  • I hacked into the Mr. Christmas unit that I used last year so that I could install an audio cable that I could use to play the music on a much better sounding external outdoor speaker, and broadcast the music with an FM transmitter. Basically I opened up the unit (you'll need a 2.5 mm triangle screwdriver to remove the plate on the back and to remove the screws on the bottom that connect the top half to the bottom half), snipped the white & yellow wires leading to the speaker, and spliced them with a 3.5 mm audio cable. I connected the red & white wires of the audio cable to the white speaker wire, and connected the bare wire of the audio cable to the yellow speaker wire. I drilled a hole in the bottom of the unit to feed the audio cable through.
WARNING: If you do this, make sure your unit is UNPLUGGED!!!
Using an audio splitter connected to the audio cable, I ran a 3.5 mm audio cable to my outdoor external speaker, and another 3.5 mm audio cable to my FM transmitter. The music now sounds fantastic when listening to it outdoors! So much more bass! When I tune my car's radio to the FM frequency that I'm using to broadcast the music, the music sounds as good as it does in this video.
To record the HQ audio for this video, I connected the audio cable (that I spliced into the Mr. Christmas unit) to the Line-In input jack of a high-quality digital audio recorder. If you watch this video and have a really good set of speakers or headphones, I think you'll agree that the built-in speaker in the Mr. Christmas unit doesn't do justice to the music.
Hopefully someday they'll manufacture the units with an audio output jack for the purpose of connecting the unit to a better speaker and/or an FM transmitter. Then we wouldn't have to risk damaging the unit by hacking into it to install an audio cable.
NOTE: If you use an FM transmitter, you'll have to set the volume of the unit to a low setting (I have mine set to about 9 o'clock, approximately 2 lines above MIN), and use an Inline Audio Volume Control before connecting to the FM transmitter because the audio level will be too strong for the FM transmitter and you'll hear mostly static on your radio unless you use an Inline Audio Volume Control.
DISCLAIMER: I am not an electrician, so if you choose to hack/modify your Mr. Christmas unit in the same manner as I did, do so at your own risk. Just make sure the unit is UNPLUGGED before you open it up and start cutting/splicing wires. And wear protective goggles, just in case!

It’s crazy to hear the pure recording of the songs, they sound so different when not coming through the unit and they do actually sound a lot better and to me they actually kinda sound like a old style 8-bit video game
    Especially the song at 11:30

I have the Mr Christmas Musical laser light show and some of the songs it has are also on this. The songs that are on the laser projector are also redone and sound alot better, probably the best rendition of those songs

There also appears to be 3 different sound fonts with the boxes, There’s one that focuses more on the bass clef notes and parts, one that focuses more on the treble clef notes and parts, and one that has all the parts and equal volume and pitch, I believe you have the bass clef sound font

That makes sense because you can really hear the bass now that I've connected an audio cable to the unit. I actually had to turn the bass all the way down on my outdoor speaker because it was a bit overpowering, and even then it's still quite strong. The 2021 Mr. Christmas unit from Best Buy is different from last year's version. It has settings for "Siberian" and "Traditional", but doesn't have an "All Songs" setting like the 2020 version has. Some of the songs on the Traditional setting are also different. IMO the 2020 version is better. BTW I uploaded this year's Christmas light show already. ruclips.net/video/mzQ_PnbVKLI/видео.html

@@martinafan64 It's funny too because the built-in speakers for these at least for my July 2019/1440w unit (same as yours) lacks a lot of bass compared to the ones sold 10-15 years ago (back when they rebadged as GE and used the treble clef sound font).
PS: I think the unit in the photo is the one sold around 15 years ago because the one I have lacks the silver front knobs.

@@vina5428 Too bad they changed to a lower-quality speaker over the years. I hope someday they manufacture them with better speakers, or at least make them with a 3.5 mm audio jack so you can use a separate speaker and/or FM transmitter. There's a HUGE different in sound quality using a good speaker. Yep, the 2020 & 2021 units that I have also don't have silver knobs. The pic I used in the video is from this year's listing of Mr. Christmas from Best Buy, so they're obviously using a pic of an older model.

my 2007 Ge/ Mr Christmas box has a volume knob problem ( or thats what i think) so i have a fealing we may lose it, but i to have done the fm transmiter swap and it sounds amazing just a little bit of static here and there.🙂

Glad u were successful in hacking your Mr. Christmas box! I was paranoid and thought I might ruin it so I ordered another Mr. Christmas unit last year before I tried the hack in case I damaged my original. These are getting harder to find, so always good to have a backup unit!

    • @martinafan64
      @martinafan64  2 года назад

Yep, probably because the built-in speaker sounds terrible. The FM transmitter is great for people who want to stay warm in their cars while hearing the music for the light show. So far I've just told a few neighbors, friends, & coworkers which FM frequency I'm using, but I'm thinking of putting a "Tune to 96.5 FM" sign on our lawn.

That's really cool, looking forward to hearing that 2007 version! Unfortunately I may have to "go dark" this year. Having too many problems with my lower back and shoulders. I've already had physical therapy on one shoulder and will need it on the other soon. Switched to Mr. Christmas a few yrs ago because it's a much easier/faster setup compared to my Light-O-Rama setup, but I may have to skip doing an outdoor display this Christmas.
