It appears France has just received another blow from Senegal and her new president, the 44-year-old Bassirou Diomaye Faye. President Faye has promised that he will get rid of the colonial currency that France has been using to keep its former colonies under its grip.

Senegal's new president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, a 44-year-old former tax inspector, has promised to take the country out of the West African CFA franc, a currency pegged to the euro and viewed by many as a relic of French colonialism.

Africa needs a single currency
This idea of having a single currency is the way to go but the obstacles are huge than it. It's imperative to note that Africa is still divided and therefore, it's quite impossible to unit only on the issue of currency. It takes a wide range of aspects to reach that goal considering the external influences on our continent.
Maybe backed by gold. Africa has the most gold, why not take advantage of that?

Economic independence is the first thing African nations need they need to break the purse strings of economic dependency on Europe France and the rest of Europe needs to respect African nations rights to decide their own destinies and not have their destiny decided for them by a colonizer these relationships should be based on mutual respect and not dominance by one. The relationship should benefit both not just one country sucking everybody else dry while everyone else suffers while one country eats. Not a good idea to name the new currency after Euros or anything remotely resembling a spinoff of any western currency. To get the buyin from people in the country they should run a marketing campaign. People could then vote on the name of the new currency. Then organise the launch.
