Bits are used by idiots who think horses are tough when you should be sticking to hackamores. There is so many videos about bits being dangerous and painful to horses.
I ride and I use a bit because my horse is quite speedy and powerful, and I need to be able to control her. I ride her with her sensitive mouth in mind, but it would be more dangerous for both of us if I used no bit. And foam, like others have stated, just means the horse was chewing on the bit. Bits aren't dangerous if used correctly, it's only when inexperienced or uninformed people get on a horse and yank their mouths off. For quite a few horses, including mine, bits are important to us having a successful ride..
