New subscriber. Been catching up with your Nica blogs and I appreciate the info. You cover real day to day needs such as getting a phone carrier and major concerns such as if Nica will become CR. Was considering Panama for a simple retirement but will look further into Nica. Do you think El Salvador or Colombia are worth looking at in the region? Thanks.

Welcome aboard! Thanks for joining our little community here. I'll do a video response to this after the holiday blitz is over. But quick thoughts.... I used to live in Panama, before I discovered Nicaragua, and it's amazing. It should definitely be a short list destination. El Salvador is very dynamic right now, but if they stay the course as they have been they are set to be very "Nicaragua like" in cost, safety, etc. but with a smaller country, more urban, with a better airport. Right now they are working on their track record. But they are looking like they have an amazing future ahead of them. Definitely shortlist them.
Colombia is a different animal. Huge country, rather than tiny. Generally slightly cheaper than anyone in Central America (and way cheaper than Panama.) Bigger cities, more danger, but way more resources. Super popular retirement destination, not exotic in that sense. Also a standard short list destination.
If you are considering that list, the obvious miss is Guatemala. You should be considering that as well. In that group Panama is the outlier as being much, much smaller and way, way more expensive. All the rest are in a relatively similar cost of living / economic scenario and all are larger without one city totally dominating their identity. So Panama will feel quite unique in that lineup.

I think you should rent a room and go stay with a family in Managua for a few days 😁.
