  • This evening, Akron Public School's Board of Education will decide on proposed cuts that would save the school district $24 million next year as it looks to rectify its budget.
The proposal could potentially eliminate 285 temporary/vacant positions, with more than 100 of those jobs being removed through retirements and resignations.
Now, community members, including students and parents, are set to voice their concerns.
According to the Akron Beacon Journal, students at the Garfield Community Learning Center are planning a walkout on Monday before the board votes on the proposed cuts.
In addition, the Akron Education Association (AEA) plans to hold an informational rally and press conference at 4 p.m. in order to support the district's teachers and students.
Officials say that educators, staff, parents and supporters are expected to attend.
AEA's Patricia Shipe released the following statement to 3News:
"It has been a difficult and shocking week at Akron Public Schools. During a time when we should be celebrating the success of our students, instead we are surrounded by chaos and uncertainty. All the more intensified by the complete lack of transparency and communication on the part of Superintendent Robinson and his Administration as they target educator jobs. It is the Association’s belief that recent moves by this Administration have been directly aimed at eliminating professional educator jobs held by union members."
In response, Mark Williamson, an Akron Public Schools spokesperson, released the following statement to 3News:
"We do not engage in this practice," said Williamson. "Further, this allegation has not been brought to the district's attention. That would be the appropriate way to address such concerns. Therefore, we will not respond to assertions based on speculation."
The district says that in addition to cuts, it will need additional funding to keep the budget on track. It hopes that voters will pass a levy in the fall.
Monday's board meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Akron Public School's School Board of Education headquarters, located on North Main Street.
