Thio is the real MVP for answering age old questions like "what the heck is a USB composite device anyway?" that we've all wondered about but never bothered to google in several decades of using computers.
word... usb comp device??.... ILL GIVE THEM a comp usb fkkn device
and I'm someone who always tries to google these sort of questions but yup, I still hadn't for some reason. Gotta remind myself there's probably 3rd party tools to handle almost any OS frustration, lol.
I'm surprised that no-one's pointed out that Device Manager already has a built in tree view that makes figuring things like this a lot easier.
Just go to "View"→"Devices by connection", and everything will be reorganized into the master top-down connection tree. It'll take a bit of poking around to find things at first, because you'll have to figure out which devices are using which connection interfaces, but once you get the hang of it, it makes a lot of sense, and you'll probably learn quite a bit about how your computer's put together in the process.
30 years windows has been out and device manager still needs to be enhanced with third party tools , don't worry though they updated the UI in 11 , so the task bar is centred , a change few cared about some hate
Lol 11 is garbage. They are simplifying things for dimwitted computer users, and when it comes to diagnosing problem? "Duh, d'oh! I dunno, try reinstalling Windows!" Will be the answer, because no one will know how to fix anything.
I think they changed the Fonts too
@@-COBRA i noticed that by putting rectify11 theme to windows 10
But nobody ever goes into device manager, only a few people who knows what they're doing so that's why Microsoft never made it better ;)
@@TriggerThat you underestimate gen Z
As always, Nir has blessed us with God-tier freeware. Amen.
I love explainer videos like this. To many tech channels spend all their time sucking off some expensive new product, while ones like this are actually useful.
Brilliant! I've been computing for decades, and 99% of this was totally a revelation to me. And yes, Device Manager is obnoxious when it comes to USB devices.
Please make more videos of this kind, I love to make things better in my pc for day to day work and your videos are a gold mine for me since not may videos cover such deep topics about windows day to day stuff, keep it up!!
Nice pfp man of culture
Great video, I had no Idea about any of this! Just a note for other people doing this: if you set a FriendlyName for a device, then plug it into a different port, Windows recognizes it as a new device and doesn't associate it with the other FriendlyName. Not a problem for keyboards and whatnot, but sucks for flashdrives.
That's why Windows should just use the UUID of the device. On my system I can read the UUID of any USB device then set it up in fstab to mount to a location of my choice and no matter which port I plug a drive into it'll auto-mount to the location of my choice. I can even set it up by the device name in /dev so I don't have to know its UUID and every flash drive will mount to say /mnt/flash. Though if you've got multiple ports, don't do that.
It seems like Windows can be pretty dumb when it comes to recognizing USB devices. I used to use an Xbox 360 wireless adapter so I could use a controller with certain games, and any time I had to unplug the thing, if I didn't plug it back into the same port I would have to reinstall the drivers. It was pretty annoying.
i especially notice it with usb sound cards - settings like sample rate get stuck to particular ports. It is kinda useful, actually.
I have been using USBDeview for years and it has been very helpful, especially in detaching stubborn USB devices which refuse to do so. It also has the ability to test the speed of your USB devices which is a cool added feature. Good stuff! 👍👍
You come up with the most arcane tools and techniques to make videos about, but I love them. I have tinkered with Windows for years and always love to climb into the weeds. Nirsoft and Sysinternals have some of the greatest, most useful tools imaginable. I appreciate your going into the nuts and bolts of how to use them, as I would never get through the details of so many marvelous utilities. And your videos are so well delivered and professionally made too. Thanks! Subscribed for sure.
This is brilliant. Almost none of the big tech reviewers cover this area. Great learning. Thanks Thio 👍🏻😁
First of all, thanks for all the great content shared!
Second, I followed your instructions, it is easier than it seems. Thanks to you I have no more "USB Composite Device" entries in the "Device Manager", so troubleshooting, if I ever need to, is going to be way easier...
You're amazing!!! This has helped me immensely in better understanding Device Manager, especially with respect to certain definitions.
Thank you for taking the time in making this video.
Extremely useful vid ThioJoe. Going to do this soon!
As soon as I saw the title and realized that it's possible to change the name I got so excited I had to click the video. Good stuff ❤️
Thumbs up! ❤Thanks to your other video on Nirsoft, I have USBDeview and USBLogView
Great video! It never crossed my mind that this could be possible!
I found it very useful. It's been a mess through the years figuring out usb stuff in the device manager.
Longer ThioJoe videos is ❤️
This is quite helpful. USB devices always give me trouble under Windows 10. Like, it used to be USB Mass Storage, and now Windows update turned it to Alcor USB 2.0 Card reader. Also, PCI Express Complex into PCi AMD 🤨🤨 I don't have AMD card, but I do know that AMD made the drivers for certain Intel CPU (i7-4770K Haswell in my case). I don't have iGPU enabled though, just running off HDMI on ASUS STRIX GTX960 NVidia. 😕
That's literally too useful, you're the God in explaining such difficult stuff, thank you x100
If you have (way too much) USB drives / thumbs drives / etc... the author of "USB Device Tree Viewer" also have a USB Drive Letter Manager.
I've been using it for years and is WAY better than dealing with random drive letter assignments each time you plug something.
I finally found out which USB port has problem thank to your video & the tool/software used in your video.
Love these types of videos, keep'em coming. Always very helpful.
Unique, amazing and really informative video. I didn't have half the idea about this! Thanks
Very interesting and geeky vid dude ; helpful and informal
Fantastic video Joe! I learned tons.
Honestly dude, thank you so much for this video. The device manager has always been super clunky and this video pretty much solves all my problems with it.
Clicked because of thumbnail then watched the whole video without skipped. Really liked the explanations.
This is THE MOST useful USB device video ever. I'd give it a million Likes if I could.
Hello, this video makes it way easier to identify USBs or other devices, thanks.
Very useful tools and info, definitely will refer back to for further reference on tools and how to. Thanks Joe for great info.
i did not know i really needed those information, until i saw this video,
new projekt for next weekends, identify all usb devices and rename them :D
This is a great tip that will definitely go in my toolbox!
A really helpful video. Thank you!
You're the best tech RUclipsr IMO.
I've learned a lot from your tips. Huge thanks.
Great info, i literally hate it when I have no idea which ones which
That is so cool. I have really struggled with this in the past. I basically need to unplug one USB at a time sometimes and that is harder then it sounds. I used usbdeview in the past but did not know about that reg part and the FriendlyName attribute and that external file for names. Thanks for sharing. I like this channel a lot because I work in IT and I don't even know half of these tricks...and they are just not tricks that never be used, they are useful in most everyday life.
i love the stock videos you use
This is very very useful ! It's sooo annoying trying to troubleshoot which USB hardware manager is looking at, especially with so many USB ports and devices
Really awesome set of tools. This could be very useful.
Thanks so much I always learn something from you
Awesome change name very useful
Great video!
very, Very, VERY useful
Informative and useful, thanks.
Very helpful information.
OMG, This video is so helpful!
Your channel is very useful! Thank you so much! Subscribed!!! Done!!!
Great Video! 👍
USB Device Tree Viewer is indispensable for making sure you're using the best connections for your devices. I didn't realize my phone was USB 3 because the cable I was using was USB2. Also helped me spread out my devices on different internal USB roots.
Love your videos. Learn a lot. Only things that bothers me are the "disclaimers" on every stock footage clip you use.
Very helpful, Thio. Thank you. Now, figure out the rest of the Device Manager! 🤣
your videos is the best ❤
Thank you so much
This is brilliant
Nice!
the stock videos make the video more funnier 😂
And creepy also 😁
really useful!
Thanks so much for this one. Any help with identifying which devices might have driver issues, or just identifying which portable drives are which without powering down, unplugging, powering back up is a big help. My computer has seven usb slots and 2 monitors connected with 4 on each one which are ALL in use. It can get very confusing when something's going wrong.
Hey thio I was wondering if you could make a video on how you make these awesome videos.
I mean how you select topics and how you do the research etc. It would be very helpful.🙂
I'd love for you to make a video about how you make a video. I like your editing style with highlighting squares, zoom-ins, and little red arrows.
Yes, I second this.
The stock videos are hilarious. 😂
Great to know, it helps a lot.
Is there a way to have more than one mouse at the same time, so all have their independant poiter, in other words each mouse actions does not affect to the others? Like a multí-touch but with multi-mouse.
Hey Joe, I believe you should make a video about Fluent Search. It is just up your alley.
I always hated Device Manager and never thought to look for a way to improve it for some reason lol. Thanks!
"Generic USB Hub". I mean, it's technically not wrong.
Cool!
Good video.
20-25 years ago this would have amazing as you always immediately ended up opening up device manager after a fresh install. Nowadays not very often do you ever have to bother with that nonsense nor do most people even know what is or why you might need it. But this is great for IT personnel whom might need some extra info when dealing with missing drivers, not sure who would really need to rename their devices though. Great info though, does Nirsoft software still get flagged by Windows security these days, I know it used to be an issue for many years.
thanks
4:07 It's not "with escalation", it's "with elevation".
Oh well
@@ThioJoe ey bud thanks for giving attention to your subscribers :D (heart this so i know you saw this)
Many thanks for the good work as always, and very useful.
But as we all know, after all this hard work from you, and then us putting in good use.
The problem is, when Microsoft releases a major update for Windows it wipes off all this kind of setting, even important things like restore point etc without us knowing.
So could you work on a tool that can restore and keep these settings after a major update for Windows. Many thanks again.
ooh good idea
Nice
Thanks!
Hope it was as helpful as I found it!
@@ThioJoe Haven't tried it yet to check if I have the issue but definitely love the fix.
Can we have a friendly discussion on the dynamics of language. I love little nuances like this .... I've always said reg edit and pronounced the g the same way it's pronounced in the word registery. So, redj edit. But thio glow used the correct pronunciation which is reg edit, like egg edit. The rule, as I understand it , has to do with consonants surrounding the letter G. But here's the real kicker ...... Chicago University has a lecture by a guy who describes in detail why rules of writing and so called rules of English aren't rules they're just guidelines
You have to be very wary of that sort of thing. What sort of good is language if there aren't rules in place to standardize it? In order to understand one another, we must have standards to fall back on or else we might as well communicate with grunts. To be frank, on its face the example you're talking about sounds like someone with a political agenda working to undermine the status quo.
It is established fact that language changes over time, and you can see this in reading documents from different time periods. The Bible does not read the same way as the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution, which do not read the same as the writings of Edgar Allen Poe or HP Lovecraft and all of these are very different from what you see today. Granted that these documents all serve different purposes and so would be written differently, but you can see differences in prose that can only be explained by the language having changed.
With all of that said, if you have someone with an agenda and the right backing, with time you can artificially change the public perception of the meaning of a word or phrase through subtle means. One such example is the word gay, which originally meant happy but now refers to homosexuality, and in particular of the male variety. What reason is there to think that the word gay would naturally change in such drastic fashion? I certainly can't think of one, but if someone wanted to change the public perception of homosexuality, would it not make sense to start associating that subject with happiness? This is made vastly easier today, where communication with people all over the world is instantaneous and not only that, but we now have perhaps a century or more's worth of compiled information on how the human psyche works at the individual level and at the group level. All of this research when brought together would make it far easier to artificially manipulate the common language than it was in times past. George Orwell's _1984_ touched on this subject, showcasing how "the party" was actively working to change the language from English to "Ingsoc" (an amalgamation of the words English and socialism) as a means of controlling the way that the population thinks. The reason behind this is that a person's language is tied very closely to how they see the world and how they think. In _1984_ the goal was to condense and restrict the language as much as possible in order to restrict how the people would think, thus eliminating the possibility of "thought crime", which is defined by the book as having any thoughts that contradict what Big Brother says. Probably the biggest and most well known example of this in the real world would be the concept of "politically correct" speech, with the term itself being a prime example of what Ingsoc looked like in the book. One of the rules of Ingsoc is that modifiers were extremely simplified. Something could be considered "good", but the highest example of good would not be excellent, but instead "double plus good". On the other side, there is no such thing as bad, only "ungood" or the worst being "double plus ungood".
Even without artificial interference though, there is another major factor that affects language, which is the concept of generational loss. Everything in this world is subject to cycles, and language is no exception. People are born, they grow, they get old and then they die; and all the same nations and cities are founded, and then rise in prosperity until eventually they begin to decay and crumble. I don't know my history all that well, but if I had to hazard a guess I would say that the English language here in the U.S probably reached its peak somewhere in between the year 1900 and 1950 and has been on the decline since then. You can see the proof of this in the way that people communicate online, where slang is far more common than proper words, and people will often use emoji's and short hand in place of actually spelling out what they think in detail. On top of this you see growing disdain for people that dare to correct the poor grammar and spelling of others, because the respect for the language is no longer there. You can even find instances where if someone uses "big words" they will be accused of being a show-off or just plain arrogant. This is in large part because it is easier to shame one person for going above and beyond than it is to make the effort to increase one's vocabulary in order to understand what the other person is saying. Generational loss is an effect of the second law of thermodynamics, which we call entropy. The idea is that the disorder of any given system will increase over time unless energy is put into that system to maintain its order, hence why your room will get messy over time if you don't clean it, or why your muscles will weaken over time if you don't exercise them. Even your mind requires effort to maintain, and you will become less sharp mentally if you don't put in the time and energy to keep it growing. Combine a naturally weakened language with active efforts to undermine and usurp it for political gain, and you have a recipe for disaster.
Thanks, Joe. This will be placed prominently in my HowTo folder. I am plagued with the "Device disconnected chime" issue. At intervals, I get a chime that would imply a USB device has disconnected. However, nothing seems amiss. Would USBLogView provide me with information about which device this was? Maybe it doesn't matter, but it's frustrating that I have no idea what device is continually flaking in some way. With the chime should come some identifying information. Thanks if you have suggestions.
This is a nice video. I have been using usbdeview and usb treeview for a few years now. They are good utilities. I haven't been able to figure out one thing though. How are thunderbolt devices treated? Is a thunderbolt monitor treated as a usb device? Will it be visible under any of these utilities? I actually have a thunderbolt dock which has given me few issues and now my system only recognises it as a usb dock, it does not register displays connected to it. My system recognises other docks with displays and the dock mentioned above works with other pcs and it worked when I reinstalled windows from scratch on my system but my pc stops recognising it after a certain thing I try ( can share details if you're interested) . But would love to see a video detailing how data is stored in registry for devices like monitors etc.
If you do not mind, could you do a video and speed comparison for write-caching on a disk vs this option being turned off, please?
what option?
Also, in the device manager you can view all the devices (not only USB) in tree mode.
100 likes oh yeah🎉
A similar video idea that would potentially be even more helpful: renaming audio devices.
I would love to be able to rename "Speakers (USB PnP Sound Device)", which is actually my headphone DAC, or rename "XB271HU (NVIDIA High Definition Audio)" to "Craptastic Monitor Speakers".
If your devices keep resetting on reboot you could type up reg entries in a batch script and have that script run once at start up.
Great
ThioJoe, thank you for the information about FriendlyName and USB device tools. I've noticed that the FriendlyName doesn't show in the Control Panel Devices and Printers, nor does it show in any device selection list (such as in OBS Studio). Does anyone know how to change the values shown in these two places?
is there any good way to backup those names to carry them over windows reinstall? will instances/device ids stay the same on new windows install/other PCs?
just curious, which g502 do you have? the wired or wireless one?
Would changing their names make any auto-updates for those renamed stuff to create duplicate updates for any of those renamed stuff?, or cause any un-updated stuff because they were renamed?.
Or cause errors in any regular scans of those renamed stuff?.
RegEdit is a concatenation of the truncated Registry and Edit. Reg would therefore be pronounced like Edge, and not like Egg.
You'll have a stroke if you put that word in Google Translate, select Portuguese, and listen.
Usb Hubs past 4 ports are internally chains of 4 port hubs, good to know because there is a rather shallow tree depth limit
thanks bro, i know its not your job, do you have a vid on How To get the f'n windows search for drivers thing to ACCEPT the newer/replacement driver? Nothin worse than finally tracking down a much more recent driver EX. my cellphone dated 2021, wont let me update from msft 2006 generic whatever usb driver. thanks!!
Chapter actually changing names at:
3:47
14:10 may be a good thing though. What if you can just rename the CustomName key to FriendlyName? That should work and make the job a bit easier, right?
joe, do you know anyway to change the category instead of auto dedicated one from windows? i windows 98, i remembered that it was easily done via new hardware or upgrade so that i had the choice to change it just by giving it another driver and Win98 accepted that...unfortunately after xp, you can only give driver correspond to what MS deems fit.
i have a ssd external usb drive that only recognize as a box instead of "external usb flash-storage" so it won't shown in many USB-HDD test as it's not recognizable there...i know there are instances that one could benefit from using other category device drivers as well and not just my problem
Oh yeah I love device manager. My graphics card is kinda wired so I have to disable then enable it. (Radeon)
If you have renamed a device accidently in UsbTreeView it can be rolled back by renaming it to an empty text, this deletes the CustomName registry value.
That it writes a unchanged name to the registry is bug of course, I'll fix that.
I'll play with the FriendlyName, maybe I'll use that instead of CustomName. But I think I tried that years ago and decided to use my own value for some reason I don't remember...
Can you make video about modern standby? It's a feature for notebooks
Are you trying to suggest that MS poorly designed something? ;). Thanks for the video!
