people literally don't even run in that format. Seriously look at the deck lists of people winning events people are running for the format and tell me how many people are main decking let alone playing it. It's bad in a format with hands and 3x Artifact Sanctum 3x Artifact Ignition and ANY backrow that removes a guy and sends to GY. It's not good, seriously play the format.
If anyone hates the Hands, Soul Charge, and the Artifacts a lot then I’d recommend playing Vegas format. It’s the same banlist, but pre Dragons of Legend and Primal Origin.
As someone who exclusively plays goat format I have to agree. For the most “skilled” format there are some games that are ended simply because the opponent opened dustshoot duo or charity faith and you don’t have NOC
Dimension fusion in phantom darkness format. That card was a free otk. It didn’t even matter if the opponent got things back because you would just blow them away with zerato.
I'm just posting the comment because he skipped Thunder Dragon Colossus. There were multiple people who said they genuinely liked TOSS format, except for Colossus, and Joseph just skipped over them every single time.
Gotta agree with Joseph on Royal Oppression in Edison; most modern Edison lists don't run it, and in the lists that do, it's always in the sideboard. The card is only "good".
MBT: "Maxx "C" warps any format it's in around it, I do not understand why people enjoy this card in any format." Also MBT: "Royal Oppression in Edison is completely fine. I hope you're ready for my thesis on why I think this."
If you haven’t played Edison (I would recommend trying it) it really is only a powerful card but not even universally useful. One of the most common boss monsters in the format is caius which easily outs it or ignores it and dominates the board because it’s two sided Almost every deck can out it and Edison is a pretty slow format so they have time to find the outs plus it’s quite hard to set up otks and people just play monster removal so it being reciprocal really does matter
Just because Royal Oppression is a win con 2-3 years after Edison doesn't mean it is a win condition in Edison. Maxx C, at one point, was legal to play, and arguably a bad card against any deck that wasn't Six Sams.
I attribute the slow death of Master duel entirely to the sheerboredom of the pre-duel maxx c mini game featuring ash blossom from the required cards in deck series
Because no one even plays Cold Wave in Edison format. Like Opression Edision is just the right pace the card simply isn't that good. Heavy Storm is way stronger.
For context in the last large online Edison tournment (Deck Devistators 3) one deck in the top 12 mained Cold wave and one mained Oppression. Thats it.
@@ducky36FThere are some decks who play Cold Wave, most notably Lightsworms... who are amazing against backro anyways so is more of an assurance for specific decks than an actual great card.
Azathot being a recurring problem comes immediately to mind. The PK RUM used to make it on your opponent’s turn to completely shut off monster effects for the turn. Then the PK RUM and later Rusty got banned. And Lunalight would just hard summon it to insulate against hand traps and that turned out to be more than good enough. Fuck that card.
It took them a year and a half to ban it. If you weren’t summoning it on your opponent’s turn, you were using it to stop your opponent from interrupting your ftk
I quit playing for a couple years back in Dragon Ruler Spellbook format. You either ran Dragon Ruler, Spellbook or you lost. Hated that format so much as I didn't have the money to spend on a deck that could even remotely compete with the power those 2 decks had. I remember watching a few duels between the 2 decks and it always came down to who could out resource the other. Blow thru resources, set up board, do a bunch of battle damage, pass turn, end phase get a full hand back for next turn and hope your opponent didn't have otk. Remember this was Super Rejuvenation and Spellbook Of Judgment both at 3 so DRs were drawing a bunch of cards and Spellbook were adding their pieces for the crack back......hated that format so much
*sighs* Despite my roommate and I being in the game since it first came out in the west, neither of us were able to really take advantage of the game to play any of its formats to any real degree, so we have no real thoughts on this, sadly. We hope to change that with the local store that recently opened up, but that'll be a long uphill trek.
I'm a filthy casual, so it probably wasn't nearly as bad in the meta as it was for me (though it was certainly hit for a reason in that meta), but my first return to the game was in 2009, after quitting a bit after ~reaper format, while Rescue Cat was still only Semi-limited, and that card was it for me. If they were ahead, it was basically a delinquent duo plus Goyo and another synchro, and if they were behind, it was still just a one-card Goyo to stabilize. It's not like it was the only problem card in the format, but as a casual, I wasn't really seeing DAD and the like, while Rescue Cat was a common, Airbellum was a common, and Goyo was a Tin promo, so I saw Rescue Cat a ton.
Yeah, the card is a conditional draw 2 in HAT except when Soul Charge, but then again, SOUL CHARGE. That's strong, but not format-warping strong... well, is kinda format-warping, but in the "No, Infernity isn't a tier 1" *which is actually a good thing.* It became busted the next format with Pendulums and Shadolls... Or was it during PePe? I'm sure it was during MR3 though because the game became addict to special summon.
I loved soul charge, because I swear I was the only guy playing Tellars with Alsahm. They would soul charge down to 1000 LP, I go normal Alsahm? Dead if not stopped. Altair target alsahm? Call of the haunted target alsahm? Triverr/delteros summon alsahm?

not sure about charity or duo but im thankful that pot of greed is legal in goat format so that magician of faith has something to return. the "set a mof, protect the mof, set the mof with tsuk" gameplay is so central to goat format in my mind and it just doesnt work if theres not some power card for mof to return. i think encouraging this kind of control gameplay is vital to keep the format from just turning into a brainless aggro fest. of the three trinity pieces, pot of greed is unequivocally good for the format and duo is fine (its definitely more healthy than confi or forceful and creates some interesting dynamics where youre like "should i duo them? what if they have sinister?" or "do i set my cards? what if they have heavy? what if they have duo?") the only one i think might be toxic is graceful charity
I honestly wish that Konami would ban cards that permanently stop your opponent from Special summoning or activating effects because I came to play a 2 player card game not a 1 player Solitaire.
Special summoning is how the game became solitaire in the first place. Getting rid of it is just one step among many if you want the game to be a 2 player game again.
Maxx c was genuinely fine I'm hat so was vanity's. Vanity's is shockingly easy to out with a hand. Both hands pop a card then you can special so ice hand pop another backrow if it's an artifact that's ok it doesn't summon because vanity's is on the board for the trigger and gone immediately after. It prevents blowouts with sanctum into 3 artifacts via beagaltach. Maxx c also helped with these interactions. One of the very few instances of these 2 cards behaving as the max c was only more than an upstart if they chose to play into it
You can hear the gist of his argument in the vid. He's trying to argue that Edison has enought swing cards to get rid of it or flip it back, but that doesn't really pan out. There's just as many ways to protect Oppression as there are to pop it, and even if you do clear your opponent's board, as long as Oppression is up, at best you can only go even with your opponent rather than actually getting ahead.
Joseph must have had a bad run-in with Yami Marik to have Soul Charge’s banning date so thoroughly removed from his mind. Then again, one might call that a blessing.
Kinda curious what MBT means by mystic mine being an Albatros. My first instinct is something named after bad-luck Albatros in hearthstone (a card which existed to end the game for highlander decks specifically) but I can’t really imagine that‘s right
MBT didn't say that, he was reading the person that posted that twitter post said it. Associating albatrosses with bad luck or bad signs is a relatively common metaphor. It's like calling a black cat a bad luck sign, it's just a common figure of speech. Both this post and the hearthstone card are just 2 out of literally thousands of similar references to the 200+ year old poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
Your point on Tengu Plant only furthers my theory that Synchro Players have just been gaslighting people into thinking that Combo is the only way the game should be played.

I kind of feel ya. Then again, I dislike the Tear format because I hate most of the principal archetypes of the format. But Bystial and Kashtira are really high up there.
What's amusing ia some formats like reaper would have been better if there was more info and tournments back then. It's still a good format but if they had more info at the time you might have seen a lot of the game change historically.
6:14 The sheer irony that the card now could come off and actually be okay though is even more mind boggling (It's a worse change of heart nowadays since easier to stop)
Yes, but only at 1. Being searchable with the equip spell support, especially Power Tool Dragon, is VERY dangerous. And even at 1, the trap card that can equip it from deck turns into a quickplay change of heart wich can be dangerous.

Me too. Im curious when the stream was because I’d go back to find the VOD and listen to it
Here's the link to the VOD where he talks about it and fights chat: ruclips.net/video/Hhf6i0rXsfk/видео.html

PWWB and trap stun are often game winning if you can chain them to oppression mid-push. One stacks a dead card on top of their deck when they are going to need to contest your field. Trap stun locks the opponent under their OWN floodgate after you’ve comboed on them.
I still can’t believe both IO and Vanity were both legal at the same time on MasterDuel. Awesome game Konami. Thankfully it’s mostly better now.

Oppression is completely fine in Edison, even mediocre a lot of the time. You’re right.
Ehhh, it depends. My issue is that it favors mostly already great decks. That being said, it's a format where Cold Wave is legal and isn't a big deal so...
Im surprised nobody mentioned Djinn in Nekroz format, Kaiser Colosseum with Bujins, the Master Plan situation whenever Spyral is meta, Fusion sub/Norden in Zoo meta...
a bit surprised the Dark Armed Dragon wasn't mentioned, I remember during History of Jank, during "TeleDAD Format" almost every week one or both would say something to the effect of "both of these decks are good and fun and interesting, unfortunately this was during TeleDAD".
TOSS Format; I can back the hate for Engage into Engage, but I still can't believe someone Ok'ed a non once per turn combination of Forbidden Chalice + Mind Control.
That super rejuvination into super rejuvination thing is the exact reason that I don't like Maxx "C". Whoever opens it first has such an advantage

@@youtube-kit9450 They did ban those cards last time we had the Xyz festival. Who knows why they didn't do it for this one as well.
@@youtube-kit9450 ah yes the 1st 5 events were just true Dragco every other game.
Thankfully, an emergency banlist is gonna take care of the flying roach.
Every week the intros made by Dire are better than the previous one. Someone give her a raise.
Highkey, on oppression exactly, I think that it's perfectly fine before ~solved~ edison's. For exactly what was mentioned, but Edison ~solved~ gives modern deckbuilding an advantage

People were also terrible at yugioh until 2014

MBT is literally babyraging because he didn't even try to learn the format. Tyler at TCGRewind had the patience of a saint in his reaction videos
goat format has a lot of tools to punish a less than skillful bls drop, namely ring and especially snatch steal
The problem arises when your opponent resolves Duo when he is already ahead in card advantage:
-Opponent has 6 cards and you have 5: by resolving POG he would shift card economy in his favour by 17%.
Nothing bad about Dark Hole in Tengu Plants. Its an equalizer.
Also, given how they never bothered to understand the other decks in the format and thus played them like dog water still makes me think it is a good format.
Honestly been playing edison so much and trap dust shoot can just win the game by drawing it.
Ruler format when Super Rejuv was legal was honestly hell. I started playing Macro Rabbit (both dino and Evilswarm variants) to try and combat them. I didn't have fun.
That one dude who said "mpregbt" in chat when the Verte point came up
I think tengu plant is much better if you play pre xyz or maybe only with the structure deck.
0:43 Patrick Hoban was also successful in asking duelists to side out Djinn as well :)
As someone who exclusively plays goat format I have to agree. For the most “skilled” format there are some games that are ended simply because the opponent opened dustshoot duo or charity faith and you don’t have NOC
There are so many ways to deal with faith in goat other than noc but I do agree, opening duo dust shoot gets old really quick
Dimension fusion in phantom darkness format. That card was a free otk. It didn’t even matter if the opponent got things back because you would just blow them away with zerato.

Gotta agree with Joseph on Royal Oppression in Edison; most modern Edison lists don't run it, and in the lists that do, it's always in the sideboard. The card is only "good".

MBT: "Maxx "C" warps any format it's in around it, I do not understand why people enjoy this card in any format."
Also MBT: "Royal Oppression in Edison is completely fine. I hope you're ready for my thesis on why I think this."
If you haven’t played Edison (I would recommend trying it) it really is only a powerful card but not even universally useful.
One of the most common boss monsters in the format is caius which easily outs it or ignores it and dominates the board because it’s two sided
Almost every deck can out it and Edison is a pretty slow format so they have time to find the outs plus it’s quite hard to set up otks and people just play monster removal so it being reciprocal really does matter
The fact that almost all of the relevant hand traps are UR told me all I needed to know when starting master duel.
Not enough people talk about Cold Wave in Edison format.
Because no one even plays Cold Wave in Edison format. Like Opression Edision is just the right pace the card simply isn't that good. Heavy Storm is way stronger.

If you weren’t summoning it on your opponent’s turn, you were using it to stop your opponent from interrupting your ftk
verte would be so fine if they limited it a bit more so its actually archetype specific instead of being something every fusion deck runs
Remember this was Super Rejuvenation and Spellbook Of Judgment both at 3 so DRs were drawing a bunch of cards and Spellbook were adding their pieces for the crack back......hated that format so much
Surprised he didnt make a joke about that Rush Duel spell card when he said "Fuck em". My ass wouldve said "OH I WILL"
*sighs* Despite my roommate and I being in the game since it first came out in the west, neither of us were able to really take advantage of the game to play any of its formats to any real degree, so we have no real thoughts on this, sadly. We hope to change that with the local store that recently opened up, but that'll be a long uphill trek.
the take about royal oppression is very accurate. it’s annoying when royal opp gets flipped in edison, but it’s not game determinative
Dark armed dragon was a ridiculously expensive single back in the day.

I'm sure it was during MR3 though because the game became addict to special summon.

not sure about charity or duo but im thankful that pot of greed is legal in goat format so that magician of faith has something to return. the "set a mof, protect the mof, set the mof with tsuk" gameplay is so central to goat format in my mind and it just doesnt work if theres not some power card for mof to return. i think encouraging this kind of control gameplay is vital to keep the format from just turning into a brainless aggro fest. of the three trinity pieces, pot of greed is unequivocally good for the format and duo is fine (its definitely more healthy than confi or forceful and creates some interesting dynamics where youre like "should i duo them? what if they have sinister?" or "do i set my cards? what if they have heavy? what if they have duo?") the only one i think might be toxic is graceful charity

Royal Oppression was never the problem in Edison Format
It's Trap Dustshoot Future Fusion and Brain Control.
One of the very few instances of these 2 cards behaving as the max c was only more than an upstart if they chose to play into it
I want to hear MBT's take on Royal Oppression.
Can you please upload it to the clips channel
Then title it something super clickbait like "Oppression is good actually"
You can hear the gist of his argument in the vid. He's trying to argue that Edison has enought swing cards to get rid of it or flip it back, but that doesn't really pan out. There's just as many ways to protect Oppression as there are to pop it, and even if you do clear your opponent's board, as long as Oppression is up, at best you can only go even with your opponent rather than actually getting ahead.
can we get the full Royal Oppression in Edison segment ? I'm genuinely interested. Is it in a clip channel ?
I might be the only one but modern without generic insta-wins would be a lot more interesting. I'm talking about you two borrelsword and accescode
Next one should be 'the most pointless eratas in yugioh'
Your point on Tengu Plant only furthers my theory that Synchro Players have just been gaslighting people into thinking that Combo is the only way the game should be played.
I dunno, I kinda thought messing around with Sixth Sense was fun. We new it was only sticking around for a very short period of time anyway.
My answer here is a much more personal vendetta but the bystials hands down almost ruined tear format for me, granted i played sky striker and this was the first format i played but even when i did play tear for all 2 weeks i had it i hated seeing the bystials, it is needed for tear but the bystials+ishizu shufflers made it feel impossible to play striker during that format and its even worse off now, thats partially why im building floo esp post statue ban
I kind of feel ya.
Then again, I dislike the Tear format because I hate most of the principal archetypes of the format. But Bystial and Kashtira are really high up there.
Bystials being quick effects were a massive mistake. If they were just cool extenders for Dragon Link and Branded they'd be way more tolerable.
I hate the design of bystials and really feel they limit what decks are able to be good, but also take that raye
5:12 MBT out of context
What's amusing ia some formats like reaper would have been better if there was more info and tournments back then. It's still a good format but if they had more info at the time you might have seen a lot of the game change historically.
I love Celtic Guardian format but I hate when the opponent is able to summon Feral Imp and Des Feral Imp to overlay into King of the Feral Imps.
100% feral imp in celtic guardian format
6:14 The sheer irony that the card now could come off and actually be okay though is even more mind boggling (It's a worse change of heart nowadays since easier to stop)
Yes, but only at 1. Being searchable with the equip spell support, especially Power Tool Dragon, is VERY dangerous.
And even at 1, the trap card that can equip it from deck turns into a quickplay change of heart wich can be dangerous.
I played tengu plant format for a bit, I found it boring, the best thing that came from it for me was that I bought 3 macro and 3 d fissure before it got unbanned. I just play HAT format as my old format.
