Thank you for your story. My Father Sailed on the Kilmallie by way of Cape Horn quite a few times when he was 18 or 19 years I recall the stories he told me when I was young. He passed when I was14. Fortunately I have photos that he took during his sailing days they are very spectacular when I think of it.
Why in cripes sake any commercial ship would go around the horn in 1948 instead of through the Panama Canal is beyond me. I don't care how cheap the ship owners are - it just makes no sense.
Maurice is such an understated but fascinating talker of his experience in, essentially, circumnavigating the world in a tall ship in 1948. Must be one of the last commercial square rigged ship voyages. Googled, Palmir was the last commercial sailing ship to round Cape Horn in 1949. Good wor Garry in documenting these oral histories.

On blood pancakes, we still have them in the Nordic countries and any kid, also Australian, would eat them happily, good and nutritious. Problems related to food come later and I suppose I will not ask for sheep brains to eat or testicles although they are apparently also delicious. And regarding "testicles" you have to read Zorba the Greek unless you haven't. "Blodplättar (in Swedish; blodpannekaker in Norwegian, veriohukainen, verilätty or verilettu in Finnish; verikäkk in Estonian), or blood pancakes in English are a dish served in Finland, Estonia, Sweden and Norway made of whipped blood (typically reindeer blood), water or pilsner, flour and eggs.[1] It is similar to black pudding, but is thinner and crispier.[2] Blodplättar may be fried in a frying pan. Passat, Pommern, Peking and Pamir. Flying P-Liners. Handsome square riggers. Museum ships: Pommern is in Finland, Mariehamn and Germany Passat in Travemünde. Peking recently restored, today anchored on the river Elbe, Hamburg.
Outstanding interview and pictures. Thanks, Johannes Lindgren a Square-rigger, Cap Horner romantic, who once sailed ‘before the mast’ on a 4-masted schooner with auxiliary engine. It was the 60s and we were loading timber, planks from Kotka, Finland to Horsens in Denmark.
Fascinating stuff. Maurice will undoubtedly have known his ship PASSAT had been preserved. I wonder if he ever got the opportunity to revisit her?
