Instant classic. What a great groove. First time I heard Baxter I was a little worried that he'd hide under his dad's shadow but with time I have found that he is a unique, creative character of his own. This track proves it perfectly.

Only found Baxter`s music in the last couple of weeks. `Slumlord` drew me in when I saw the surname..a famous one, of course. Also love `Miami`, and `Carla`s got a boyfriend`, in particular. This fresh fusion of catchy grooves, a distinctive hook, humour and that voice..sublime. Reminds me of his father, but also of ( for instance)Leonard Cohen ( Gravelly voice, ethereal high female backing..even some French!), and many other influences going back decades. Think Baxter Dury is going to take off....

It's like 70s/80s Leonard Cohen with some real sense of humor. Groovy, cool, with a delicious amount of self-irony... I really think I've found my new favorite artist.

I had no idea that this fella is Ian Durys son. It makes a lot more sense now. Very similar sound really. To be honest , I like him a lot more now.

It does indeed sound like 'Let's Dance'...that's because of the rhythm of the bass
It's because of the echo in the cowbell or whatever that is, along with bass cadence and guitar.
These three elements are the most distinctive ones in Let's Dance and appear together in Slumlord.

Got the album last year but it always takes a while for a Baxter Dury album to 'bed in' with me. Absolutely love it now. Also, this video is terrific, funky and sleazy - those dance moves are something else.
