    We start the day with mie balap or “racing noodles’, so named because people pick up a plate on their way to work whilst they’re in a rush so they need to be cooked super fast. Made up of wok fried flat rice noodles, egg and sprouts the dish looks like a gluggy mess but the proof is in the taste- it bursts with flavour and retains a smokiness from the wok.
    Our next stop is for a popular drink in Medan- an avocado shake- smashed avocado, chocolate syrup and evaporated milk combines to make a thick, creamy sweet confection.
    We then head for a feast of tribal food- BPK or Babi Panggang Karo- a dish of the Karo people made up of grilled pork, blood sausage, fried pork accompanied by a blood sauce and spicy sambal. Unique and startlingly spicy- this is one meal you have to eat in Medan.
    Medan has a growing coffee culture and we sample the local coffee at our final stop- a cafe called 38 Coffee Lab owned by Jaya Pranata- runner up in the 2017 Aeropress championships.
    Where we ate:
    Mie balap “Racing Noodles” at Mie Balap Krakatau, Jl. Gunung Krakatau, Glugur Darat I, Medan Tim., Kota Medan, Sumatera Utara 20236. Open daily 7:00am to 11:30am.
    Avocado shake at Pockat Kocok Simpang Glugur Bukiya, Jl. KL Yos Sudarso No.21 K, Glugur Kota, Medan Bar., Kota Medan, Sumatera Utara 20115. Open daily 11:00am to 10:00pm.
    Babi Panggang Karo (BPK) at BPK Ola Kisat, Jl. Jamin Ginting No.839, Beringin, Medan Selayang, Kota Medan, Sumatera Utara 20157. Open daily 10:00am to 9:00pm.
    Coffee at 38 Coffee Lab, Jalan Dagan No.2h, Sekip, Medan Petisah, Sekip, Medan Petisah, Kota Medan, Sumatera Utara 20113. Open 10:00am to 10:00pm Monday to Saturday, 2:00pm to 9:00pm Sunday.

      The title is not compatible with the picture... because the picture depic muslim women..
      But muslim dont use blood as part of food because for muslim blood is unclean..
      for me personally.. It confusing..

      Hi mohd zahidfullah abd razak. We ate a number of food in this video. The "super fast cooking" part relates to the picture but because the video is about more than that we had to give more info in the title. The blood sauce is from the BPK meal. Thanks for watching and we hope you enjoyed the video. Cheers, Thomas 😀

      @@ChasingaPlate totally understood..
      Just express my concern because when i saw the picture i thought my muslim brothers and sisters in indonesia use blood in their food and it disturbed me a little bit.
      Of course in 1.8 billion population..
      Maybe some muslim do that..
      Muslim is not perfect..
      however we need to avoid to show our sinful act or our fellow muslim sinful act to public..
      For example.. May be some muslim eat pork..
      But it is not easy for you to see video muslim eat pig or drink alcohol.. for 1.8 billion peoples.
      Supposed to be easy.
      Just convey the concern because the title disturbed me a little bit..
      But of course..
      for a muslim point of view..
      It is a very good clickbait..
      I was one of your earliest subscriber.. Maybe the 600 something..
      Just want the best for you..
      For improvement your future videos..
      Thank you very much Thomas & Sheena..

    The purpose of Indonesian people eating with hands is to have this comfort way of eating meals, so if your comfort way of eating is with fork and spoon/knife then please don't force yourself to eat with bare hands. Bit painful (at least for me) to see LOL but if you guys did it just to feel how the locals doing it then I hope you liked it, just hoping that you can still enjoy the meal without being too messy with your hands :) I really appreciate all these videos that you both made. Great job and thank you so much :)

      The main reason why we eat with our hands is not for convenience tho. We eat with our hands because of the Islamic influence. The islam teaches it is sunnah to eat with ur hands. Islam being the dominant religion in the country, as the time progresses more and more non muslim people began to adapt this way of eating food and it became more a cultural thing.

    Really glad that you tried Batak food because as much as I love ouf local Medanese Malay, Chinese, and Indian dishes, you could probably find similar stuff in neighboring provinces / countries. Batak food is the true flavors of North Sumatra, along with Nias food (which is even more elusive). Next time please choose North Sumatran beans like Mandailing (or Mandheling for Westerners) to have the real flavors of the land. Is this the end of your culinary journey in Medan?

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Ari Vanuaranu, we loved it so much- it was very unique! We are very intrigued by Nias food now- I hope we can find some on our next visit. What types of dishes are they known for? Ahhhh on a different visit we sampled Mandailing beans- super delicious! @@ChasingaPlate unfortunately it's not easy to find Nias food even in Medan, I think there's that one place in Petisah. If you have the chance, go and try harinake (diced pork with spices), bavi niovuru (salt-cured pork), have them with fakhe nifalegu (crusty rice) or gowi nifufu (pounded sweet potato), and wash down with tuo nifare (palm wine). An avocado fruit costs about $2 each in Singapore. It's a super food and everyone should eat it often. Mexican avocadoes are the best, buttery and rich. The avocado shake you featured looks good except that dose of condensed milk and brown sugar syrup. I love following you guys on your travel vlogs with all your yummy eats. A pity I can't eat these foods as I've been diagnosed with breast cancer and I've to watch what I eat now. As I grapple with the side effects of chemotherapy, I watch you guys on you-tube to get respite from the ordeal. Seriously you are what you eat. Lifestyle without stress is equally important. I'm sure you both are having a great time, doing the things you want to do, travelling and eating your way around the world. Make sure you load up on lots of fruits/vege packed with anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory food to stay healthy during your travels. 😘

We're heading back to NZ for a couple of months to spend time with family and so that will be a good chance for us to do a lot more cooking and eating well! 😍 Hope you enjoy the content we have coming up A G- thanks for watching and commenting. Sorry to hear about your mom's cancer but I'm sure she has battled it bravely and is a victorious cancer survivor now. Good that you both can return home to New Zealand to recharge yourselves with good healthy home-cooked meals and rest so you can do greater things in the near future. I'd love to try that avocado shake, I wonder how the flavor profile would be with chocolate syrup, I would never think to combine those flavors as American. And that blood sausage intrigues me seen in many dishes, so spongy to absorb flavors. Does it have iron flavor?

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  6 лет назад +2

      Hi SuzyGrowsMyBiz, thanks for watching this one! That avocado shake was unreal! I couldn't believe how much avocado went in! We actually made a mistake and it was palm sugar syrup and not chocolate (some places do make it with chocolate though). I was a bit confused when eating it so didn't talk about the chocolate but I did mention a caramel taste and how sweet it was. In hindsight that was the palm sugar I was tasting. That was a really, really nice blood sausage. I'm a huge fan and that one has a lovely flavour of spices and no iron taste at all. The whole BPK meal was incredible! The reason was, as you can hear in the video, at 5:10 to 5:14 on the background there were the sound of one of the Indonesian online shopping company. It was its trademark sound and/or their notifications ringtone when used on the mobile application. The company held an event on the date that I mentioned where the customers with the app would shake their phones to get points, and with each point earned, it makes that signature sound.. so, yeah.. People in general eat with their eyes first. This begs the question...what has Indonesia been doing in all the time its been a populated country. It certainly hasnt been developing any visually appealing recipes or cooking methods. Indonesia ranks right up there with india as countries that have very unappealing dishes. I understand a persons palate will develop entirely different preferences based upon their culture and available ingrediemts, but thats some plain old ugly food. The final nail was the mention that the meat is sometimes substituted for dog meat (why you felt it was necessary to promote these facts in the video is beyond me). Talk about barbarism. Dogs and cats are more often than not literally boiled alive in these cases. Ive seen it with my own eyes. Any culture that does this has demonstrated the fact that they have not even begun to crawl out of the primordial soup where we all began. Disappointed that Thomas and Sheena would patronize any such region. Culture or not, boiling dogs and cats alive is a clear indication of low IQ, low development, inhumanity, lack of empathy, and just plain sick.

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  6 лет назад +4

      Hi nifepartie, thanks for watching and for your comment. In response to your first remarks about the food being visually unappealing, I believe beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I look at a monotone curry in India or say the noodle dish that we ate in this video and it might not be a pretty dish in the conventional sense but I get excited about the promise of the flavours which have so many people lining up to eat it. But, I feel nothing but disgust when I see people eating a burger with 5 patties, mountains of cheese and a stack of bacon when to many this is their idea of heaven. In response to the second part of your comment, Thomas and I would never eat dog or cat, nor promote this on our channel. I don't feel I was promoting the eating of dog by mentioning that the dish is often cooked using dog- it's just a fact and I think it would have been disingenuous of me not to mention it. Perhaps I could have been clearer that the particular restaurant we were eating at, only serves pork. I struggle with your remark that you're disappointed with us patronising a region in which the eating of dog takes place. For example, we believe that the slaughtering of whales by the Japanese government under the guise of science is a farce. Does it stop us travelling to Japan, no. But Thomas and I would never eat whale, nor promote the eating of whale on our channel. I do understand the strong stance you have on this issue and I wouldn't expect seeing such inhumane treatment of animals as you describe, to invoke anything other than a strong response from you. I do however hope you respect our point of view. Cheers, Sheena

      First regarding your prejudice by saying being a low iq by simply eating dog and cat meat. In western culture yes it is unethical and barbaric in nature but each culture have its own sense of which is right and wrong. and to say they have low iq just because of one thing its borderline ignorance of others culture and stupidity. And also what is the difference between eating dog meat and beef i can argue both are the same both are killing to say killing one thing are greater over the other are foolish.
      And second regarding unappealing food again its your personal preferences. we Indonesians usually dont care much about how the food looks
      And one last thing do you eat for the appearance or for the tastes. For me taste come first
      you don't need to answer this because from your comment i can guess the answer

    • @arivanuaranu
      @arivanuaranu 6 лет назад +4

      Most Indonesians see cats and dogs as pets and wouldn't dream of eating them, and most Indonesians are of the Islamic faith which forbids the consumption of these types of meat. But for some minority groups like the Bataks consuming them is part of the tradition. In Indonesia we are used to this kind of diversity so we can't really judge them. How is eating cats and dogs different from eating any other animals? Why are we outraged about eating dog meat, but not beef or pork? Unless you are a vegetarian or a vegan, you're nothing but a hypocrite.
