omg Laura is hilarious, this is too freakin real, this reminds me of every soprano in my voice program who gets tasked to sing a musical theatre piece and doesn't know how to act, or gets another classical aria that they can probably sing just fine but they cAN'T ACT ughhh drives me cra-zazy! (as Seth would say)
+Jordan Nickel-Dubin lol to be clear, i love her (in a "you're a little cringey sometimes but i feel it" way) and i do think she's got a lovely instrument. but oh my god, so much with the oversinging! and she's the worst offender when it comes to shitty british accents - every time i watch the phantom dvd and she goes, "when you WEHHHHNT EENTO THA SEEEEA TOOOO FEHTCH MY SCAAAAAHF" i CAN'T, i just, i just _can't_. I CAN'T!
Hahaha love Laura! and I think it's so funny she does all these things too! In She Loves Me she even has the weird transatlantic accent :) I feel like this is a "takes one to know one video" so I don't think there's really one actress she's calling out, but just funny singing habits in general
If you play the piano I believe it's essentially the same thing as rubato. It's a stylistic thing where you intentionally either sing certain notes before or after the beat (ie. for different time values than they were written).
@OscarMoeRuffus It's when a singer sings behind the beat of the music. When used properly it sounds dramatic and soulful, when used inappropriately it sounds like a big, ugly mess and ruins the line of the music.
Yeah, thank you so much! I love musical theatre! Like for me, I think it's because i come from the choir background, you know that My teachers and everybody tells me that I'm just singing and I'm like... what do you mean? and they're like acting? I used to think if you go in and sing and wail and belt these crazy insane high notes, that's how you book it, and that's how you get the job. I'm 20, it took me this year to realize it's all the acting. how can you make it you? No one really showed me
Musical Theatre is different from let's say Opera in the fact that you can take more liberty with the music. Now, that doesn't mean you don't have to sing what's written, but there are moments when you should take liberty and fill it with an acting beat. Or sometimes you are so caught up in the song and in the acting of the song that you naturally take liberties in the acting and even how the song is written. Does that make sense?
I wonder why she doesn’t like her though, I mean SB is definitely overrated in terms of talent but she does arguably seem a nice person who doesn’t take herself too seriously
What do you mean behind the beat? Do you mean that the voice is softer than the beat or that she's singing off pace with the beat? I'm curious about what back phrasing is, too.
also i hate when back phrasing is bad it's like they can't reach the high notes quickly enough so they take a long time to reach it OR they sing it really fast so it sounds chirpy and it ruins the rhythm of the song ugh. i also hate scooping lol but laura scoops in the She Loves Me recording.
i'm obsessed with musical theatre, but there's some like choices, that I've never heard of. what is speaking fainting i'm acting? what does he mean when he's talking about how it's a great acting choices, but they're talking about the rhythm of the music? Was wondering if you could clear this up?
oh just flat out saying it, instead of using it to act. what was he talking about when he says like the music is written in 3/8's so i'm going to sing it? "the one time you should be backphrasing, you don't."
Can there just be a Laura Benanti channel? Online, on tv, wherever - just all Laura, all the time. Perfection!
I can't get enough of Laura! :)
"I wish I was an oboe."
this is the best one.

lmao sierra boggess literally does every single one of these things ahahahaha
+tiffany aching She does?

+tiffany aching HAHAHAHAHA IM CRYING
Oh my god! Everything. All of this. I love Sierra too, but I just can't listen to her for very long.
@@puellamagica3359 and “olllllweeeesssss” 🤦🏼♀️
RIP Laura and Stephen
Michael Samhat true!! Stephen is now married to Phillipa Soo!
Seth's wheezing laugh brings joy to my heart.
Adore Laura! She's such a talent and so hilarious!
Her "bad audition" is hilarious. But still so good.
That's why she won the Tony
Just saying Laura Benanti worked with Sierra Boggess on the cast album for A Little Princess...
I wonder if they didn’t get on lol 🐸 ☕️
She is literally so hilarious I can't stand it
All of the actresses being called out in these comments..... 😂
Literally after the beat. Not by much, but when used effectively it is GREAT.
Hahaha love Laura! and I think it's so funny she does all these things too! In She Loves Me she even has the weird transatlantic accent :) I feel like this is a "takes one to know one video" so I don't think there's really one actress she's calling out, but just funny singing habits in general
Augh, you psyched me out with the Wicked songbook! Thought I was gonna hear her sing something from the show.
If you play the piano I believe it's essentially the same thing as rubato. It's a stylistic thing where you intentionally either sing certain notes before or after the beat (ie. for different time values than they were written).
I LOVE HER!!!

I've watched this video, more specifically the end, once a day for the past week. I'm OBSESSED. Haha... it's a pun.

@OscarMoeRuffus Thanks. So it's a rhythm thing. Thought it had something to do with placement in the throat. Thanks for clearing it up.
I love you, Laura!! :D
Oh god, is it bad that Sierra Boggess does like, all of these... hahaha
The Cow is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO perfect! Thats why they get the big money
ahhhhhh I listen to Seth Rudetsky on the radio and I did not think he looked like that
Her voice and personality reminds me of Sandra Bullock.
I wish I was an oboe too, Laura.

I'm dead. I love this.
It's aimed at Sierra Boggess
As much as I love her, she is all I could think about when they were describing that lmao
I mean Sierra does it well. She makes it work.
You didn't have to come for her man
I wonder why she doesn’t like her though, I mean SB is definitely overrated in terms of talent but she does arguably seem a nice person who doesn’t take herself too seriously
@@melissam597 Maybe because of all the hype around someone she considers less talented. Or to draw attention to poor technique
What do you mean behind the beat? Do you mean that the voice is softer than the beat or that she's singing off pace with the beat? I'm curious about what back phrasing is, too.
she's great
Hmm...I read her wiki bio and it mentions nothing about her being Italian. Benanti is her stepfather's name.
also i hate when back phrasing is bad it's like they can't reach the high notes quickly enough so they take a long time to reach it OR they sing it really fast so it sounds chirpy and it ruins the rhythm of the song ugh. i also hate scooping lol but laura scoops in the She Loves Me recording.
She was purposely doing mistakes and yet still managed to sound amazing.
She left out the speaking-feigning-she's-acting low note avoidance!
That was the “him” in “I love him.”
From 7:03 to like 7:08 I hear Carolee Carmelo
what is back phrasing?
This is HUH-larious and oh so true! ;)
HAHAH. "I don't want to be aware of your diction lessons." Talk about foreshadowing to My Fair Lady.
What song is she singing at the end
It's the song "Bill" from the musical "Showboat" :)
Angel Goldstein thanks ✨
Mrs. Trump 😍
Seth, please bring Laura to Broadway at the Wallis in 2019. PLEASE!
Lol sierra boggess...
On the other hand, following every rule, won't make a generic voice sound special. Interchangeable sopranos are a dime a dozen.
YES!!
i'm obsessed with musical theatre, but there's some like choices, that I've never heard of. what is speaking fainting i'm acting? what does he mean when he's talking about how it's a great acting choices, but they're talking about the rhythm of the music? Was wondering if you could clear this up?
The diction comment is for Patti Lupone
At 5:24 is he saying "Speaking. Fainting. I'm acting?" I'm not understanding.
*speaking of feigning
Doris Roberts?
steven is with pippa now :O aw.
What song is she singing?
"Bill" from the musical "Show Boat"
I love her mooing!
"you ruined the button."
oh just flat out saying it, instead of using it to act. what was he talking about when he says like the music is written in 3/8's so i'm going to sing it? "the one time you should be backphrasing, you don't."
What's wrong with apologizing if it's true..it happens .
#Benania
that before.
Uhh... Meryl Streep is from New Jersey
Laura marry me already!!!!!
What is that cow story is that part of Gypsy? And who had genuinely no talent or stage presence..her character ?
Lol yes her character. The moo cow song is a scene from the show ; you should def see gypsy at some point its amazing
It's not a pun.
ma moo, ma m...
speaking, "feigning" acting. Like, if you can't hit a note you speak it instead and play it off as a deliberate acting choice. Cop-out! :)
Dude really does have terrible diction; I couldn't hear a damn word he said explaining their last example.
What is back phrasing??
Hitting a note just behind the beat...jazz singers do this. So do many female vocal pop singers.
