I reluctantly pulled about ten plants yesterday and this video confirms that it was the right move. Stunted growth. Curly leaves. No blossoms. And spreading. Extended early rains. And a fairly large presence of the leaf hopper bug which I had no clue was capable of spreading this virus. I still have a separate area of tomato plants that are doing well, so I am still hopeful. Thanks for the knowledge.

My wife feels relief after watching your video. She has 15 tomato seedlings in red cups (per your planting style), waiting for our nighttime temps to get warm enough for planting. Some of the tomatoes have leaf curl, and I'm sure now it's due to wind and our arid climate. Thanks so much for your help with this Brian!

My curly leaf is at the top only, and it curls under. A week or so ago, we had a hail and strong wind storm, and it damaged a lot of leaves... before that they were healthy and proud. Overnight I saw holes and stress in the larger lower leaves, and they are browning around the edges of the holes. Shortly after, I got curly top on the one plant. I had been spraying with neem oil weeks before it happened. Well, I moved all my plants in buckets further under the pergola and seperated them more. Shade cloth is going up before it hits 90, and it's going up to high 90's today. Thanks for all the timely info!
Glad you are feeling better. Beach sand and sunshine and sound of the surf, all great therapy!

Thanks Brian. You have just taken a load off my mind with your explanation of the causes of leaf roll. I had so much last year with thick stems and leathery leaves, I was sure the plant would die, however it didn’t effect production. Can’t wait for tomato season again here in Australia. I’m going to concentrate on making chunky salsa this time as my larder is full of last seasons sauce and paste.

I watched your youtube a couple months ago and combined your idea (stringing my tomatoes up) with a 20 gallon wicking tub (Leon from OK--it waters the plants from the bottom up and give oxygen & water to the plants roots as the water is wicked up to the roots). It was going beautifully until it wasn't! I first noticed end rot. I used tums ground up and added to the plant and that took care of the problem but right after that I think I ended up with possibly "blight" (all the leaves on the bottoms of the plants-then all of them were brown and "crunchy") but the blight really couldn't be stopped. I started a brand new wicking tub but left the old one "growing" because it had a bunch of tomatoes on it but they are only ripening one tomato at a time and not very sweet. I watched this video because one of the 3 tomato plants in my NEW wicking tub had some curling leaves. It has been pretty warm here in CA (end of Aug) so I think I am going to be ok according to this video..so thanks for that!.
But I am so discouraged with trying to grow tomatoes. I'm so afraid something is going to get these new tomatoes too! I guess I should take down the first tub of tomatoes as they are not really growing and the tomatoes are ripening so slowly and not tasty really. The tubs are about 12 feet from each other. I am writing this in hopes those who read this might have some suggestions or encouragements as I really am frustrated and just want to have good tasting tomatoes!! Thanks in advance!

Brain, just got my toms planted in pots 6/01. We are suffering from 85 - 90 days lately. I've covered the patch with shade and that helps the poor babies from wilting. I mixed up a good nutritional soil mix this year and I have babied the seedlings from the start. If we don't get a hail storm later this month I expect a decent crop here in zone 4a. Cheers, friend. I am growing tomatoes like you now, b/c of you. I made my posts by making teepees with wood, 8 feet tall wood, put in ground about 8 inches, and tied the three posts together with string to pull them towards the soil and provide a more secure post. I connected two posts with another 8 foot piece of wood. (I’m using roller hooks, though.).

Great video. In Florida, the TYLC is normally spread by White Fly. It’s the worst. The only solution I found was growing resistant varieties like Big Beef and of course controlling the flies. Extreme pruning helps keep fly populations down too.

My daughter is a young and new veggie gardener and last summer had several tomato plants with thick leathery upward curling leaves. The plants grew and produced sparsely, but the leaves remained curled most all of the St. Louis summer . No browning or yellowing found. At first we were concerned that perhaps some nearby Bermuda grass (aughhhhh, can't stand that grass!!) that had been treated with Round UP, had wind drift of the chemical, but my hub said he was very careful of that issue. Most all of the leaves of the plants were upward curled along the edges only. From this video, I am thinking it was a watering issue. Missouri is known for its clay soil, and while we tried to work the soil, my guess is that it wasn't good enough. Thanks for an informative video (again) and we're looking forward to a better crop this summer 2021!!

Which are not doing it. The EG was kind of doing it a week ago when it was really hot. It’s also shorter than the other two and all were planted at the same time! I installed a shade cloth yesterday. I was waiting for this video. The patio tomato plant in a container has curled leaves and now I know why thanks to you: the past two super windy days and dry climate. Other than that, the plant is green, flowering, and quite happy under the shade tree with diffused light. The two tomato plants planted a week ago into the soil, are taking off and loving the partial shade of a nectarine tree. I'm finding that even citrus grows better in our semi desert climate, in partial shade. They don't like to get sunburned! Thank you, my kindred spirit.

It’s such a funny coincidence that you are just posting this video, because I’ve been working this past week on bringing my tomato’s back from herbicide exposure. I figured out through lots of research that the cow manure compost I bought and layered through all my containers and bed was contaminated with herbicide. So my friend’s mom, who runs a community greenhouse, told me to report them in fresh soil and compost, and to dig out around the top of the ones in the bed and full it back in with fresh compost and used worm castings at the base of the plant. So far it’s actually working and they are coming back! 😄 and since they are indeterminates, I left the top sucker just in case the top doesn’t come back I can at least grow a new lead.

I have a lot of experience with whiteflies growing in zone 10b of South Florida. If you are in the north, whiteflies are mostly harmless and isn't a big concern. In tropical region that is both hot and high humidity, which is around zone 10, they are pervasive. Whiteflies are active in the hotter months, no amount of spraying will stop their population at this time as long as they have a food source or habitat. The way to reduce their population is to not provide them with food source during the hotter months. Wait for the cooler season for them to leave before growing the plants they are attracted to. Whiteflies are primarily attracted to the nightshade family, so that includes tomato, pepper, regular potatoes, eggplants. Also morning glory, jasmine, black nightshade, goji berry, sweet potatoes, sage, water spinach. The main concern with whiteflies is that they carry tomato yellow leaf curl virus, which is incurable to the plants. Planting herbs companion will not prevent whiteflies, neither is any form of organic spray in this kind of environment. But it is still a good idea to spray below the leaves of whiteflies infested plants and prune them to allow more airflow.
For Zone 10 in Florida, by mid-April, I started cleaning up all my nightshade plants. I do not try to grow them into the the hotter months. I will start seeds for pepper and tomatoes in September or October indoor and won't bring them out until it's cool enough and most of the whiteflies are gone, like beginning of November. With Florida, problem with this is you can get wet and cold months late and early in the year and tomato plants get fungal diseases easily under wet and humid conditions, so it's a good idea to use organic biological fungicide on your tomato and pepper seedlings, and spray them with it every 2 weeks.
Now if you're in Zone 8 or 9 of Florida, then it gets cooler sooner and you can bring the tomato and pepper out earlier, like late September. So in effect, if you time it right, you can gets two tomato seasons; September to year end, and then New Year to April.

What the best way to keep tomatoes from drying out in pots and how often do you need to water.

You can add southern blight to the list. This is brown bumps appearing on the vine near the ground. Within 1 day the leaves curl and begin to droop. The next day the bumps have spread. It is a fungus and will spread. However I treated it like a scalp fungus and boiled about 2 tablespoons of dried oregano and 1 tablespoon of dried rosemary in 4 cups of water. I reduced the temperature to simmer for 10 minutes then let it cool. I strained it and put it in a spray bottle. I heavily sprayed all plants for 3 days. I put the boiled oregano and rosemary leaves at the bottom of the healthiest plants. The ones that looked better after 3 days of treatment I kept all others were pulled up and destroyed

I always bury my diseased plants amd grow the same crop in the same place the next time i plant. "Dis-Ease" in a plant is always due to either lack of minerals in the soil or lack of biological activity to make the minerals available to plants. It doesn't make sense to me to throw away all of the goodness in the soil and the plants just because some plants didn't make it to maturity. Those plants still contain nutrition for the next year's crop. Although "dis-ease" may appear to "spread" from plant to plant, I believe the "spread" is due to something lacking in the soil biology. Bury your mis-takes and work on increasing biological diversity in the soil is the alternative I suggest.

Excellent descriptions as usual. I was just about to yank out a tomato plant that exhibits the first example. This is 1 out of 7 that I planted at same time, same conditions - all the others look perfectly healthy and thriving. I was concerned about disease but now I'm comfortable waiting to see what happens. Maybe I just put too much fertilizer in the first one during planting. Thanks Brian!

Here it is a rare day between early May and late September that is less than 90 degrees F. Also our humidity is very high. I have found the F1 Juliet type tomatoes perfom very well.

One of my 4 tomato plants had leaf curls and decided to let it go last week 😞but now the one next to it looks like the leaves are starting to curl. I’m really hoping this is due to multiple high winds we had. It will be more sad if this is viral, but hope to harvest something then I’d be happy. Thanks for this video- lots of great information.

Funny, I’m a new subscriber and happen to watch @CaliKim’s video on her book release and you were in attendance! You both have great channels.

I have been wondering, pulling my hair out, and researching a lot as to why my tomatoes are dying, or look like they are dying? This is my first year growing vegetables and because of space restrictions I planted in containers (pots). After seeing this video I’m 99% sure my soil in the pots is getting to hot from sitting on my cement patio and front steps. This area gets sun all day, (8-10 hrs+). I figured this was the best place but now I’m learning different? My peas are kinda dying or look like they are dying anyway, at the bottom there yellow and green at the top, so things seem to make sense as to what you are teaching here. Thank You and if I’m missing something else please feel free to let me know!

It’s rare I learn something new about tomatoes but I just did. I didn’t know about the lead hoppers and white fly. I will be adding a neam schedule now. I was wondering what that was infecting my tomatoes and assumed humidity but it has all the signs of the virus issues you posted. I grow year round so always new plants to play with. Thanks!

Thank you Brian this was very helpful first year in many years I’m growing three tomato plants. The San Marzano plant has some beautiful fruit but now the top of the plant has very small curly leaves not fully grown. I think it must be infected. I don’t see any bugs. At first I thought it needed more water. I tested the soil. It seems fine. Not sure what to do?

Hi! Thanks a lot for this video. It is very informative and I will be checking all of my tomato plants and keeping in mind all of the things you mentioned.
I grow all of my tomatoes in containers and I read somewhere that marigolds can help deter white flies from tomatoes. I think it works! I have not seen or had any white flies on my tomatoes this year! The previous year when I did not plant any marigolds, there were white flies everywhere! However, snails seem to absolutely love eating away at the leaves of the marigolds.

Thank you big guy for your knowledge and sharing it, I've had some whitefly issues on our tomato plants right now and wasn't sure if the Neem oil was the answer or at least the right thing to do. Haven't lost anything as of yet and all plants are doing excellent but have noticed some of the white flies on some of the plants. So I guess I better go and get these plants sprayed! No need to worry about getting back to me I know you're very busy I just wanted to let you know I appreciate you sharing all that you've learned. My family thinks I'm smart now, LOL!

Thank you. Initially searched for help as to why my baby seedlings/starts were getting leaf curl. I think they were too close to the grow lights. Once they are planted out in the garden ( I started too soon for 8b) how often do you spray your vegetable plants with neem oil? Great channel! Happy I happened upon it during my search.

If you have problems with nightshades and legumes specifically, it could be from aminopyralid herbicide residue in your soil or compost. Did you purchase any garden soil, compost, or straw to mulch with?
I just posted a video showing this type of damage on my gardens if you want to compare the effects of this herbicide to your plants.

Caroline Hamm thank you! I took over a garden plot from another gardener and think the soil was fine. But I did bring in a bail of straw for mulch. I think that may be my culprit. I’m going to go over and take a closer look today. I appreciate your video and tagging me. 💕
