I'm intrigued by some of the mechanics you highlighted in this video. The line system reminds me a bit of final fantasy 4, but on steroids. Speaking of FF, knowing that this game was developed by the creator of that series tells me it's in good hands!
While I'm STILL working my way through dragon quest 11s on the switch (yes, I know I'm slow!), I will definitely give this one a try!

Overall really awesome content, the only thing I had to disagree with is Pokémon’s battle system being pretty brainless. Like if you’re talking about strictly the campaign it’s pretty straight forward, but the competitive scene for that games adds an entire layer that most single player jrpgs cant do, of course you still have the same core system with type advantages but it’s gets way more focused on predicting what the other player is going to do.

Battle themes in JRPGs are extremely underrated in how vital they are. You are going to be hearing that tune for hours upon hours upon hours, it better be a banger, and Lost Odyssey with a god tier tune from Uematsu certainly delivers.

  • @WillieManga
    @WillieManga 4 года назад +1

I feel like more JRPGs need involving combat mechanics like this; ones that reward you for putting thought and skill into your attacks. I absolutely love the ring mechanic, the ability to grow your skills and switch them out and even mortals having advantages that immortals don't. As much as I love JRPGs, it's always nice when touches like these make them more engaging. Though it can sometimes be frustrating (especially the stealth mission which thankfully is short.) I can safely say this is a worthy spiritual successor to Final Fantasy.
Yeah. This is a pseudo Final Fantasy game due to the involvement of Hironobu Sakaguchi and Noubu Uematsu. Didn't see that one coming, did ya?

Sorry I'm late to the party. Thanks for the video. I'm currently going through missed old JRPGs having been hooked on Final Fantasy games from about the age of 10 (starting with FF7 - and yes, the eventual transition away from turn based combat still saddens me). I recently stumbled across Blue Dragon and thoroughly enjoyed that. More recently, another one I'd never heard of called Earthlock, which despite its imperfections was good.

Its really not that good. The story is shit, even if it has a great first disc. The combat is way less deep than he makes out and boils down to relentless menu visiting to give all immortals everything. Its also a pretty easy game. The 'skill gate' bosses is actually one boss, the first one. They plopped an end game tier difficult boss 5 minutes in. No wonder people thought it was unfairly difficult. Its literally exactly as insanely hard as the Matador fight in Shin Megami Tensei III, but where the tutorial boss in that game was rather than 4 dungeons in.

Best combat system in turn based rpgs?
Ok, SaGa frontier is my choice
Combos,Ability Sparks,Multiple races with different kinds of abilities and progression, a totally customizable System for characters builds and a complex enemy scalling system that makes even the "grindy" kind of players face trade-offs and think before fighting.

But for all my crybaby complaints it honselty was one of those jrpg's where the asethic of it-drew me in. Like even though I never finished it (cuss of how confusing it can be.) some of the tracks of Saga are really good especially t2G6 final boss theme (I think that's his name i believe.) Was really, really good. But i want to get into this game franchise but it just doesn't mesh with me.

Personally, I really enjoy turn-based combat, and not just because I have terrible reflexes so I have a higher skill cap than in realtime games. With that and how realtime games tend to rely on training yourself to read situations correctly and apply the right option, I find that I can get a bit deeper into turn based RPGs, and it's easier to find fun strategies without having to test every single thing that seems vaguely interesting. It also helps that you can always check the efficiency of what you're thinking about inside the battle itself, which helps me learn how to do things.
Also, I noticed that Cyber Sleuth footage in there. I like that game.

  • @JMrealgamer

Yeah I’m one of those weirdos too. Lol! What I’ve noticed about Lost Odyssey is it’s very slow and methodical. I don’t like FFXIII very much but I’m playing that as well, and I’ve noticed the battles are way more fluid in that than Lost Odyssey.
I just got done with Yakuza 7 and I guess you can say I’m feeling spoiled when playing LO. I wish we could speed it up a bit, the battles that is. The battles feel a bit like a chore in LO to me at least. I barely started it though. I just got to the Grand Staff camp. I didn’t think I was gonna make it! Lol! It felt like a struggle and I’ve been playing all sorts of RPG’s for years so I hear you brother. Awesome video man.

    Holy shit, I'm not alone.
I'm really picky with the majority of genres but my biggest problem with a lot of systems is feeling Basic, like I don't need to use Everything I have to win
So I end up being either incredibly bored early on.
Or I end up sucking a game's dick for hours. Such as the Etrian Odyssey games on top for me, some of my favorite RPGs ever made (every class feels specialized, lots of Party Build customization & any team of 5 classes can function, even the weirdest teams you can think of. And the difficulty, potency of ailments/binds/debuffs, all the skills that interplay, and at least in EO3 onwards almost never needing to grind, make that series one of my Go-To games. They spoil me)
& games like Digital Devil Saga behind those, with the interesting take on Buffs, press turns, ailments ain't as good but in normal fights can still be really useful, but a bit on the grindy side, with most party members feeling a bit same-y.
So I may end up really liking this game c:
Everything I've heard about it tells me this is more in line with what I want out of JRPGs

Another video that makes me really sad that Lost Odyssey hasn't being ported on PC xD But speaking of Battle systems, like... I get it... People don't want to spend every single battle by mashing the attack button or spamming autocrossbow every battle. But I think there should be a balance between having engaging tactical encounters with normal mobs and just trash mobs that you kill because they are on the way. Especially on a game like this which has random encounters, if every single battle becomes a chore of tactics that takes 5 minutes to beat, or feels like it takes 5 minutes, than the pacing becomes a glacier and no matter how much fun it is to invent tactics to kill everyone easily, if it feels like you're not getting anything done, than it doesn't really matter, there needs to be a sort of balance, let the game have some easy encounters just from exp, teach the player as much fundamentals as possible about how the meta works and then put mind into having challenging formations and bosses in particular points of the story just to give it more importance

Which one do you guys think I should play?
    (Preferably played both)

    Algorithm appeasement squad reporting!
...Also, I've been looking for an entryway to giving jrpgs a fair shake, and combat that's... Actually designed consciously, rather than by leaving an excel sheet open near an inquisitive cat does sound interesting.

As cool as this game's combat intricacies seem on paper, it also sounds like my worst nightmare in reality. I'd be swamped and overwhelmed and probably get completely stopped by the first "gatekeeper" boss. Me am the not smart enough for combat systems like this.

You probably are smart enough friendo. It's just about getting the effort/balance right. Much of that is down to the quality of the game I feel. Yet to play this one so can't comment yet. The colour palette (as trivial as that might sound) however, looks a bit dull.

I'm adding nothing to comments but just saying a generic "I liked the video" and its good to see one of my long time favorite creators upload something.

Turn based games are easier? They said? Have they heard about SMT:Nocturne?

Yup, Lost Odyssey and Final Fantasy XIII are the two games that really warmed me up to that flavor of challenging turn-based combat. Or maybe more accurately, they're the games that made me realize just how much more enjoyable they are when they do provide a challenge. As such, Lost Odyssey does indeed make me sexually excited, lol.
Can I just say though... the strategy guide for it is possibly one of the worst guides I've ever bought. I got it so I could clean up the optional achievements after I'd finished most of the game, and it was a terrible experience, purely because the guide can be so bad at times, lol.

I think one system that makes me enjoy a turn based system is unconventional spells and elements. Things that are more than "well it's weak to fire duh it's clearly the right play" and force strategy with unique abilities where there are choices to make not calculations.

Great. You completely sold me on a, from the looks of it, amazing game only for me to find out it doesn't have a PC port. Sadness. :(

I remember watching this video and first learning about this game and it got me so hype. I knew I was gonna love this game. Then I found it was a 360 exclusive. Fuck my life. Who even makes a jrpg exclusive to Xbox anyway? That's just a death sentence.

    I just started this.
I saw the beginning of your other video, realized I could get this on my One X console, and booted it up.
    It’s a lovely, crunchy, old-fashioned jrpg.
I don’t like jRPGs anything like as much as regular RPGs normally...
That said, the occasional, top-tier jRPG is a lovely treat. This one fits the bill.
    I’m trying to say thanks.

Lost Oddssey is not a hard game and is not that well designed. It has one really hard boss fight. The first one. The rest are painfully easy. The customization is tiny and the mechanics fall apart early on because you generally have a choice between everything or not everything. GC doesn't matter, you cant keep it breaking 4 turns into the fight and fighting a back row powerful enemy is counter productive. Ring buffs don't matter, there is always an obvious choice and you swap for enemies worth it. Skill inheritance doesn't matter you give every immortal everything. Stat balancing is pointless, everyone is outright dominant in their one style. You don't have team choice, you level up everyone then rely on immortals when you can because they are outright better.
And on easiness while shitting on Final Fantasy. FFX is slightly harder although more exploitable. The entire FFXIII trilogy are much harder.
It has some real strengths, like the dub is the literal best ever in JRPGs (outside the choice to use the Rugrats chick for the kids). The soundtrack is the *only* Nobou Uematsu soundtrack I think deserves notable praise. The story set up is unique even if it goes absolutely nowhere. Disc 1 short stories are incredibly well written.
Playing Persona 3 every time you mention bad game design, when ATLUS are probably some of the best designers at balance in the genre is insulting.

Honestly I just haven't enjoyed a turn based game since playing FF 7 24 years ago! I don't necessarily think they suck, they're just not for me. The only games I think suck are battle royal types and MMOs in general. God I hate them! No genre has hurt the industry's creativity more than those imbicile magnets!!!
