Firearms Training - Carrying Spare Magazines in Pocket

  • Firearms Training - Most of us fit our gun and carry method to the way we dress, not the other way around. We may not have a lot of room to carry a full-size magazine, so we put it in a pocket. Rob Pincus discusses and demonstrates the issues with carrying a magazine in a pants cargo pocket or a jacket pocket. With the magazine in a pocket, reloads take more time because the magazine may be difficult to access, making practice essential.

    Did anyone else notice he fed his spare magazine backwards into his pistol after he dropped it? Don't forget to index the round with your pointer finger before attempting to reload to avoid backwards reloading.

    Practice getting the mag oriented in your fingers before you pull it out of the pocket.
    This has two major benefits. First, if you "butterfinger" it, it's still in your pocket, not on the ground. Second, it is aligned with your wrist and fingers and will follow your hand out of the pocket more smoothly than it would if held more perpendicular to the wrist and fingers.

    I use a NeoMag to help my pocket spare mags. It's not only sped up my reloads but givens assurance that it is indeed there.

    It's not about using every round in your magazine, it is more about carrying a spare magazine, to correct failures from your primary magazine. I hope this makes sense for you.

    I normally wear jeans and carry an LCP. As a leftie I carry a spare mag in the small watch/change pocket on the right side and practice reloading at the range.

    This is why you should spend a little bit of money $15-$20 (not including shipping and tax) for small, purpose-built, belt-fastened mag carriers. They have retention and it doesn't take up room in your pocket nor is there any fishing around for a mag in a pocket somewhere.

    I carry a spare mag base plate up in my front left pants pocket. This way, the front lip of the base plate is right at the top and I can easily find it and pull it out. It turns out that that is the same grip on the magazine that I use to insert it into the grip.

    I've carried a handgun daily as a Soldier, LEO and civilian for over 20 years. As a civilian I've never needed an extra mag or not even fired my weapon in a defensive situation. I carry a Sig 938 w/7+1 or a 1911 with 8+1 and that's it. No spares. In over 3000+ rds between my 928 and preferred 1911 I've had ZERO malfunctions or issues to justify a spare mag. The national average for a civilian shooting is 3 shots in 3 seconds at 3 feet. As a LEO who was involved in a shooting fatality I fired 8 rds with 100 percent accuracy ( This situation is one I would never be in as a civilian). This fear mongering is pure BS. Of all the 500 plus members of my gun range I'm the only one who has shot and killed anyone outside of the military. I even asked if they knew anyone who has had to shoot anyone with a pistol. No one did. Carrying an extra mag is like wearing a helmet while driving your car daily. Sure it may or could save your life one day but the chances of that day are all but nonexistent and is why we don't wear helmets to drive to work or the grocery store.

    This is why I love Crossbreed tuckable IWB mag carriers. I have a double and a single version for Glock 19. I wear the double at the 7:30-8:30 position in fall, winter, and early spring when I wear bulkier clothing; but in summer I wear the single carrier at 10:30, in the crease in front of my left hip bone.
    I wish I could wear 511s all the time so I could stand mags up in a cargo pocket, but having them just laying loose in there, banging my knee all day, would bother me.

    I carry a spare mag on my belt. Everyday. All handgun cartridges suck at stopping threats. I have numerous accounts of people taking multiple potentially lethal hits of 9, 40, and 45 and still fighting. The point is every round makes a difference. People don't go down easy. If I have to reload that means I was just putting rounds into someone and my reload better be fast because they might not be impressed by the rounds I gave them. As CCW carriers we would already be behind the power curve

    Its really awkward looking when you put your hands up just before your draw. Why would you do that? In what possible situation would your hands be in that position?

    as others have pointed out, look into an IWB spare magazine carrier. you can also have one made for a spare mag/ defensive light combo.

    I would like to have a dollar for every time someone drew to fire and their mag dropped out of the gun. Oh, that's not supposed to happen - when it does you've got a single shot pistol which you may want to reload, either on the range or in the field. As Rob showed us, training may not be what you think it is; and fights are just what they are; no two are exactly alike. Logic applied and illustrated - coulda' shoulda' woulda' BUT "What If"? ... Nice job, Rob!

      Another reason why magazine disconnects are a death sentence

  • @seancrooker2202
    @seancrooker2202 9 лет назад

    I feel while important the idea of reloading a mag in a real world scenarios is almost moot, there are two reasons you would be shooting at someone either they have a gun or their close enough to you to physically hurt you,
    If they have a gun and I needed to reload I would not be standing I would be hopefully behind something and laying on my belly or something else
    And if they are physically attacking me reloading wouldn't be an option any way
    But I really don't know anything about it

    • @n300zx931
      @n300zx931 9 лет назад +1

      I tend to agree and depending on you're training and how good of a shot you are the rounds in your fun may be plenty. I carry a compact Glock 32 357SIG that holds 15 rounds. That's quite a few for a well trained person and should be plenty to make it away or to cover. The difference has more to do with who you want to be. Do you want to be the wall that the mass shooter encounters that ends his life and saves the lives of many others or is it a more simplistic approach to personal safety and self defense? The Sheepdog is a well trained and armed citizen that acts as a wall in place of what would otherwise be a free for all for a bad guy. A man who carries for defense alone uses his firearm and a shield in the use of defending his life alone. Either option is fine, but spare magazines tend to be reserved for the Sheepdog.

    Keep it simple stupid. Don’t try to pace back and forth while you fish for your mag... Lmao Of course you dropped it. Move off the x(if that’s how you want to train). Then, Get your mag situated in your hand before you decide to move again. Rob, I get what you’re trying to do but damn...
