best version. Also thanks so much this video and tab has taken my playing to the next level. So many challenges in this song with the left hand, that every other old blues song is easier now
Yes, Stefan Grossman, thank you so much. Would love to see you playing your new signature edition Martin. I love my Madagascar Martin and look forward to playing your model.
This is how lve always wanted to play. Taj Mahall andJorma Kaukonen introduced me to tjis 30 years ago.Roy Bookbinder is another guy who exells at this type very expressive playing.l was lucky to meet all these guys Duck you are in rare company.
Holy smoke! The best playing I've seen in a long time! Thanks for the lesson (but after seeing this I think I'll sell my instruments and go back to my daytime job...).
Yeah, go for it! I have always dreamed of owing one too. They start from 12 k at the moment (I'd bet this is a Brazilian rosewood Franklin, and I think it is/was owned by Stefan Grossman). Anyway, Duck is truly great, it is a pity he plays mostly nylon string guitar nowadays.
Mississippi John Hurt plays his own Unquie style for that time period he lived in, and I read his guitar is tuned in open G chord, while listening to a few of those guys from that time, their guitar playing sounds kind of flat to add another dimension to their bluesy sound. That's just my observation. I have been listening to MJH for ages now and play along with him, but I can't keep up with his brilliant style, he's the master.
@@matthewp3709 the song is in the key of C and the tuning is standard. The lowest string is an E. The lowest C he plays is third fret on the A string. He calls it the people key of C because lots of music is in C because it is easy to understand musically
This is totally frustrating for a relative beginner- after a LONG intro it all moves so fast with no proper explanation of the fingers or order of them used in plucking
Nice try but, not even close. i mean, emulating MJH is practically impossible, IMHO. His ability to create the complex rhythms with the tight and flowing lead is simply unmatched.
Best version I've heard of this
Agree, thats why i hang here.....
Duck Baker is one of a handful of guys who plays these tunes with any emotion. I love it.
The best version of this song i'v ever heard thank you Duck Baker.
Well looks like I've got the next 5 years of my life planned out for me now.
So can you play at least half of this or what?
1 year left!
And how did it go?
Jonathan Stewart How it go?
Op pls
man he really plays that brilliantly
Great song for improvising indeed, and an excellent lesson... thank you Mr Duck Baker! You show there is a lot of music in that first position!
best version. Also thanks so much this video and tab has taken my playing to the next level. So many challenges in this song with the left hand, that every other old blues song is easier now
Just when I'm coasting on a light breeze along comes a wind that reminds me what my wings are for and how just flapping them makes me feel alive!...
"but up n'ent, prospector, you sprout all your worth and you woof your wings, so if you want to be Phoenixed, come and be parked."
this is the most impressive version of this song ive ever heard. I absolutely love it
Duck puts the swing in this hundred year old classic.
Thanks for posting. Really sweet arranging--and explaining--of the variations.
Absolutely incredible.
I can only say Brilliant thank you so much I just hope I manage to play it half as good. Well done David.
Shaking my head in amazement! What a wonderful job brother!
Awesome video! Discouraging to realize how far away i am but great to watch. Thanks.
great lesson; love Mississippi John's tricks- thank you
Mississippi John Hurt's style is the most fun you can have on a guitar.
Yes, Stefan Grossman, thank you so much. Would love to see you playing your new signature edition Martin. I love my Madagascar Martin and look forward to playing your model.
Absolutely stunning !
Duck Baker is one of the great fingerstyle players of this century.

Simple first position chords? Ya but you're doing backflips with em.
Right!!!!
No kidding
Beautiful playing!

Round 6 - 2:50
Round 7 - 3:09
Round 8 - 3:26
Brilliant video lesson .Thank you David
Well done. Very good, complete, easy to see, not too much yakking (so often the case on these vids).
Love it. Thanks and congratulations.
yep really hate the taking on most videos
Playing this good Mississippi John hurts!
That's some mighty fine picking!
I just went to Guitar Heaven. My God that is so beautiful.
Always loved this tune and like others Duck does it the best. Also being a fan of Jelly Roll Morton I like the lick he uses too. Thank you
Great fingerstyle play and tone..
Holy smoke! The best playing I've seen in a long time! Thanks for the lesson (but after seeing this I think I'll sell my instruments and go back to my daytime job...).
And I had just "mastered" a baby version of the glorious song. Back to woodshed I go.
Outstanding
I love this video!!! thanks
A FAVORITE SONG OF MINE!

Dam this guy has chops!

I hate it when these people make it look so easy!
wow! nice! thanks!
*raises glass* cheers!

A=432Hz instead of the modern A=440Hz. John played standard tuning in this song I believe
I thought he said “in the people’s key of c” in the beginning
… which I think is like a dropped c bass string with the rest of the strings in standard. Maybe ??
@@matthewp3709 the song is in the key of C and the tuning is standard. The lowest string is an E. The lowest C he plays is third fret on the A string. He calls it the people key of C because lots of music is in C because it is easy to understand musically
@@cameronwynn6341 yeah you’re right. The original MJH version is in G though
Play for 5 years every day with proper practice regime and then watch this video and learn from a master.
Really good. The improvisation was nice and it didn't interfere with the momentum of the song.
You look like Napoleon Dynamite! Haha good lesson thanks!!
skip to 6:50 if you want to start learning
play from beginning if u just want to enjoy
Duck gets a good head of steam up.
wow.
The funk makes it interesting.
sounds a bit like "When I'm 64" This is really cool
Flatpicking takes talent. I've seen guys who can whip a flatpick around like they have 3.
please show the patterns of right hand !! thanks
Brain on sideways now! !0.0!
1:16
good video
however could you please post some flat picking style videos for us less talented people who can't finger pick
thanks
It takes about 10 minutes to learn alternating bass. Really.
hahaa förjävlig version :D
I love DB's sound - he's got impressive technique but with just the amount of dirt and grit mixed in
this is in standard tuning right?
yes
john hurt's style doesn't really lend itself to flatpicking too well
Aww man I thought this was Donald 'Duck' Dunn..
YOU LIAR !! Just kidding. NIce job.
You Play it 10 times better than John Hurt. lol
Don't be so MODEST.
This is totally frustrating for a relative beginner- after a LONG intro it all moves so fast with no proper explanation of the fingers or order of them used in plucking
would it kill you to smile?

Did you copy that out of a magazine? I hope you don't really talk like that.
