This is the best Aussie motorsport chat I've listened to in years. Maybe ever. So refreshing to hear people talk openly about issues. After all, as Aussies we all want to see healthy motorsport in this country. The powers to be with their foot on each driver's neck is just mind boggling.

Absolutely LOVED this podcast! You have said everything I have been thinking for the past 35 years or so. It took me back to the time when drivers DID have personalities and were allowed to show them, the days before every driver had a PR person, every team had their PR departments who controlled what everybody "said" and what was "released" to the media (ie everything was censored and re-worded). I had with a favourite F1 driver who was the most outspoken of his time. You either "loved" him or "hated" him, there was no middle ground. It was before the internet and F1 news was hard to come by in Australia, maybe a small article on the back page of the daily newspaper. I had to learn the Portuguese language and rely on friends in Brazil posting me magazines and newspaper articles so I could read about him. I was lucky enough to meet him in Adelaide and we became friends over the years. What I admired most about him, was he always spoke "his truth". I didn't always agree and sometimes it was hard for me to defend him when discussing his views with other race fans. But I always felt like I "knew" him, I "understood" him. This podcast, to me, has the same feel of honesty, so thank you for opening this conversation about what the fans really want and more specifically for reminding me what I loved about motor racing, before it became "vanilla".

Have to say Peter comes across a lot better in this format than he tends to on Facebook where he often sounds like someone just saying things for the sake of being controversial. Clear to see he's a guy that's just passionate about the sport & just wants it to be as good as it has the potential to be. Loving these podcasts Scott & Elliott, these are the kind of conversations that need to be had & Supercars need to take some notice of what's being said.

    G'day Scott,
    Just found this.
What an absolute ripper for me to watch first.
Ive been a supercar fan since the series went to this kind of formula in 1993.
But I agree with Peter Adderton its lost something over the past few years.
And love him or hate him The days when Tony Cochrane was running the show.
It really was a "show" and its popularity peaked. Drivers were able to show and say what they thought.
Who didnt froth about the Ingall / Skaife rivalry for example? That sort of thing polarised people. Now its actually kind of Meh 🤷‍♂️
Id have loved it if PA had been able to obtain the series.
That bloke is the promotional king.
Knows how to get peoples attention and get the most out of things.
Great Job, Im looking forward to seeing more of these.

I have always found it hard to critical of Peter as he has consistently put his money where his mouth is. Having said that I think that even though I fail to see what help his public lashing Supercars does, the way that Supercars has handled the Erebus fiasco has opened my eyes to the problems that are present. Peter has nothing to hide and is happy to talk through all his thoughts, Supercars are silent till the grave.
Thanks so much for doing this Scott. This is the most interesting Supercars discussion I have ever heard, please give us more.

Finally someone who says it like it is, couldn't have put it any better, Supercars should consider that fans are just as invested in the sport as the players, many over several decades, comments are often made out of sheer frustration with officials & drivers a like and often the criticisms are deserved all be it delivered with unjustified expression, man up and take it on the chin maybe even consider the message if not the manner in which it was written.

Peter, 100% spot on re the wokeness affecting Supercars on many levels. It is however just a reflection of our broader society in Australia that prohibits healthy challenge and debate of issues as these are disproportionately controlled by minority interests. Having lived and worked in 7 countries in my career, I can strongly attest that we live in the most woke environment in the world. This is to the detriment of sports like Supercars and our society in the broader context. We should actively support healthy debate that in the end contributes to better outcomes for sports such as Supercars and society in general. Keep punching Peter!!

    Great episode!
To me, it feels like SC is in a vicious circle. My thinking and understanding is that it's not financially viable to race regularly - so how to retain fan engagement and interest, let alone grow the sport to what it once was?
Because, if fans switch off or stop attending, how is it attractive for new sponsors to get involved and existing sponsors to stay onboard if it's simply not getting eyeballs on their brand?
Then, if sponsorship decreases, trying to cover event costs by increasing ticket prices or reducing expenses by minimal events only alienates fans further and you're back at the start of a downward spiral.
Very very complex problem with no hard & fast solution.

Peter hit the nail on the head re these space age roller skates and very fast toys.
Race fans want to see drivers dicing under brakes, overtaking and racing cars we can relate to.
The big surge in Australian motor racing came from Touring Cars, not Sports Sedans, Sports Cars or Formula 5000.
Every category has its interest plus die hard fans, but to be profitable it needs herd popularity.......nice popularity wont pay for the real estate needed, and forget about tyre, fuel, mechanics, parts costs......oh, and then car cost and driver wages.
My first motor race was 1966 at Calder......the Sports Sedans were the big attraction......Norm Beachey in the Chevy Nova, Peter Manton in the worlds fastest Mini Cooper S, Jimmy McKeon in the worlds fastest Lotus Cortina, Bob Jane in any one of his massive V8 powered cars from his stable, usually the 400+ cubic inch Camaro.......and then the arch villain, Allan Moffat in the Trans Am Mustang everyone wanted to own......dammit, most of the fans would sell their wife just to be allowed to touch that Mustang, put a fingerprint on it .
BUT.......the outdated English sports car races and the FJ Holden Race were both nearly as popular as the main race.
Then the big sports car race featuring a real Porsche Spyder with an enclosed roof stole the whole show.
But all this was only a small niche.......more parents and grown ups watched kiddies football and kiddies ballet than motor racing.
Until V8 touring cars we could all buy and drive racing at Bathurst......the flood gates opened and masses poured into support motor racing.
Then the idiot bean counters decided to fix the results in favour of imported rice burners we could not buy , and killed off the masses love affair .
F1 started with road cars racing long distance on dirt roads and drew big enthusiastic crowds.
Now they call it a race when only 20 very fast roller skates follow each other for a few laps behind a safety car.

Paul Morris and Russell Ingall went over it multiple times with many great cost saving ideas. I think the problem now is there's been so much money wasted on it that there's no going back.

I've followed the sport passionately since I first watched Bathurst in 1986. But I don't watch it anymore. I can't justify getting a Sky subscription to watch racing once a month and why should I? Nascar is on three now every weekend and it's not dominated by one team unlike Supercars.

    • @michaelcrane2475
      @michaelcrane2475 5 месяцев назад

I'll say it again, what's killing the sport is Fox and Sky sports. If I were a sponsor I'd be concerned that fans like me just don't watch anymore because we won't pay for a TV prescription. Especially when Nascar is free to view every weekend. When I got my first Mobile phone I got Vodafone because that's what was plastered all over my favourite driver's car. Back then the racing was on free TV and me and my mates all watched. Now I know nobody who watches Supercars because family etc comes before paying to get a Sky subscription.

Supercars or someone needs to get the Calder Park Thunderdome back up and running. race there twice a year as part of the championship. then they could bring over a few of the Nascar boys for some wildcard entries. that would be an epic marketing venture for supercars right there. you'd get instant hundreds of thousands more watching straight away.

Great job Scott 👍 can't believe I've just found this. It's probably because Supercars isn't on my radar as much as it used to be, and that's a problem right there. I've been watching Nascar for tne first time lately because of SVG, Brodie, Cam and Wil and can say a lot of the time you get more of the human element which translates into more entertainment. I reckon if you poled the punter on top of the mountain at Bathurst or the boys having a barby watching surface or Townsville they'd rather see Cam on the telecast saying Anton was an asshole for pushing him wide in turn one for example than hearing some tow the line comment like oh well that's racing. V8 Supercars seem to be loosing there entertainment value as a whole IMO 🤷‍♂️

this podcast is awesome it's the first episode i have seen but already love it. For me i understand what Peter was saying about Brodie but for me Brodie is a grown man who can make his own decicions and to dump you Peter and boost like he did he made his bed now he has to lie in it. It's his own fault.

Make supercars better? 1. Make it easier to watch. 2. Let them bang doors.

At Winton they used to have a fan interaction where they allowed fans on infield with cars set-up on old pitlane.. Guess now they are doing town to track as similar event...

I can watch/listen to this or Gypsy Tales podcast in its entirety because its real and unfiltered and then Supercars own commentators are so far passed their used by dates it makes the actual Supercars races virtually unbearable to watch. Skaife has always sucked and needs to give up, Nothing but respect for Crompo, Larko and Lowndes but why on earth would you want a bunch of old men to be the face of the sport.

Scotty any chance triple 8 can hook you up with red bull and get them to sponsor this pod! Or triple 8 want to have a chat about creating a dedicated app to behind the scenes of the team and feature the podcast or driver profiles (day in the life) like they do with their Tik Toks! I really do struggle with how this sport fails to push new or exciting content

To Peter's point about doing things differently; why not use the Brodie/Betty situation for good? He doesn't need a die-cut decal on a helmet to be a good ambassador for his brand. Sure, Peter claims he'll take Brodie's call going forward, but man... interesting call to excommunicate him.

I LOVE THIS TAKE ... on everything you guys have spoken about . I will agree and disagree with Peter on one thing . Not all social media is dedicated to BAD attitude. I dedicate a FB reviews page to doing the opposite . Positivite reviews. Granted hasn't gained traction because who gives a fuck what I think of things ... also the world thrives on hate and its toxic... anyway great podcast 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Example number 1 on personality is David Reynolds. Dave is 100% character. He is 100%, a great marketing person. He is like the Daniel Ricciardo of Supercars, but Supercars shut his mouth.
Dan says stuff with a smile on his face that in many cases is not F1 type speak. Dave says things that may not be politically correct, but everybody knows he is a genuine good human.
He is like a mute these days. Supercars have taken away his ability to create a persona.

Actually it may have been Dick Johnson who put Australians on the Nascar map in the 80s. He took Racecam over and while being interviewed he spun himself out and before they could react said Oh Fuck live on TV.
