made a shittily edited podcast with my best friend about this show that dropped around the same time last year. Yours is much more well-made, I see the flaws in my designs. This show is fuckin incredible, and it's a tragedy what happened to it. The creators recently pitched a continuation of sorts, Gus and Wally. WB denied it and denied them the rights to use the characters, for no reason. WB will never do anything with this. They're evil. Edit: I posted at the start of the video, i was just excited to see another in depth analysis of mission hill.
I didn't watch the whole season or get really into it but I liked Mission Hill when I was a kid. I mean I was in the age range of late teens when it came out. I used to watch Bevis and Butthead and Daria and this was on around when they were. Funny enough I never watched Mission Hill on any channel but MTV I just forgot about it when it went to WB.
Favorite exchange on this show has to be Gus and Wally's argument about condoms. To this day the line "You cheap gay bastard, these will fly right off" lives rent free and never fails to make my smile
Mine is when the boy is cheating on the SAT's and he offers his friend a copy of the answers and his friend says, "I've been waiting my whole life to be tempted by the Dark Side. _I reject you!"_
Why tf were they using condoms if they're monogamous? It's not like wally is gonna get pregnant. And I doubt either one has anything serious to spread. They seem very healthy for their age.
I started watching Daria on Hulu and I absolutely fell in love with it. This show definitely tops that from what I’ve seen and I’m right between gen z/millennials, not gen x.
We got robbed that this show didn't get more seasons. Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein working together were one of the best duos in the entire history of tv comedy animation and it's a shame we never got to see more from them with this show. They took everything they learned from The Simpsons and carried it over. They both did work together for the first 4 seasons of Futurama as writers which also explains why the writing was so good in that show as well
I like to think Mission Hill is in Andy's perspective, and he's the one that made and animated this whole show based off his life. And honestly even today I don't see very many (or good) shows for th age demographic that Mission Hill was targeting.
I think that was the plan. The show was supposed to a series arc in which Andy moves up in the cartooning world and eventually he starts an animated series based on his life in the last episode. Would've been so good.
The age demographic thing is true. They all come off as really bad attempts to pander and just hope their audience is dumb enough to watch, while this show actually had heart, and soul.
Closest more modern series I can think of is Regular Show, which was clearly aiming to be relatable to a similar crowd of disillusioned late teen to 20 something slackers.
I’m glad somebody (people) remember Mission Hill. This show was and still is a beautiful indies that will forever be placed in my heart. Along with The Oblongs.
Mission Hill is definitely one of those "killed to early by the network" shows which is way to common, especially with adult animation. There is still a strong "cartoons are for kids" bias out there even though adult animation has been around the whole time.
This show was on when I was so little that it always felt like a fever dream and it’s always had a special place in my heart after finding out what it really was.

I love urban based shows/cartoons. Cartoons like The Critic, The PJ's, Hey Arnold and This Beautiful Show really hold a special place in my heart. Outside of Hey Arnold! I grew up on Cartoon Network/Adult Swim (ALL KIDS OUT OF THE POOL ERA) Shows like ed,edd, eddy were hilarious but seeing characters living in the suburbs wasn't relatable, same with Home Movies. (Coach McGurk is the shit) I really love the commentary on this DVD. The creators were gonna have everyone grow older over the seasons like real people, and continue to have real world/slice of life issues just like most of the stuff present in this show already. I really wish there was more cartoons like what I mentioned above or rather just more Adult Animators willing to take this kind of risk again.
I was 25 when this was released. I was deep into embracing the gen x slacker vibe. I felt this show was made for me. It's good to find out I was the intended audience. I wondered what happened to this show. I watched the Wayne's Brothers, the Jaime Fox and Steve Harvey Shows.
for what it's worth if WOM ever see this, i was a teen girl who loved this show when it was airing on adult swim and still do re-watch it from time to time.
I remember 2008, staying up all night on my computer with Adult Swim on in the background. Any time I'd hear that theme song I'd drop whatever I was doing and take a break to watch Mission Hill.
Gus and Wally are a perfect example of good representation, an elderly gay couple down to earth with ups and downs, not played just for comedic purposes, not being "the odd ones". Just living their everyday life.
Thank you so much for uploading this! I am Canadian, and this aired on "teletoon" all on a block with undergrads, oblongs, clone high.......and I had just graduated high school with my girlfriend, and both got accepted into animation school....(her family also took me in, and we lived together whilst we finished highschool). But then we broke up, and I still moved to Toronto (our plan to go to school) but I went and worked in a factory, and met a girl who was a radio DJ....... This show felt like my life at the time....again, thank you so much!!!!!
Thank you for reminding me of this show. Also, why isn't your channel bigger? The thought, care, and effort you put into these videos is noticeable immediately. What is wrong with people.... subscribe to this man!

It’s kinda sad. I just started rewatching all of the episodes and the show still holds up today. I think it was the right show at the wrong time.
This is one of my favorite shows ever and I'm upset to see your video has so few views and likes. Bring Mission Hill back! it was a masterpiece and deserves so much more love than it gets. Thank your for doing the work that you do and talking about how incredible this show is.

True story I used to live in Mission Hill in Boston, this is how I stumbled across this show, googling local info. I must say it has one of the most realistic portrayals of 20 something urban life. Truly ahead of its time
45:32 is so beautifully said! This cartoon will always hold a special place in my heart, being a little kid sneakily watching adult swim when my parents went to bed hehe. I'm now dying to get my hands on some mission hill art! #gusandwally
Hahaha! I’m living Mission Hill life now. I’m living with my Sister in an NYC apartment. We’re all trying to get ahead in life. I am the younger sister who came down from upstate New York living with my parents.
35:08 I totally agree. I give mad props to adult swim for picking up both Mission Hill & The Oblongs in 2002. Had it not been for that network giving the shows a chance, I believe they certainly would have been lost to history.
Just wanted to call out your absolute taste in using the Ghost Trick OST for some of your backing music. This show is truly amazing, thanks for going into depth about its production with this great video!
Great video! I'm kind of annoyed the algorithm took so long to recommend it to me. I was within the target demographic of Mission Hill when it was on, and I absolutely loved it. I never understood why such a top-notch show got such a short lifespan, or why it seems to have made so little impact that no one ever talks about it. I watch a lot of channels that are about pop culture analysis, including channels specifically about animation, and not only have I never seen a full retrospective on it before, I'm not sure any of them have ever brought it up at all. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who even remembers this thing existed. Thank you for a very entertaining and informative 49 minutes on a deep cut from my personal youthful nostalgia. The few years of 1998-2003 gave us some truly incredible cartoons that didn't last very long but I still love - Mission Hill, the Oblongs, Downtown, Clone High, Undergrads.
As someone who was alive during the time, the reason that people disliked it was Andy. Many people loved him but, less than those who hated the character.
Mission Hill and The Oblongs were absolute best thing on television that happened to me as a confused queer kid. Growing up in conservative family in Russia, suddenly I was blasted with beautiful animations on “2x2” channel that bought licenses to air a lot of old cartoons from Fox, CN and others. Mission Hill actually helped me to understand a lot of things about sexuality, emotions, first love, and Oblongs taught me about consequences of being “the other one”, being alone and dealing with it and realizing that home is where you belong, not where you’re from - and grow into a woman I am now. Thank you for that essay, man, revisiting those memories was really great.
One of my all time favorites. So underrated. I actually had a funny convo with my brother about it the other day how they could bring the show back, but scale it up a bit. I know you always run the risk of ruining the charm of the original show, but the idea of Andy in his 30's trying to hold onto his youth while Kevin in college trying to be a success while trying not to be lame sounds like an awesome idea imo.
This unlocked such a big core memory for me! I’ve never seen anyone else talk about Mission Hill so this video was a total delight. Absolutely amazing and you got an instant follow from me! Perhaps a Welcome to Eltingville vid could be in the future?
fun fact: nick jameson was briefly a musician for foghat, and was even their producer for decades. he actually played the bassline on their signature track “slow ride”.
Always thought it was weird, I never saw this on WB, despite having watched other WB Adult Animation like Baby Blues and The Oblongs. And the 2-episode run makes it seem easy to miss, but I managed to catch Clerks on ABC.
If I was rich, I'd make my own damn network where I could revive shows like Mission Hill, Ugly Americans, and the Oblongs. All great, creative, original shows that deserved full, complete runs.
As a 16 year old who has been watching Mission Hill since I was around 5-7 years old, it made me so happy to see someone else loves this show just as much as I do. I was very sad when I looked up the pilot episode on RUclips and found out they replaced the song "Burning Flies" by Looper after Gwen asks out Andy. I think that song matched this show perfectly.
This show was legitimately the best, the animation was fantastic, the storyline had me hooked at 12 yrs old on the first episode, plus a banger of a soundtrack. And back in the day nobody knew about mission Hill, Adult Swim was so new....
Aww man this was so well made my man! Thank you for this! Just thought about Mission Hill the other day and went back to binging the first season. Such a great show ❤
I loved this show. I just recently revisited it and it truly was a tradegy that it was killed before it's time. Great video! Seriously. You filled that need I have for more Mission Hill.
I STILL can't believe Kevin's bling blong noise came from a real person LOL Still cute how Scott Menville did those. They should've made an episode of Kevin's bling blong phrase having some sort of "malfunction"
Man Mission Hill was a show when I was a kid I just didn’t get and didn’t like especially when it was an adult swim. But now when I grew up, and I went to college, about to graduate, I started watching Mission Hill and undergrads more and more, and found that they are just hidden gems of their time. Truly unique shows with unique art styles. Like you could tell this was 90s 2000 content.
I loved this show. It reminded me of what it was like when, at the age of 17, I moved to the city to live with my brother and go to university. I was a sheltered nerd and he and his friends were... partiers. It was a world I was not prepared for.
Here's a fun fact, Andy did meet Bill and Josh. Towards the end of the first episode when Andy comes out to check on Kevin(The Grubermiester), Bill and Josh can be seen sitting on the couch with Bill asking "What's he saying?" before leaving the apartment Also your video was fantastic, really gave me a deeper appreciation for a show I already loved and I'm glad to see someone else enjoys Plan 9 from Mission Hill as much as I do, easily my favorite episode
41:08 has a noticeable drop in volume on your commentary track. If you can fix it you definitely should; This “retrospective” seems to have just as much love put into it as the show proper. This show more than any other turned me into the man I am today so I love seeing others understanding it’s brilliance.
a lot of this show's content and humor went over my head as a kid but i still absolutely loved watching it, the chill vibe and cool art style were so appealing even if i didn't always know what they were talking about
Mission Hill was easily one of my favorite turn of the century shows that fell into obscurity but thankfully Adult Swim was where I watched it - also, dunno what landed me on this channel but I'm diggin' the whole chilled back nature of your channel.
The color scheme on Mission Hill was one of the last shows to use magenta colors on television. Magenta was realized to trigger seizures in people, which is why it is no longer used. At least that's what I understood from the bonus feature.
My fave Mission Hill moment is when they make a fake night club and set up a velvet rope and carpet. Then everybody is waiting in line and the clipboard guy is like "...the baby" and the baby gets to go into the club😂
I don't think I saw this when it first aired, but when it made its way up here on Teletoon, I was in my early 20s so it spoke to me. Along with Clone high and Undergrads, it was a great time for indie adult cartoons!
This show was ahead of the curve in everything. - young adult humor - cartoon style - musical taste - voice acting - serialized plots So of course, like Freaks and Geeks, it was only allowed to last one season
Putting them in front of Wayan's Bros, Jamie Foxx and Steve Harvey is how I found this show. It wasn't what I was used to, but it was the first adult cartoon I had ever seen, and it still stands up today! Loved this thing!
Wonderful video! You really understand what made this show so special! Bad news on the "Gus and Wally" front, however. I went to a live Q&A with Oakley and Weinstein and they confirmed it got turned down because HBO was "looking for something to compete with South Park". If thats not a statement about the state of our entertainment industry, I don't know what is.
Amazing video, man. I completely forgot this show existed, but I loved it back in the day. Thanks for reminding me and providing so much information I never knew about.

❤
Mark my words. This show will come back someday
Unfortunately, quite a few songs had to be changed for the DVD release
This show was legitimately the best, the animation was fantastic, the storyline had me hooked at 12 yrs old on the first episode, plus a banger of a soundtrack. And back in the day nobody knew about mission Hill, Adult Swim was so new....
...I just bought this on DVD, and now this shows up on my feed...
I'm so happy this show has gotten some attention, great work!
Easily my favorite vid of yours thus far. I remember this show fondly, and you really did a good dive onto what made it good.
Thanks a lot for sparing the time to watch! It was such a massive project, but Mission Hill deserved the love.
@@BradleySmithRUclips Oh it definitely deserved it. I didn’t realize how “modern” it was in its content. Really loving the old media deep dive.
Hope this does well, glad somebody doing the good work of spreading the mission hill love.
Thank you, Atticus! I am Boo Radley Smith
18:40 omg thank you thank you thank you! This man's voice has burned into my brain for years but I can never remember his name or where I'd heard it!
Mission Hill is my favorite show of all time. I really hope they come through with the sequel!
Damn, I remember one sleepless night I turned on adult swim and caught this show. Pretty good. Wish it lasted longer.
Nice, can tell by the background music you're a fan of Hotel Dusk. It's literally one of my favorite games
Mission Hill is one of those shows that needed more seasons, like Downtown and Undergrads.
I’m so glad others like this show
I loved this show. It reminded me of what it was like when, at the age of 17, I moved to the city to live with my brother and go to university. I was a sheltered nerd and he and his friends were... partiers. It was a world I was not prepared for.
This is a gem, thank you for preserving it.
Excellent video! One of the few cartoons that never compromised its integrity and remained brutally honest and funny throughout its entirety.
Randomly thought of this show today. Searched here on yt and found this. Good stuff man 👍
I loved this show. My favorite line is when the pimp throws his back out and says to Posey "Please help me, Bitch" lmao
Here's a fun fact, Andy did meet Bill and Josh. Towards the end of the first episode when Andy comes out to check on Kevin(The Grubermiester), Bill and Josh can be seen sitting on the couch with Bill asking "What's he saying?" before leaving the apartment
Also your video was fantastic, really gave me a deeper appreciation for a show I already loved and I'm glad to see someone else enjoys Plan 9 from Mission Hill as much as I do, easily my favorite episode
41:08 has a noticeable drop in volume on your commentary track. If you can fix it you definitely should; This “retrospective” seems to have just as much love put into it as the show proper. This show more than any other turned me into the man I am today so I love seeing others understanding it’s brilliance.
As a preteen girl, Mission Hill absolutely appealed to me, but I can't claim my taste is universal. 😅
Thank-you for an awesome video about one of my favorite shows from back in the day!!!
a lot of this show's content and humor went over my head as a kid but i still absolutely loved watching it, the chill vibe and cool art style were so appealing even if i didn't always know what they were talking about
Good stuff, Brad. This was a major undertaking, I can tell.
Really means a lot! 🙏
Mission Hill was easily one of my favorite turn of the century shows that fell into obscurity but thankfully Adult Swim was where I watched it - also, dunno what landed me on this channel but I'm diggin' the whole chilled back nature of your channel.
I loved watching this on adult swim still love rewatching it as well
I was just thinking about this show recently and couldn't remember what it was called
Thanks for all this!
If Clone High could get a new season, so could Mission Hill.
Mission Hill is a highly underrated series. The Real World and The Man from Pluto episodes are the very best.
The cancelation of Mission Hill is proof that we're in the wrong timeline.
This show was ahead of the curve in everything.
- young adult humor
- cartoon style
- musical taste
- voice acting
- serialized plots
So of course, like Freaks and Geeks, it was only allowed to last one season
Putting them in front of Wayan's Bros, Jamie Foxx and Steve Harvey is how I found this show. It wasn't what I was used to, but it was the first adult cartoon I had ever seen, and it still stands up today! Loved this thing!
Wonderful video! You really understand what made this show so special! Bad news on the "Gus and Wally" front, however. I went to a live Q&A with Oakley and Weinstein and they confirmed it got turned down because HBO was "looking for something to compete with South Park". If thats not a statement about the state of our entertainment industry, I don't know what is.
I still Bling Blong to this day
Amazing video, man. I completely forgot this show existed, but I loved it back in the day. Thanks for reminding me and providing so much information I never knew about.
I remember watching this show when it was airing on tv and loved it
Great video, and deep dive on such a great TV show! I'm glad to see that I'm not alone at loving Mission Hill. I recently found your channel, and am really digging your content.
I've been trying to remember this show for years, thank God this was in the recommended section
