Celine opened my eyes to the reality of the world when a cousin gave me a copy of Journey to The End of The Night in 1962. I have since read every book as they were translated. Everyone copied him but no one could match his flawless view of humanity and wondrous black humor.
Troppo simpatico…divertente, anche nel dramma…oltre a essere un genio…oramai leggo solo Céline…lo leggo, lo rileggo…ascolto la sua voce…troppo bello, unico. Grazie. Merci beaucoup.
5:40 Burgess tried to express this point in the 60s too. Tried to express what was being adapted by the youth of his day. Some sort of unintellectual lazy indulgance in a cloud of pot smoke.
Burgess was criticising the hippies at that time for their carefree philosophy and hedonistic lifestyles, which would prove to be detrimental for the decades to come. On that, I must say he was correct, but he sometimes crossed the line and said that youth knew no wisdom. It's a bold statement but not at all true, of course. Youth may not have experience, but that doesn't mean it lacks wisdom, does it? He wrote a paper, a very bad one, in my opinion, which centred on this very idea and which also reflected his conservative ideas on institutions and the arts (novels and music). Anyway, Celine here is speaking of writers without style. He wasn't accusing anyone of intellectual laziness or hedonism, and he wasn't definitely criticising the young for that matter.
