- I might get more questions about making a paper towel arch more than anything else.
The right medial arch of the foot must come in contact with the ground during pronation of that same foot. So while the mechanical act of pronation may occur to one degree or another, your brain may not sense it as such.
Sometimes people are so patterned to the right that their brain no longer senses pronation, and as a result they can't shift their bodyweight to the left and get into left AF/IR. When they can't shift into left AF/IR their right glute will weaken because it's the right glute that has the job of pushing you over there. Use it or lose it!

I've been experimenting with other ways to get neutral after discovering this yesterday (mind utterly blown). I just managed to do it by lying on my back with knees bent, just pushed down through my left heel, paid attention to my left peripheral vision, breathed a bit, and that was it.
Then tried to do my usual pilates exercises and literally could do maybe 10% of normal, I guess due to my body just not knowing what to do with itself. But out of curiosity tried a glute bridge for the first time in ages and actually felt it in my glutes for the first time ever.
I just wanted to share this in case you weren't already aware of this way of doing it, might help some of your clients. You probably are aware already but also sharing for the potential benefit of anyone else reading this.

Anything that incorporates a left heel, left peripheral vision will inhibit left hip flexors.....as long as you breath. As you now realize, it has very little to do with the muscles themselves. Great job!

I think something just clicked for me about what you mean by "sensing" the left heel/right arch. I thought I needed to move in a way that distributes more weight to those parts of my feet, but it sounds (based on what you said in this video) as though it just means that I should focus attention on/feel those parts of my feet without (intentionally) changing how I move. If I understand that correctly, it's very helpful to know!
Correct. But the important thing to understand that all PRI techniques are training this sensory input so you don't have to do it during every day life.

I think sensing means being able to describe its texture, you can sense it if you can see it with your foot basically.

I did this sometime last winter. I heard you talk about paper towel, left heel and right medial arch. I do think its helped alot. I'm still, I believe realizing some glute disfunction with strength so I'm working on that. Also my right ankle had tight impingement at talus on right ankle so that's been disrupting my hip function moreso on that side. Ankle dorsiflexion has been better last 3 months. I think this impingement has really been a major source of things. Paper towels I think helping. Going from lots of back/hip pain to nearly none with better strength and range of motion, I'll take that any day! Thank for your time Neal. Little to no more trendelenburg type walking. Beautiful!

I wear a split for TMJ. I usually feel the splint more on my right molars. When I put the paper towel in my right arch I began to feel the split more on my left molars.

Hi Neal, just curious what (if anything) changes if you wear “zero drop” (also called barefoot-style) shoes that encourage a mid-foot strike instead of a gait led by a heel strike? I switched to these a couple years ago and they’ve made a huge difference for my left knee (severely injured 16 years ago)… especially for sports or even moderately long walks.
Would a medial arch of some sort make sense or work for actual barefoot walking too? Thanks for any insight, and all the knowledge you share with everyone!
Neal, I’ve had problems with lack of pronation in my right arch. I felt like all the PRI exercises I was doing would offset because of this and after trying this little trick, I am already starting to feel relief! Maybe this trick will keep my brain from losing “sense” for the ground and the PRI exercises can finally help me get over the hump of having this dreadful left AIC pattern. Thank you sir.

From my understanding, because of that typical lack of pronation on the right foot, you would typically see patients/clients that appear to have more right arch on the R foot compared to the L correct? The left foot would seem more flat compared to the right, right?
Yes, that is the most common visual appearance in a Left AIC pattern.
Is it a good idea to walk around with the paper towel in throughout the day?
Am i supposed to this every day once, or wear this every day?
This helped. The whole time I tought that my right arch was ok because it looked pronated, and that my left foot could cause the problem because it was high arched and rigid. Do you thing that left high arch and rigid foot could also cause some kind of problems? Im planning on getting some good orthotics, never thought that feet could affect our body so drasticly. That used to confuse me, too. My left foot has the higher arch, actually it's a slight structural abnormality, so I always thought my left foot was the issue. But in reality my left foot will pronate just fine as long as my right foot pronates properly. But when my right foot doesn't pronate properly, I don't feel anything "off" with my right foot. My left foot feels "off". So it's very deceptive.

haha i love how you'r trolling us at the end of the video ! i'm on u'r program for one month now and all i can say is that the techniques are very difficult to master, however i'm making progress and i have a question : i can consistently get over 30° in shoulder horizontal abduction test in both sides (by doing it correctly) but my right shoulder is still going forward even when my pelvis is neutral and aligned with my rib cage. is it a muscle tightness (pec minor...) that needs to be released or it's something else ? thank u sir
Hard for me to say. But a right shoulder that "wants" to come forward isn't uncommon. Definitely could be a tight pec minor, could be lack of a left ZOA. Could be lack of right big toe awareness. Could be anything. Without testing you, there is no way for me to know what you lack.
I think I will buy "rubber arch add on sole" or sew an arching pad of cloth on my socks. Or should I do this only for my right sock or both socks?.

This is pretty amazing. I listen to your videos while I do my PRI excercises and tried this trick. I've been doing so many PRI exercises and got myselfr from PEC to left AIC fairly quickly but have had very slow results undoing the APT. Every time I can get it back in place it lasts for about 5 minutes and it tilts back anteriorly. I tried this and my left hip seems to not be tilting! But as soon as I take it off (say at the end of the day and walk barefoot at home), the tilt comes back.
I'm working with a PRI pt on this already, but any idea of how long it takes for the body to learn to use the left (and not needing that extra sensory signal from the paper towel?)
It really just depends on what is driving the issue. Usually the hang-up is in the neck area, but the neck is influenced by the entire sensory system (including ground input). Some people need orthotics.
Do you only put it on the right? I am way more flatter on my left and over pronate. Can I do this for both so I can be normal? 😂

Hi Neal, I am so glad I found your channel. Thanks for the effort to put these things together and shared. A question, I can use paper towels so that I don’t need to change my shoes? I love vans shoes but they are skate shoes which is flat, no arch support. Should I avoid them?
And I am in left aic pattern, but my right foot is pronated and flat than my left foot. And the outer sole shows my weight shift to my right heel.
It really just depends on your situation. The paper towel is usually just a temporary intervention to see if someone needs better "sensory" sneakers until their body feels better. Some people are very sensitive. Some are are not. You just have to experiment.

Neil when you mention that pronation on the right foot needs the ExternalRotation fibers of glutemax & posterior fibers of glute medius, along with sensing of the right media arch; does this imply that on the left leg you simultaneously need: extension of femur (accomplished with extension fibers of glutemax) along with adductors and anterior fibers of glutemedius?
How about putting the sock on and attach tape to the sock from the outside?
Love your visa. Why doesn't the sock and in sole provide that neutral input? I can feel my shoes provide that support on my arch
Because "the patterned" body above it has shifted their brain's sense of "normal" to the outside of the right foot and they lose the sense of ground under the arch of the right foot, plus many people where minimalist sneakers with no arch.

I have S scoliosis and right hip hiked up so leg 3 mm shorter to the ground. My right foot turns out and my left adductors very tight so problems on my right leg however my arches are very normal so would the paper towel be helpful and at a loss for the right kind of shoes. Thanks your channel is fab !
If you have a true scoliosis (rather than idiopathic), proper shoes may be a factor, but my guess is that the bigger issue will be keeping your rib cage "open" so that you can breathe with proper diaphragmatic activity. We all need right foot pronation sense, but the paper towel isn't really "treatment", it just helps to allow "treatment" to occur.
good evening, for flat feet with low plantar arches, how are the leaflets inserted?

Not everyone needs it. Most people don't actually. I only use it to demonstrate to people that they need better sneakers, or get their tests to change.

All most people should need to do is have a decent pair of sneakers. I realize I'm going to have to make another video about this.

You say arch is always in the left foot but I have more prominent arch in my left foot.
My left pelvis is tilted up too.

This didn't work for me, it seemed to push me closer to to neutral but I'm pretty sure I'm patho PEC and I also suspect my right arch has partially collapsed. I've made an appointment with podiatrist.

Hey Neal, both of the thumbs on my feet are collapsed inwards, towards each other, is that the result of overpronation? Should I focus on the thumbs or they are just consequence of the collapse of the whole feet?

I really only use it for testing purposes. To see if ranges of motion change during PRI tests.

No. Someone can sense the weight on the left foot, but more towards the arch and big toe. In that case it wouldn't be the same thing.
If I can’t unlock my left knee what does it mean? That my left hamstring is to weak?
It probably means you are using the left knee to compensate for lack of proper pelvis and ribcage mechanics. Why you can't re-establish proper mechanics, I don't know.

I stopped wearing the prisms long ago. It was only for six weeks. I'm fine. I get some low back tension from time to time, but it's not pain, just tension. I know it's sensory (eyes and feet).

Neither arch will probably touch the ground. That's why it's an arch and not flat. The problem isn't that they don't touch the ground. The problem is that we live on flat floors. If we walked around on natural earth, the uneven soft earth would fill the arch.
If the valgus knee isn't something you were born with, then quite possibly it's the overall "pattern" and the resultant compensations that can produce a valgus knee.

Where to put this on flat feet? Or supernated foot? I have left flat foot and tight upper right back and left neck muscle weakness and tight right neck scm muscle. So I think I put this on my left foot....(flat one).. Am I right??? Because putting this on right foot for about 2 months would not helps me.
This will not work for everyone, and it's only used to show people that they need different shoes. It's not a permanent solution, and it won't change anything if people aren't doing a PRI program. Many people are wearing shoes that their brain doesn't "like", and are experiencing pain as a result.
How to i know if it worked?

Hey Neil, for an overly pronated R foot would a R arch pad still be applicable?
It's hard to say. An overly pronated right foot probably has some compensations going on higher up. You can certainly try it. The only way to really know what you need is through PRI testing. Otherwise you are just guessing.

K T No, because our brain already has awareness of the left arch.
After I finished the video I realized I hadn't addressed that question. In general you don't want someone to sense their left arch. Just left heel. However I have made paper towel arches for left feet also, usually if someone is wearing minimalist shoes and have no arch sense on either side. That way they can feel a "teeter-toter" effect, instead of just flatness. In effect, I use the paper towel arch to allow them to feel their left heel.

It's possible. But you need right glute strength via PRI techniques for it to stay "off".

Eppy Stein it depends on the person. Some people need to feel their arch, so they need a shoe with an insole. Some people need to stay on the arch more, so they may need a lateral shoe wedge to help their “supinated-minded” foot stay on the arch better. Peoples feet differ due to the conditions of life.

If you are talking about my personal situation, it was the other way around. My vision threw me into a pattern that caused a visual tilting of the pelvis.
It's all due to bad emotion in body .these body deformity goes slowly once we learn to work on your emotional well being

It's not a permanent solution. It's to get someone's brain to "recognize" pronation so they can turn their overactive muscles "off".

If you are barefoot on the natural earth, that's great. If you are barefoot on a flat floor, there is nothing to touch the arch. So the brain stops recognizing pronation.
