i hate to be that guy, but as someone who has worked in the produce industry for all my life, i can say with a good degree of certainty, that most of this is just old myths. yes, a *yellow* sunspot is a good indicator of a sweeter melon, its had more time to properly ripen and is probably a local product, meaning it was picked closer to ripeness than imported or shipped melons (dont go for lighter sunspots, those might just be blemishes and could mean nothing). as for about everything else, just a bunch of stuff our mothers and fathers came up with to make themselves seem a bit more competent in their fruit picking skills lol. the best way to tell if a watermelon will be sweeter than average or not is simply by cutting it, everything else is a guessing game. look for a longer, not wider, melon, with a decent sunspot and not too many blemishes (they dont come from pollinators or "sugar leaking out", they come from shipping and superficial damage) and when you cut into it, if it is ready to split wide open from the first cut, you made a good choice. if its too dense or doesnt want to split, you might have a mostly-water melon lol
Love pickling the rinds too! Brown sugar, white vinegar, water. My grandma used to make like a treat. Theres probably not anymore vitamins in it than the ripeness but it's similar to a cucumber
I was knocking on watermelons at the store n 1 of my kids asked what I was doing n I said “seeing which one is good. U know it’s good if it knocks back.”😂
What most people don't know is a lot of grocery stores will give u another one for free if the one u buy is no good. HEB always lets us hav another one no charge 😊
Sam's does too - I was at customer service once when a lady complained about the one she brought in (partly consumed) and they told her to go get another ine for free..
I learned this from a New Orleans produce vendor back in the 1980's. 1 - Use a straw - from a broom, or a drinking straw. 2 - Lay the straw across the middle of the watermelon. 3 - When the straw spins or turns - that is a sweet melon. It really works. Tried and true method for 40+ years!
THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing this! I was just at Trader Joe’s earlier today (in NYC), and one of the workers and I were trying to figure out how to pick the sweetest one! Luckily, we remembered the part about looking for the “big yellow spot,” but I literally didn’t know the other indicators of the bee pollination + sugar markings until your video just now! Truly appreciate you sharing your family’s knowledge with us!🙏
The yellow spot is where the watermwlon was sitting on the ground. Yellow because of no sunlight to that area. Very yellow beans it is an older more mature melon, because of the greater difference between green - in the sun - and yellow no sun area. Vine connection (belly button) should be dry and brown - mature, was ready to release. If green or moist, picked way too early.
I learned years ago to select for “yellow” and deceptive weight (is it heavier than it appears to look like it should weigh?). I’d say > 90% sweet to bland ratio pick for sure!👍😋
I thought I was just at new comments when I realized this was new, and I never realized you had to be very precise when your getting the best watermelon.
If you haven’t already you have to try watermelon with salt it makes it sweeter so if you don’t find a sweet watermelon you can add salt and it makes it sweeter
Thank you for your video. I think my mom been getting the wrong watermelon. She always get the melons that are darker green. I am going to use your way of picking watermelon from now on. ❤
I trying to do this every single time and I think that I have a great one it has a big Sunspot and all the blemishes and the black marks for the sugar and nice and heavy and sounds kind of Halo when I'm not going it and I get it home and it sucks and is tasteless and not sweet at all so I don't know what you're doing right and what I'm doing wrong but I do it the way you say and it doesn't work out for me and I will dig a new watermelon and just know I have the perfect one then I get it home and nope it wasn't a good one. 🍉
It’s a New World, unfortunately these people are LYING for clicks and views. I too have watched several videos followed every thing they said and so far REAL BAD. 1. I want to taste a GOOD SWEET watermelon so, so bad. Food is just not good like it used to be. 2. Watermelons may not be in season, and I have heard it depends on the region they’re in when it comes to them really being in season and ready to pick and eat.
So maybe it's just me but I'm having a problem in picking overripe watermelons. Yah they're sweet but also grainy and not juicy. If somebody knows a fix for that advice is greatly appreciated.
In my country, when we cut a good, juicy and ripe watermelon, it makes a loud noise, like something breaks. It's so ripe that it breaks when you cut it. And sure doesn't disappoints.
Well, there's one thing that you like Private Snowball, they don't serve fried chicken and watermelon on a daily basis in my mess hall! - Gunnery Sgt. Hartman ( Full Metal Jacket) 😂
Here is a real foolproof way picking a good watermelon: buy an old fashioned seeded variety not one of these seedless jokes which will always be extremely inferior even if you pick a so-called good one.
I've tried all these "methods" and can sadly say none of them worked, so now I just buy half cut up fruit that looks the redest and densest and that's the only "method" that has worked for me
The yellow spot is known as the field spot , meaning that is the spot where the melon has been laying on the ground as it has been growing . Unfortunately, nothing to do if the sun . All the best ,👍
The full lash showing every food reaction always so satisfying!! 🥰 great tip ty! I’ll keep note for next time, but how so u tell if it a scratch from pollination nd not objects?
I had a flashback when you stuck that knife in the melon. My parole officer did that to my head when I was five. I remember my screams were like echos and my eyes flashed real slow like striking a match one after the other. (Clint Eastwood whisper) I was not ripe.
I haven't bought one in a long time, but I'm going to follow these tips next time because the one time we bought a terrible watermelon, it looked basically the exact opposite of this one lol

Thanks! I thought so (about the blemishes)
Bro she didn't say it was a fact
This comment doesnt get enough likes. Thanks for pointing it out!!!
@@notsofunnyjokes1040 i mean she called it a "foolproof method" which, no hate, just isnt true, so i figured i'd comment on it 🤷
I get the brown spots but how could the webbing be from shipping?

To pick a good watermelon make sure the sun spot is yellow, the part where it was removed from the stem is brown and knock on it for a hollow sound
i just knock on it and if it sound hollow that’s the one i get. if it sounds full it has more water than sugar.
Interesting
@@jordiflower guess so!
I was taught that way too!!
That approach gives better outcome than the one in the video. The one in the videos isn’t correct…..probably ones in a blue moon…

Buy seeded not seedless. That how you pick a sweet 🍉
The real sweet ones have black steeds not white
"Come closer" 😂❤

When she said come closer like that ….. I almost did!
Bro !!!
LOL why am I laughing so much?!?
I used your method yesterday and the watermelon I pivked was so tasteless 😅
Me too I was all excited and it was so bland
It's not that those tricks are not true, but the fact that those watermelons are tasteless. It's how they're made. It's not your fault.
@@silviamagda no, in my country they're actually really sweet.

Come closer. You dont have to ask me twice.
😂😂
Excellent tips.
Check where the stem was attached. If it's dry and brown the melon ripened fully. If it's green the melon was picked early before ripe.
I thought I was just at new comments when I realized this was new, and I never realized you had to be very precise when your getting the best watermelon.
I so enjoy your channel
You're a beautiful soul ❤
I love watching your videos~ you’re so informative and I’m hooked .. thank you !!😊
You know the 🍉 is fcking fresh when you exactly hear that sound while you’re cutting it 😅 😭
Cheers from San Diego California
Thank you for sharing, will definitely try this!
Try eating it with bread 🍞 or sprinkle watermelon with spicy powder you will get addicted to this 😎 yum 😋
Best watermelon is orange inside. It's the sweetest always. No need to pick. Just grab.
Your beauty and health are a reflection of your food choices. Keep it up.
I’ve tried this method and yes, it really works 👍🏾
It doesn’t work all the time. I have always done that and at times it fails. Makes me so mad lol.
Looks yummy and tempting
Pretty much, every watermelon I get from costco is good lol. 😂 I don't even check for all those "features". They are just always good.
Same here for Publix. Watermelons aren’t something you want to cheap out on when it comes to the store.

No Black Seeds No Thank You
That's What That Good Ole Southern Summer Eating Taught Me 😉💪💪🦋
Thank you and thanks to your Dad!❤
Our watermelon has a large patch of yellow on it. It covers about 1/3 of the melon.
If you haven’t already you have to try watermelon with salt it makes it sweeter so if you don’t find a sweet watermelon you can add salt and it makes it sweeter

And look for large black seed when you cut it open. If there are no large black seeds, it's a GMO WATERMELON
We do the same in southern Europe, also abit sound when hit with a finger or two 👍✌️💯

It's seedless watermelon. Only kind I buy ❤

It's not ripe yet. It has white seeds which means it was picked up too early. Seeds must be black and that is when the watermelon is the most tasty.
