    Agreed. I own 4 UGQ's, 2 O's (under and top) and 2 20's (under and top). I also own other brands in the same and different ranges. When I know it's going to be cold down to the lower range of a quilt, I bring a UGQ every time - never been disappointed here in northern MN, where I camp year round in all kinds of conditions. Their 20 degree Zeppelin underquilt is my favorite of all time, what an absolute beast, had it down to 18 F with just one layer (merino long underwear only, plus hat and knit gloves) - I sleep a little on the warm side, but it would be easy to add a light fleece or down top layer and fleece pants - this UGQ is like a densely furry animal against the elements. They are a better value than any other brand I have, still a bit expensive, but well, well worth it - expect to wait a few weeks, unless you use their express option, which limits your choices, but gets it in your hands much faster. I like to pre-plan and get the custom for the exact features I like.

    Love my UGQ quilt! Got 800 fill 0 degree, took it down to 13 degrees in January, 22 degrees in February here in CT on my first 2 winter camping trips, and did fine! Opted for the open foot box.
    Just took it on an overnight on the A.T. near Bear Mountain in NY and used it as a flat quilt and it did great with temps in the high 40's.

    Wow, 300 bucks. I bought an extensive line of Snugpak products and used them singularly or in combo, e.g. hammock quilt with the jungle blanket or woobie for wintry nights. Works great for me. For those zero or below temps, my MSS, although bulky, is my choice. Your quilt looks awesome and the shock cord feature is a great idea. I support cottage or family businesses but most of their price lines aren't for the budget-conscious masses.

  • @jariperho
    @jariperho 7 лет назад +1

    I also love quilts, except in the winter. I've endured a few cold, sleepless nights in a quilt, because of drafts and just being uncomfortable, even though the quilt and pad were rated far beyond the temperature of those nights. A sleeping bag still has its place by providing a draft-free night. If you can make a quilt work in the severe cold, then more power to you. 👍🏻 I wouldn't say it's easy!

  • @norsefalconer

    You had me at "Made in the USA." Plus, keep in mind that not everyone is "avg" height, weight and build, and these can be up to 85" (216cm) long and 65" (165cm) wide, with a "no taper" option. Not many (any?) other outdoor options at those dimensions.

    Thats a sweet quilt man! Love the od green too! Coyote brown would be nice too! I just recently found out about UGQ and went to their website and they offer a ton of material options! I think thats pretty awesome! Their prym 1 camo is pretty sweet too very similar to kryptek camo. I want to see if they will make me a full zip. I totally understand the concept behind the partial zip but i've always preferred full zips also with a draw string foot box and head, best of both worlds in my opinion. I think their wait time is now only 2 to 3 weeks too. For now i will just keep using my sea to summit micro 2 down bag with 850+ european goose down "dry down" for spring, summer, fall. Awesome bag! But i want a custom UGQ bag for winter. Thanks for sharing and i hope you get years of good use with this bag! Hike on!

To be fair to zpacks they use 900 fill down compared to the 850 you have filmed... add the 900 fill option and it will be up there in price. I’m waiting for my locolibre gear quilt to come in... I opted for the outdoor ink forest floor pattern. Added $60 but will look like the forest floor printed on it...

      Not really. It kind of works, but if it's a mummy you have the hood in your face, which is inconvenient and a waste of weight. And the dimensions won't be quite right. Some suppliers like Zpacks, Feathered Friends and Enlightened Equipment offer hybrids that work as both, but personally I feel that you're better to go all in and get a pure quilt that's optimised for the job.

      It can still freeze in texas...good to have extra insulation, just in case. As far as the costco quilt, i just looked at one yesterday and they have dropped in quality. The shell is ridiculously thick/heavy, some of the baffles were practically empty, and all the (sewn through) intersections were completely absent of down. From what ive seen, their earlier models were consistently loftly...but, now, they're what you'd expect for $23.

    That's a beautiful piece of gear, Luke, but way too pricey for me. I still use my Snugpak quilt well into winter. When it gets too cold or a wet cold, I just add my Snugpak jungle blanket or woobie with the military poncho on top. This system works well down into the high teens. I'm no Shug or Luke if temps dip below zero so I'll either car camp or stay home.

    I use HG (Hammock Gear) and they over stuff so the temperature rating is right on for comfort, not just survive-ability (So they say). They also have two lines. The pricey er which compares to the one you have and the Econquilts which use 800 fill power Grey Duck Down, which is quite a bit cheaper but the quality is just as good. The fabric is just a little heavier than the regular as well (Ion 1.1). But you save about $100 a quilt and that's worth it for me. EX: 74"long x 50" wide weighs 27.16 oz or 1lb10 oz Base price is $180. A 30 degree is $138. You should check em out. They are the only quilts I own, but I did a lot of research before i bought them and the few ounces was worth the $100 per quilt.

    Great video. Quick question, Do you increase the temp rating of a bag by increasing the down fill? For instance, 2- 10 degree bags, one with 850 fill, the other with 950 fill. Which would be warmer? Or what performance differences would they have?

    • @Make_America_Trump_Again
      @Make_America_Trump_Again 6 лет назад +1

      Temp ratings are determined by loft/baffle height, which will require more down to fill taller baffles, of course. The different fill powers (850, 950, etc) are only going to have an impact on final weight and compressibility, not temp ratings.

    Hi Luke I have been looking at UGQ for about two months now and I am leaning towards purchasing a quilt. I would appreciate if you could help me build it. I am 5'11" 230#, with a shoulder girth of 55" and generally sleep on my side. AT 75 I am and not sure how much longer I will section hike so I was planning on an open foot box so I could use it at home as a comforter. Also I generally do not camp when temps drop below 30 degrees. If I get a quilt I will be purchasing a bag liner to add warmth and keep quilt cleaner. With that info what size and temp rating would you recommend. I know this was long and I thank you very much.

      I sent them a message Friday waiting in reply as well but yea I’m 5’10” last time I checked and broad shoulders (still need to measure) plan on using klymit static v lux pad which is 30” wide so I’m gonna need something pretty wide as well probably have to get their 60” or 65” I would imagine but if you learn any helpful information I would love to hear it. Like wide if I get any info I’ll reply to this.

    So forgive my naiveness, what's the difference between this and a down mummy style bag?

      @DonP_is_lostagain 5 лет назад

      Ignoring the idiot answer, the difference is in the video. a mummy bag is one solid piece of bag. it has a hood-type enclosure at the top, zipper on one side and fully encloses you from literally head to foot. However, the down underneath of you is a complete waste of down and weight. It will compress completely as you lay on it. With a quilt, there is no hood for your head, and the back (where you'd lay on it) is open. As Luke showed, with this particular quilt maker, there are loops and a shock cord system for basically hooking it around the pad. This puts only a small portion of the down under the pad. The rest of the quilt stays on top of you and you will be toasty warm.

    I wished they made a sleeping bag without the insulation on the bottom and the zipper going all the way down so it could be turned into a blanket.

    Fantastic price for that temp rating. I bought a Western Mountaineering Bristlecone MF tall, rated at -10F that has a list price of $910.00.
