In this video I will show you how you can disassemble a BLDC Motor and in which manner you have to rewind its copper wires (motor phases) in order to lower the kV rating of the Motor. This way the motor features a lower maximum RPM and thus can be easier utilized as a generator. Along the way you will also learn a bit about the delta and star wiring of such a motor and their advantages.

You should use acetone for removing stator. Works well for me.

Hi,
Just spotted a slight mistake that might be relevant in future videos. 26 wires with a diameter of 0.2mm do not equate to a 5.2mm diameter wire. You need to multiply the cross section area, not the diameter. In this case, it would be the equivalent of a 1.02mm diameter wire.
@Robert Slackware Hey, why not platinum, or Rhubidium?... >
@Robert Slackware Here is an opportunity to triple down on stupid... Go for it... By the way, what your ignorance is talking about is NOT silver, it is in fact, MOSTLY copper, probably coated in silver to get the lower resistance of silver used via skin effects, but the hardness of copper as silver is TOO ductile a material to be used for much of anything.
@Robert Slackware Ah, you did triple down, excellent. That "silver" wire, I guarantee you is less than 50% silver if sold for electrical purposes. Silver is too soft and if used for windings, as you are talking about MUST have an insulating coating on it anyways. Pure silver would not help you any compared to partial. Probably less than 30% silver. And yes, it is Hella expensive.
@@w8stral Now you got me wondering why airplanes use Silver wiring. Off to google I go. I'm sure theres a Quora about this somewhere.
@@ChristopherJones16 Why silver plated wiring? Same reason people gold plate wiring, corrosion mostly. Also in Aerospace you silver plate your wiring and other surfaces as it effectively stops dendrite growth which causes short circuits AND gives skin effect dampening from EMP for space based sattelites though gold is used usually.

Interesting project, I used to make tiny motors for RC planes by rewinding the motors from old computer CD drives.
Apart from the tedium of actually winding them, the different results that were obtained by the number of turns on the windings, diameter of wire etc was quite interesting.

I rewound quite a few motors for my quadcopters. When removing stator you need to heat it, cooling motor base is fine, but sometimes there is adhesive which will give up with higher temperatures. Also threading is common, so you always need to twist it and not just pull. Avoid stator damage by wrapping it in some cloth, leather or just paper. You want to avoid any sharp edges on stator and layer separation. For anyone trying it, consider double lacquered wire, since its more resistant to damage when hand winding. If you need winding scheme for different slots and pole counts calculator on www.bavaria-direct.co.za/scheme/calculator/ can be really helpful. Also use some heat shrink on wires exiting motor. With vibrations motor base can "bite" through enamel and short your phase to metal base. That starts to be problem when you attach your motor to grounded metal frame or something. Simple trick for removing enamel from wire is to use pill of aspirin and melt it with wire. It smells, but its fast and I prefer it over sandpaper.
reseth great tips there! 👍
so liquid aspirin removes enamel? Makes you wonder what it does to our stomachs when the stomach acid melts the pill.

when switching fron delta to star config the output power remains constant
i was looking for this cooment hahaha because the power should remain constant
Oh good I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that. Star has higher voltage while delta has higher current. The product of volt and current in both configuration is the same.

Hi,
as you are always asking for ideas, Igot one that would be awesome. As a hobby I do some FPV Drone flying and for that purpose people are typically using simple sony hs1177 cameras that provide a simple analog PAL (or NTSC) signal. This signal now is transmitted analog on the 5.8GHz band (at 25mW). The downside here is, that with the analog signal a lot of noise is received too. For that purpose a very nice project would be to find a way of converting the analog signal to digital with error-correction and maybe decode it back on the receiver. The main problem here is that the latency has to be as low as possible. For that purpose I'd also suggest to not use of-the-shelf Video ADCs but rather encode the signal line-wise or bundle a few lines at a time. Else collecting a full frame will always introduce quite a bit of latency by itself.
And even if you think the above is a little too complicated to accomplish I am sure there would be very nice projects using the cheap fpv-equipment parts available.
I was thinking about this a lot after previous video. So glad you took on the project and made it happen! Really great video! Would love to see if you can reasonably use it in some way to generate power. Like could it be used as a windmill, or something like that?
We love your videos, but please don't hurt yourself when you ask us to stay creative and that you will see us next time :)

One word: compulsator.
I have a generator head from a old portable gas generator and my question is to you is can you wire up the generator head as a go cart motor? Instead of the gas engine turning the generator head and the generator head producing AC current, is it possible to introduce a DC current to the generator head so I can use it for a go kart motor?
You said you count the number of turns "per pole". These are not poles but slots. The number of poles, for such a motor, is determined by the number of N/S magnets on the rotor. The number of poles is always an even number (N and S). On the winded part, the name is slots, even if there are protuding parts. And the number of slots can be an odd number. A 8 poles, 9 slots motor for instance has a very smooth torque curve...
This is the best generator video ever seen
The best way for removal without using heat is to use a bearing puller with draw press. SImple fella.
what is the difference between using 1X 0.5mm and 26 X 0.2mm ?
Excellent video. I might share this with my students. It looks like you have created (3D printed) your own shaft coupler as well. Thanks again for your detailed demonstration.
10:16 configuring either wye to delta doesnt change the output power. As the current decrease the voltage increases by the same factor. Wye to delta only changes current or voltage that is needed for some application.
Thank @GreatScott for this informative content. I learn alot by you.
Thank once again
Mehdis name for the 6 diode FULL BRIDGE RECTIFIER ist better.
You didn't spin the rotor at 2.8kRPM or the coupler assembly would have disintegrated. So what was the actual input RPM? Very nice project btw!
You can get automobile or truck alternator rectifiers which are 3PH and Schottky very low drop, and current ratings from 40 to 250+ amps. Brushless motors can come in very large sizes, replace the bearings with Hybrid Ceramic to prevent current loss through the armature and eroding the bearings.
You didn't have to rewind, just put the 26 winfingx in series in stead of parallel... Or 13 pairs in series... Another good one is to separate the 3 phases rectify them via voltage doubler on to capacitor pairs and put the 3 in series...
Thank you for inspiring me. I will change my future nearer to your current path, may it be AC or DC. The next discussion should be about cheapest and effective alternative materials for all parts? Casting techniques will be the last step? The dialogue will be much more interesting. Kudos from Malaysia.

This proves Mr.Pascal (Greatscott) is actually reading our comments, so please don't hesitate to give him reasonable suggestions for new videos.
For me I was able to convert crap motors into generators by just replacing the permanent magnets with neodymium magnets since they are just crazy better.
10:21 in Y configuration the the end point voltage will be indeed sqrt(3)*fase_voltage, the current will be devided by sqrt(3). So the power will stay the same and not be lower like you mention in your video.
Interesting video, as always, but seeing you abuse the stator with the vise and pliers physically hurts

d=26x0.2mm =5.2mm is not correct on the paper around 6:03. Better would be to add the area and compute an "effective diameter"
A 3 phase brushless motor has the following values. The maximum current drawn from the battery is 4.62 amps.. The thrust is 4025 grams with a three-bladed fan 18 * 8.. The speed at the maximum lifting force is 2780 rpm. The battery voltage is 23.46 volts. How much is the output power? How much is the efficiency?
Hi GreatScott! Can you make a video where to explain the benefits of the brushless motor as a generator? I want to know the voltage and its power. Can this be used as a battery charger for example?( Off course with all the equipment needed)

Great!! This video and the previuos one are very good and usefull!! :) probabily can help me in future project. Just for curiosity: use BLDC (or stepper) motor as generator to provide DC will also decrease the efficency, because the output current (the currente that charge the capacitor) is only peaks and the bridge diode will no conduct for the overall period of the sinusoidal output voltage.

Could this generator be used on a bicycle to keep a battery charged while riding? The wheel spinning could turn the generator. What do you think?
You write Kv (the rating) as kV (abbreviation for kilovolt) multiple times! Please fix. Sorry electronics terminology sucks this much, but try not to confuse us more :)
You could have also used a buck converter to get the desired >1 volt output, and would have been the easiest of all three options.

5:05 - Big Clive says, brute force and ignorance will take you far.
Couldn't you replace the Sechspulsbrückenschaltung with an ESC, that has a hall sensor, knows where the rotor is and then activates the specific coils to let the current ggo backwards into the battery?
Or in other words, how do electric cars recouperate? With a 6PBS or a special ESC?
Oh damn @ 4:16
Another friend who walks the Sinistral path? #ONEOFUS!
Soon after the German word in 9:16, the BLDC went into hip hop dance with that 3d printed adapter 😂
You lost me with all the complex formulas. I can't understand that. What the hell is KV rating? KV means kilovolt. Just wind as many turns as possible on each pole. More turns equals more inductance therefore voltage per rotation.
What about trying to make a DIY 3 phase generator. Would love to see the result and what you could power. Looking forward to the video if you do it. Keep up the good work👍
This is a 3 phase generator...
How about building windmill with 220V output. What it requires. House-size wind turbine is not allowed :-) Off the grid !

Hello, what is th efficiency you got with this new wiring (new enameled wire, new number of turns, new star configuration)? In the last dc,bldc, stepping motor generator video it was very low
Opinions on using a BLDC motor as a dynamo on a bike?
I have a fast classic bike and want to give it a small lightweight dynamo with little drag and I wanna use a BLDC motor for that.
Can you make 2 side speaker using single coil
Bottom line he wasn't getting much power. Ceiling fan get much more and easy to do . I'm on my 4th one and have lit 25 watt 120 v lights with the wind. My latest one will double that

Plz use a mount. Jfc I love the knowledge but you have to give the motor a chance to succeed. You toasted the bearings. That specific motor is for an airplane so it needs a solid mount on the face of the output.
If this was used as a regular bldc motor would it have a higher torque? This would very cool and efficient way to not use a gearbox
