He was a hero. There were plots against Hitler way before the war started, however as the war progressed and people were concerned with that it became easier to organize and operate. Also people started to realize they were being lied to and that Hitler was killing and persecuting his own people
His grandfather is not only an example for Germany , but also for the world. A monument of Courage, patriotism and sens of responsability. Remember he was very handicaped physically. Despite that he went straight ahead. Chapeau!
Of course he can,his grandfather was a murderer who when the Germans started to lose ,decided to turn against his guru Hitler, typical german bullshitter( oops, sorry not German, since Germany is Bavaria, and the Germany exists since 18 hundreds,Brandenburgian)
Anil Kumar Suvvaru Venkata, I can definitely understand your point. Stauffenberg had never starved millions of people like Churchill did. Yet, he is still the bad guy simply because he's German. And he had chosen to side with the resistance even before the Stalingrad catastrophe, not just because the German was losing. Surely, he was not politically correct by our modern standard. However, if Churchill can be celebrated as a hero, why can't Stauffenberg who risked his life to save millions?
I just got back from Berlin where I visited the German Resistance Museum in the Bendlerblock bldg. where Col. Claus von Stauffenberg worked. It was the German Army office headquarters back then. After walking through the m any rooms and exhibits, which included his former office, I walked out into the courtyard where he and his 5 co-conspirators were shot by firing squad. It was incredibly moving to stand in that famous courtyard on the same cobblestones where he stood. It looks exactly as it appears in pictures of that time except for 6 identical trees which I assume were planted in memory of the 6 brave officers who tried to assassinate the most evil monster that ever existed. As I stood there, I wondered, "What were his final thoughts?" as he stood there with the blinding car headlights in his eyes waiting to be shot? So young, a loving husband and father who sacrificed his life to destroy such evil. What a HERO this man was! What BALLS it took to do what he did.
All the nazis were German patriots fighting for Germany,Stauffenberg wasa hardcore hitler supporter till the time when they started to lose the war, tgan like a weaseo they wanted to salvage anything they can.He hated the jews as much as Hitler,.
Actually he wasn't, you should do more reading on the subject. He in fact witnessed a massacre in Russia while serving as a staff officer and the experience deeply shocked him. It was from that point forward that he realised just what the Nazi's were capable of and he resolved to do something about it.
I think it was best said on The German Resistance Memorial Berlin 'You did not bear the shame, you resisted sacrificing your life for freedom, justice and honor.I have read books on Claus Von Stauffenberg, and watched the movie. Most appropriate of all is this quote: The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. Claus Von Stauffenberg and his equally brave associates tried to do something and it must always be remembered, for they knew if they failed what the terribly consequences would be. For if we don't study and learn from history, we have no future. I salute all those who took part in the attempt to get rid of Adolf Hitler,
My Uncle Eddie landed in southern France in 1944 and ended up in southern Germany in 1945. He commanded a Sherman tank, was in combat for 11 months, won a bronze star, was wounded twice, had 6 tanks shot out from under him, deliberately drove into an ambush to save his friends, liberated a concentration camp and got his crew home alive. My uncle was the definition of a real hero.
Holy moly! Upon first look, he has the old Tom cruise hair, but how much does he have some similar features to C. Reeve and someone... Much prayer, respect, admiration to his grandpapa RIP.
Whatever some people may write here, as a Russian, and as a grandson of someone who fought the war, I congratulate you on having such a heroic relative.
I read somewhere that Field Marshal Karl von Rundstedt, who frequently disagreed with Hitler, who was also dismissed by Hitler by calling him “ a fool”. And later was replaced by Rommel Von Rundstedt knew the plot, but he didn’t support the plot, but also did not tell anyone about it. He was approached by Rommel supposedly, but he didn’t think it would work. He was asked about the plot when he was in British custody after the war. He thought Stauffenberg and Beck was naive. The army wouldn’t necessarily just follow Stauffenberg and Beck even if Hitler was assassinated.
of course his father looks like the mother side of the family, how could the genes of a women married with Claus von Stauffenberg not be stronger than Stauffenbergs genes himself xd It needs "at least" second genneration^^
In desperate time desperate measures must be taken by extraordinarily brave men and women to sacrifice themselves for something far greater than themselves in the name of humanity. Colonel Von Stauffenberg was that person and is a hero in the eyes of the world.
"Can an Officer have a loyalty to anything greater than his country? First, he must answer the question 'What is my Country- and does it still EXIST'" From a movie called The Exception, about the Kaiser during his exile WWII period.
Valkyrie is a very good movie. Cruise did a first rate job and his supporting cast is excellent. Stauffenberg was Germany's guardian angel. He was the only man known to have stared down Adolf Hitler. Pure good vs. pure evil. Check out Peter Hoffmann's book on the brothers Stauffenberg or Joachim Kramarz's work. "Es lebe unser heiliges Deutschland!"
The problem with the Tom Cruise movie Valkyrie is that it takes the bullshit Hollywood approach of suspense and focused way too much on the assassination plot. The assassination plot is not interesting because we already know Hitler was not killed; nothing is a surprise. Adding to that, Von Stauffenberg is a flat character. The movie should have been about WHY Von Stauffenberg decided it was necessary to assassinate Hitler. Why did such a powerful, aristocratic man do this? Valkyrie also only appeals to the typical brain dead audience; being driven by suspense and all being in English.
Michael Akkerman you are right however even if you may know that Hitler survive , you don't know how it was made how the whole operation was carried out and how closed they were to successfully kill Hitler , this elements can create a certain atmosphere of suspense in the film and they tried to exploite that using the point of view of the plotters
Neither did many of the BRITISH actors. So your point is? I hate Tom Cruise with a passion, however, I'll give him that he gave one of his most contained performances.
No film is ever perfect in its depiction, however, if a film like this does anything it serves as a sketch to those who want to know more to actually open up a history book or eighty in order to learn the more intricate details as I did with the Russian Revolution after watching the film "Nicholas and Alexandra". I love the film "Black Hawk Down" but as the technical commentary on the bluray said, those being MSGT Matt Eversmann, Lee Van Arsdale, Danny McKnight and Tom Matthews who all were active participants in the events in Mogadishu, no film could accurately depict what it was like on the ground and in the air on October 3rd, 1993. However, what Ridley Scott and crew did was give an encapsulated version of those events. If anyone wants to investigate further, as I did, go read the book Mark Bowden, or go and look at the documentaries that are included on the third disc on the home video release. There's a ton of background material on the home video release of "Valkyrie". Hate to have to say this but no audience member is interested in the hows and whys someone in Von Stauffenberg's position took the position he did to act why he did except it is stated in the film that he was tired of the losses Germany as undergoing at the time. All those losses were due to Hitler and his "team's" gross mismanagement of the war. All of those involved in the July Plot were tired of war. Plain and simple. They wanted to get Hitler out of the way in order to begin negotiations with the West to end the war. I think the film spelled that out pretty clearly. If you can't or don't understand that, then I have to wonder what film you were actually watching. Because I understood it perfectly.
couldn't agree more! A darker and morally ambiguous Stauffenberg would be awesome. Nowadays, people love anti-hero and Stauffenberg can fit into that kind of role. A conflicted soldier with a war going on in his mind. However, this film is from 10 years ago.
Claus von Stauffenberg was one of the greatest of the greats. The movie was fine for what it was - showing the events leading up to the July plot. It was not meant to be a study of the multifaceted character of Claus, so it should not be judged on that basis.
I never heard Tom Cruise referred to as "Thomas" before I suppose that probably is his full name though. He had wanted to do more promotion for this film but tragically John Travoltas son had just died around the same time it premiered so Tom opted to go to the funeral and comfort his friend John instead.
The movie Valkyrie was a very good film and it wastrue to the events in real life and Col Von Stauffenberg is a hero and was a good man. RIP. "They'll Remember You".
@mikey1011mikey Yes, just like his granddad. when you look at the historical pictures, there was something about him - even with the eyepatch. This grandson of his is also very clever - one can see it in his eyes. Also his English is awesome. I would never guess - apart from the accent - that he is a German. he speaks so fluently. Is he married..? LOL
You're right.... But I wonder if you know the Nazis didn't know their place. They didn't obey rules of war they killed without question (mostly SS did that) the German Navy didn't know their place either I'm from the U.S. and our history books has taught us that Nazi U-boats were near shores preying on transports. Though I don't blame them for this we basically did same thing to Japan.
His grandfather was a hero of eminence strength of character, and should be remembered as such.
He had flaws like believing the enslavement of Poland was their right. But yes a profile in strength and courage.
@@williambrock3534 I think that was at first

his grandfather was a hero
He would have been a hero had he attempted to kill him in 1940 when all Germans were Nazis as they were winning the war.

He certainly was.
