I have used aircraft paint stripper and it was quite effective, enough so double nitrile 5 mil gloves were not enough to keep from burning my hands. One trick I've seen is to place plastic wrap over the stripper to keep it wet helps.
I see everyone below is recommending media blasting of some type and I would agree. It's going to take you a month of Sundays to hand scrap that whole truck and allot of moneys worth of paint stripper. Harbor Freight sandblaster is well priced and a tool you will get tons of use out of for many years. Lots of work to be sure but the old girl is going to look awesome when she's done and worth all the time and money!! Can't wait to see the finished result!
I've always used powdered dish washer detergent with water to flush cooling systems. Had an oil cooler crap out and put a few gallons of oil into the cooling system. A couple flushes with Cascade and it was all better! I do it every time I change coolant in my 04 379.

I like how you jump in and get things done...I think you're on the right track with those strippers, just do a section at a time and it'll be done in no time ;-)
Been bing watching your series on the Pete...great content, really enjoy the uploads. Your approach to each task is commendable. Although I might be a little late to the paint stripping party, a few things I'd add to the conversation: first, a good scuff of the paint seems to allow the chemical stripper to work its magic more effectively. Next, another thing I've done in the past is that I'll apply the chemical to the paint, and then cover the area with cellophane wrap. The cellophane wrap slows down the rate of evaporation giving the chemical stripper more time to dissolve the paint underneath. Finally, as mentioned in a few of the comments, a good grade of aircraft paint remover (although costlier than off the Walmart shelf remover) is worth the extra $ in the effectiveness of the product. I'll also add the at chemical stripper have a sweet spot for atmospheric / ambient temp that it works most effectively. Thanks for taking the time to share your journey. -A
Keith Rucker uses Citrustrip and has good success with it. He does like Eric Corse says and puts plastic wrap on it to keep it wet overnight. I use a wire brush in a side grinder!
@@Ezrider359 Keith uses it to help restore all kinds of metal working equipment like mills and lathes and such with several coats of paint, like your Pete. I stripped a car that had the original and 3 other paint jobs on it, what a mess. I used aircraft stripper from NAPA and it did a good job, the stuff is powerful enough to eat holes in the metal can it comes in. If I had it to do over I'd go dustless blasting. As a matter of fact I have another restoration project in the works and for almost the same money as I spent on stripper and paint stripping disks I have bought a 4500 PSI pressure washer and wet blast wand. The lye in the stripper might be a little hard on the aluminum skin you are working with and be careful around the fiberglass. It ate the body filler out of all the old body repairs and was hard to clean out of the seams and spot-welded areas.
Got into my 1953 GMC 620 series today and bang my head good on my air motor for wipers. They are up where the visors usually are. I thought they were cool until today.

Here in Australia vehicle restorers tend to use soda blasting because any damage, scratching or warping to what is being stripped of old coatings of paint
Air craft paint stripper seems to work pretty well. It compared to those two. I used it to strip a whole car down. Slowly but surely. It bubbled up and came right off
For people saying sand blast. It takes a long time and a whole lot a sand. I’m sand blasting a jeep frame right now and it’s time consuming and expensive.
Hire someone to come out and use dustless blasting would be time and money ahead by the time you figure how labor intensive stripper will be and cost of the stripper and all the other things needed to be done after using stripper
I think media blasting would be the better alternative to that stripper. Those strippers would eat up too much time you could have that truck down to bare metal in the matter of a few hours compared to stripping it with strippers.
Agreed. Although even media blasting would take more than a few hours to remove that much paint from aluminum without distorting the aluminum. But I'm not going to sand blasting inside my shop and have that mess it will be to cold outside to do it outside
Dry ice it works like sand blasting but it won't chip glass eat rubber or damage the aluminum we use it in the aircraft world because after it melts your only left with paint chips and that's fairly easy to clean up it's definitely 1/2 as much as all of the stripper your going to use and much better for the environment you can rent the machine from Sunbelt rentals and the special dry ice that's shaped like little pieces of rice comes in special containers that will keep it good for about 3 days here in the summer heat of South Carolina

Every method of paint removal comes with its own problems. Soda blasting gets in everything and is hard to remove and must be nutrilized or NOTHING will stick to it. Dustless blasting WILL warp panels if not done correctly and leaves sludge in places that's hard to get out. Chemical stripper gets under rivets and will haunt you down the road. Sanding being careful not to buzz the rivets is best. A Mirka palm sander works awesome although very $$$600. A course enough wire wheel to eat up the paint would also eat up the aluminum
What was wrong with the wiper man?
im thinking it must be in the valve assembly on the one end. im going to look and see if rebuild kits are readily available or possibly a replacement. i didn't get it working.
@@Ezrider359 you should be able to fix it with basic parts available at a hardware store. Aren't they like air tools? Usually not complicated stuff. Probably has a bugs nest in one of the air ports.
@@shawnshelhamer7398 yeah i took it all apart and cleaned everything thinking the same thing. i can tell someone else has had it apart before too. i don't have any diagrams or anything on it so its hard to tell if something may have been previously put together wrong or something missing ect.
@@Ezrider359 there's gotta be a working one somewhere you can compare or another RUclipsr with a similar repair issue with a video. I like the idea of keeping it original
Yeah I'll get it working. I just ran out of time that day. I plan to keep it air wipers. I had another truck with air wipers before and I don't mind them.
