As a long-time hitting coach of a number of professional players and having worked with lots of top juniors at both Hopman Academy and IMG Academy as well, I can rightfully say that Tomaz truly knows his science when it comes to building a tennis game. I can barely get through a minute of other “coaching” videos and I always finish Tomaz’s videos. He knows his stuff...

Never thought about this - but you are totally right, Tomaz. Hitting into the net does feel worse and you have well explained why - really cool. A related story: during Covid the courts were closed, I hit w a friend on a concrete kickball court, we used PVC pipes and strong twine for a “net”, so the ball would scoot under. I remember hitting really well that day - maybe the extra feedback played a role.

Yes, if you can cover the whole net with some kind of sheet or other material so that you can't see through, it helps immediately with better awareness of the height.

another gem! ...and I envision the net as a opaque brick wall ... 'cos being able to see thru the net ... subconsciously disappears it.

Height, direction, spin and speed all determine the result of the stroke. But what about depth? Isn't depth the result of the four former parameters rather than a basic parameter itself. To increase or decrease depth you need to adjust height speed and spin (and direction to a lesser extent). It seems to me that depth can be controlled only with these other parameters.

it's a result of the parameters but you still need to take it into consideration

Yes, but depth gives you feedback. So you need to pay attention to depth in order to adjust your next shot.

Great video-also by hitting in the net you do not give your opponent the opportunity to make a mistake!

Hi Tomaz, another great video! Thanks for sharing. I like the fact that you focus on the parameters vs a “reaction” to the shot. Of course it’s disappointing to hit a bad shot, but your deconstruction focus of the shot itself is great to pay attention to. My feedback on a shot hit at the net is that your racquet is obviously higher than the ball, thus the flight trajectory is downward. You need to bend the knees more to create lift on the ball. My two cents. Thanks!

    Hi Tomaz,
I really like this different way of thinking about the ball hitting the net. I haven't been analyzing my hitting according to all the parameters. With that said I think to avoid the net it is best to hit the ball higher. I suppose we have to be able to do both, hit low and high balls over the net in preparation for match play. In doubles we can hit higher over the net when playing inexperienced poachers and hitting down the line. Hit higher over the net in singles except when defending as the opponent could get the easier put away at the net. Do you think this makes sense?

Hi Dawn, the idea in the video of geared towards warming up, practicing and starting the match as you need to adjust your strokes every day to the conditions you face. It's better to hit long and work your way down with adjustments rather than hitting in the net. I am NOT saying that one should never aim low. So yes, in doubles or when going for passing shots you will need to keep the ball low and more hits in the net will happen. There is no escape from that...

@@feeltennis Thanks for the clarification! This approach is very significant. One that I wouldn’t have gleaned without you! Instructors have said hit high over the net but I watch the pros and see the variations. I wasn’t able to put it altogether and that’s the important part. You do that for us Tomaz!! 🤗

I hit into the net on SHORT balls. What do I do? I can never finish the point off.

Reduce your backswing and hit earlier

    • @feeltennis

Don't try to finish the point ever, always play to create pressure. Make sure you know the height above the net as you play those balls. Aim 2-3 feet above the net with nice arc and topspin and hit 9 out of 10 balls in. Report the results...

It sucks because I loose the point and sometimes the game, the set or the match.
