So from what i gathered you play as the "Shield" Vassal of Joshua the son of the arch duke and holder to the Eikon Phoenix. At some point Joshua is attacked by someone and they turn into Ifrit, this is acknowledged by the guard who says "it's like a second Eikon of fire which is impossible" implying that there should only by one Eikon per element probably tying to each kingdom's mother crystal. Ifrit kills phoenix / Joshua causing the hero to vow vengeance upon the killer. At the end we see the hero as a young man and then older, this face to face cut was done to show they are the same person, same hair and eye colour along with same face shape and the same earring. That being said the Hero seems to become a mercenary on a revenge quest. The hero also seems to have lost his fire powers at they tied to his connection to joshua who seems to be no more. When he is shown older he fights using earth powers the giant fists and wind powers the giant green claws, most likely relating to the Eikons Titan and Garuda. That's all i got so far. Thank you for reading my ted talk.

Joshua actually turns into Ifrit though. It looks like the MC is Phoenix. On the title art, it's also Phoenix and Ifrit, so I assume these characters are pivotal protag/antag. And his older version also still uses Phoenix's wings as well as Garuda and Titan.
Yeah, what Jay said. It appears as though Joshua becomes Ifrit. The MC's fire power is the shape of a wing so that sounds more like he has Phoenix and can switch between the eikons potentially since later he uses earth fists and those claws.
@@albinobob14 idk, watching it i felt like the kid was Ifrit, and possibly went on a rampage (maybe even killing someone important to the MC). Now you older and found some clue of his location, and is looking for revenge. But then again, i'm probably wrong, and your idea makes a lot of sense
Edit: Actually re-watching it it does look like Joshua is Phoenix. But he MC does an attack with kind of a fire wing in one shot, so maybe the kid died and passed it to you. Either way, Ifrit is likely main villain and game looks dope
joshua seems to give him a mark with the phoenix which would make sense since after joshua is gone he cant use the phoenix wing attack ala king regis and the kingsglaive in xv. seems the main character resorts to using other summons. also at the beginning of the trailer they mention a girl which considering they are fighting viking enemies might be the user of shiva. leads me to believe each summon has a host. also i think joshua becomes the phoenix and the invading troops use ifrit hence the main character going after revenge in the time skip although he has an accent in the future so it may or may not be him
edit: just rewatched it and they clearly say to ifrit "hey joshua wake up"

The summons / Icons / Aeons / whatevertheyarecalledthistime really look like direct adaptations of some of Yoshitaka Amanos artworks (especially the Titan and Ifrit looking fellas). Love it.

I think the summons here serves as weapons as well or skill like what FOLKLORE a jrpg on ps3 used its monsters then might used the summon bar on FF7 for ultimate attack ..

Absolutely no one could have been more deserving of tackling this title than the XIV devs. And they don't say it, but I'm pretty certain that's some Soken music - I literally COULD NOT be happier about this!
I mean the Ff14 devs are brilliant, I said it before they need to make there own single player final fantasy game and now they are!! There stories are brilliant heavensward is my favorite so far I haven't played stormblood and shadowbringers but I will I just bought the complete edition of Ff14 and yesterday I finished heavensward on the free trail now I am heading to Stromblood

@@john_7000 Unlike the other expacs have their ups and downs moments, like SB starts off not very strong but ends on a high note, ShB is a full package. It's so good from the very first msq to the very last.
It explains why there's no content in FFXIV and Shadowbringers feels kind of like a budget expansion all in all.

That was the first thing I noticed! My initial thoughts were “Oh this is final fantasy Final Fantasy
Seems this "back to basics" approach is happening a decent bit with some franchises. Zelda went back to the more non-linear progression design of Zelda 1 with Breath of the Wild, Resident Evil VII took the series back to a "creepy mansion" setting where the craziness is more of a slow escalation (big change up after the Micheal Bay type of opening RE6 had), Mario Odyssey was an open ended 3D collectathon like Mario 64 and Sunshine (but with Banjo-Kazooie's style of collecting, meaning you don't get kicked out of a level with every main collectible you get), and now Final Fantasy's going back to the medieval fantasy setting for the first time since FF9 released two decades ago.

Nah man. For me medieval fantasy with some magitech sci fi is true FF feeling. The futuristic hybrid type FF was a lightning in a bottle moment with FFVII that is very hard to replicate.

This might be the best single player FF, I'm saying this rn. FF14 has some of the best, if not the best plot in an MMORPG, the fact that these guys are contributing to FF16 is BIG.

A high fantasy FF game with a more grounded setting and characters, a darker tone, isn't afraid to have more violent and visural moments in it's story and has the DMC5 gameplay director working on it? Take my money now Square!

@Graeme Vaughey you cant go super crazy in this medival crystal era thing. Most crazy would be a character like steiner or quinoa. Thats also why i hoped 16 would be in a "new" universe like 7, 8 and 10 were and then you can go crazy with characters. Or at least in a xell dincht way. I love xell.

FF has a huge tradition of handsome men at the helm all the way back to the earliest ones with Amano's gorgeous artwork up to Meteor and Noctis. But with that mix of anime bishounen and grizzled western fantasy influence on this guy, yeah he might be the best yet.

Yep. At first glance I thought these were two different characters playable at different points in the game but it's clear now they're the same person, just aged with a slightly more mature face, disheveled hair and gruffer voice. Very interesting. Seems like they're going for a fully character action type of game with this ala DMC and Bayonetta. Just you versus all the enemies. I'm down for it. This could be absolutely fantastic if they play all their cards right.

My prediction is the young protagonist is in the first few hours of the game, introduce the characters and build the world, relatively peaceful time but show tension is build between whatever groups like we see in the trailer, then everything goes to you know what like we see in the trailer with their home being attacked and destroyed, then we get hit with "we've been at war for 10 years" or whatever, and the rest of the game is spent as the older protagonist

I'm really digging this. The art style is pretty good, and there seems to be a heavy emphasis on summons.
form the trailer it looks like you turn into the summon or become part of them. which would be a interesting summon system.
The people behind FFXIV and DMC5 coming together to make FFXVI sounds like a fever dream and I'm ALL FOR IT.
Don’t get me wrong I like the combination of Sci-Fi plus magic in this series because it is cool as hell but it’s such a fresh breath of air that we are returning to more of an actual old time fantasy setting

Don't worry, if this is anything like Classic FF (which it definitely seems like it will be) then we'll get the sci-fi/magitech stuff towards the later half or more towards the end of the game.
Back then (around 1 - 9) if the entire game wasn't magitech based (or just flat out modern-esque) already then that stuff typically showed up after the 50% mark give or take. (If we're not counting airships and what not towards the whole magitech thing)

I really feel like FFTactics vibes from the story. Looks like there are these crystals that can maybe turn you into the summons, like what happens with the kid being enveloped in fire at the end. Each kingdom has some crystals stockpiled, which has shaped the power dynamic in the world. Nations are warring, and occasionally use the power of the crystal to bring out their "icons" (i.e. get people to become summons). But only a handful of people have the capacity to speak to the crystals.
All of that is straight out of FFT from the Saint Ajora days. The Zodiac stones turned people into monsters which single-handedly shaped the politics of the day. The monsters are a bit different in FFT but similar idea. I agree there could be some connections between Ivalice and FF16.
The combat looks interesting though. Looks like a focus on dodging, possibly with Dark Souls inspiration? Definitely different to the hybrid system of FF7R. Has potential, but I do worry it could be button mashy. Though maybe that's just hotkeys for commands, as in FF14. Overall, I'm super hyped though. I expect 2022 release maybe? Or... yknow... 2030 since it's an FF game?

First part sounds boring. Hope thats not the case for 16. Kinda hope theyre their own special gifted race because their marks on their chin. That whole crytal era thing is super boring to me too. Personally the worst ffs for me were tactics, 9, and 12 .. yes because of that
as a XIV player, this story is straight out of the book of XIV. People being used as vessels to summon Primals / Eidolons, etc. is a huge story thread in XIV.
Which of course makes sense, it's being developed by Yoshi-P and the XIV team.

Well, not gonna pretend I'm extremely knowledgeable about FF games beyond VI and VII, but it seems to me like the protag, I think they called him Joshua, has some sort of forced bond with Phoenix like Naruto has with Kurama. And judging by the logo art, this game's gonna be about a massive clash between Phoenix and Ifrit. Either that was a big event in the past a la Xenoblade Chronicles, or it was a big event in the past and we're about to see the rematch of the goddamn century.

This game looks so dope. And Yoshi-P being the producer is extremely good news. Makes me hopeful they'll finally have decent development cycle without too many issues. The fact that we have already seen gameplay in the first trailer seems promising as well. And then that fucking capcom dude that worked on dragon's dogma's and DMC5's gameplay being the battle director. I have high hopes for this. Going back to a medieval fantasy setting is also a very big breath of fresh air to me. Especially with FF7R being like a long running thing. And holy shit, finally getting to see a new face for the series after years of Noctis, Lightning and Cloud is also really refreshing. I love Cloud as much as the next guy, Lightning and Noctis not so much, but we have been seeing these 3 for years. It's so weird that singleplayer mainline final fantasy hasn't had a fresh concept since like 2006, but here we are.

@@edgaruriarte With FF7 being my favourite game of all time, I have to say that is without a doubt, still my favourite. But I will say, having finally played FF9 for the first time, that story and world is just so charming. Especially Vivi, bless that little war machine.
I'm currently up to starting 12 and I'm actually interested in replaying 13 to see if it really is as bad as I remember.
And you'll love the Remake, it really is a treat for all Final Fantasy fans!

Just pulled through with Vivi being my last party member alive, and he was enraged too! Thankfully the final boss has essentially two attacks, and because one of my rings absorbed the damage of one, he would lower his health down to 1 and then heal it right back to full with the next attack, the moment enrage ran out, I just threw one last spell at him and he died.. never have I been so close to a panic attack!
Not using the chocobos "Kweh!" sound as censor. Missed opportunity.

Hell yeah im fucking excited for Final Fantasy XVI. More than any other mainline Final Fantasy or remake that could come out, that isn't more of Final Fantasy XIV.
I am so hyped and I can't wait to see more. I was already getting a PS5, but this solidified the console I'm going for in the next gen.

So glad it's in a medieval setting again and not modern/futuristic like 13 and 15 was. I was getting sick of it and I missed my FANTASY elements.

Looking back, it's amazing how so much of this trailer is JUST from the demo/intro portion of the game. It gave so little away while completely setting the basic stage and hyping you up for the game.
Can't wait for the game! You were right on about FFXVI revealing on this showcase and spotted it right at the beginning of the trailer.

I have not cared about a Final Fantasy game in a long time. This immediately got my interest and I am beyond excited to learn more.
I love it..day 1 buy.. but I did love the FF7 Remake personally.
Did you play final fantasy in the nineties or early 2000s. I feel like the story is so nineties and I love it. Reminds me of D&D games I played from late nineties and on...and love the D&D games from that era.

@@ML-yn9yu Biggest disappointment is how much potential it had to be something amazing. When you look at the older trailers for it, when you see what the story could've been instead of the mess it turned out to be. That is the worst travesty of them all. Hell, even the movie that came out just before the game, showed an interesting world that the game just couldn't deliver on. It's too late for them to go back now, but I hope one day at least we get the FFXV that was promised to us.

Apparently from the trailer prior to this - "Project Etika" was running on their in-house Luminous Engine, so I am wondering if it's that or Unreal Engine V...
Wait, they're still using the Luminous Engine? I thought they gave up on that after FFVIIR were rebuilt in Unreal 4.
This is done by the ff14 team so its likely using that engine, not ue4 like ff7r or lumious

You should get into final fantasy, magical games. All of them in their own unique way
Final Fantasy 8, 9 and 10 are quite unique and also the best entries for first timers. Most of the generation Y got to know FF series thru PS1 era, fortunately the older series are all available at Steam with remastered HD.

I interpreted what he said as a desire to end the influence of Primals. But it could mean something bigger.

Most of them got 3D remakes for the Nintendo handhelds, with 3 and 4 ported to Steam. Nothing as shiny as the new stuff, but it exists.
I would love to see the Kingdom of Baron or Imperial capitol Vector or any of these older sprite games fully remade in ffxiv assets.
I would want them to leave the story alone though, none of this “alternate dimension/timeline BS”

I like turn based combat but I've grown to appreciate the action combat since 15. There were a few moments in 15 where I was completely sold on action combat going forward in the future. I think it was when I was fighting the dragoon chick and I warped up into the sky and started fighting her up there like I was a DBZ character or something. It felt like something out of a cinematic. I have few memories that really stick with me with games now a days but that one has.
True, even if the combat is clunky and bad but the animation of the combat is fucking amazing reason why Max liked it even though the combat is clunky

My first impression was that the young dude and old dude were separate characters who had conflicting goals but I think Max might be right - they might be the same character. Now I'm thinking that after the young child, Joshua, goes berserk and turns into an unstoppable Ifrit monster, the main character has to go from being Joshua's protector into Joshua's enemy.

@@theULTIMATETetris Exactly what I thought. I'm gonna guess like first 20% or so of game where you get acclimated the event happens you lose the phoenix powers cus Joshua is dead. Then you are older in that merc band and get titans powers from that event.

For everyone worried about party, look at 8:36. There appears to be another person in combat with some other monsters. Also, the lack of HUD makes me think they didn't want to give up any clues yet from names, etc. So I'm pretty sure there will still be a party.

This game has me beyond hype. I wasn't sure on the combat at first, but hearing it's in good hands and watching through it several times now it's looking more and more impressive. Definitely hope to see more party members come along at some point, but what's there already with the main dude (or dudes if they're not the same guy) is a great start.
Personally if FFXVI Comrades was something they plan to do I hope it's not even considered until everything else for the main game has fully finished up development.

Highly doubt it's set in XIV's world, but we'll definitely see a collaboration event between the two games.
@@ZestTheHero Theres a big theory that's been going around after this that does look like one of the shards, it has some connections to the current lore about the calamities I think.
It'd be cool if they reveal it's set in one of the shards tho there seems to be no Lalas, Elezen, etc. Unless all of the races are still split off like how they used to in the Source. For example, the Miqo'te got to Eorzea through a land bridge but before that Eorzea had none. Maybe the game here focuses on this shard's Human lands.
I'd be completely fine with it being its own thing though. Collaboration event is 100% assured tho.

Also DMCV combat director and Heavensward writers have me positive for this game even if the visuals aren’t immediately grabbing me
I love FFXIV and how it represents the series, but even if I didn't I would still have to respect Yoshi-P and the whole team for setting solid goals, executing a plan, and getting shit done and solid game content out the door, consistently, for YEARS. I have every confidence they are going to make a quality game, and not take 10+ years to poop out an unfinished shell of a game. And even from just this brief trailer, you can tell the story will be grounded in actual human drama and not superficial metaphysics and FABULA NOVELLA EXTEMPORANIA VAPORUM CUP NOODLE.
Ffxv was a disaster? Maybe you need to stop reading reviews and follow the numbers lol
@@thenincompoopscoop6229 I feel they mean more in terms of development hell than sales and the likes. My biggest hope is they keep it on a solid schedule and release a full product without it lingering for years and years, and that has been an immense strength of the FFXIV team under Yoshida.
I enjoyed FFXV, but I also wasn't waiting on it since it was originally announced as FFXIII-Versus!

The 2 characters that appear at the end are the same person at different times. (it is the young version and the older version of the protagonist)
The protagonist's name has not yet been revealed, but he calls himself Joshua's shield.
Joshua must be the name of the boy who appears to become Ifrit. The protagonist becomes the phoenix.
i think they are diff characters. The first dude has wings/phoenix attacks, while the other has i think Ifrit arm smash.

As to the two dudes.. I really got the impression of a younger and older version of the same character, ESPECIALLY with that voice over. It starting with the younger version making the oath and then the older character with the choices they have made to try and reach a position where they can fulfill that oath.
Considering how "shiny" and "reflective" the trailer is, I can hear Sony scream "EITHER YOU BUY OUR PS5 OR BUY RTX 3080, IT'S YOUR CHOICE!!"
