    Excellent modification Rob. The manufacturers should send out some prototypes for
    field testing before they go in to production. Cheers Nobby

      Hi Nobby. Yes, classic oversight by the maker with those wheels sticking out so much. OK for grass I expect, but not for workshop use. Maybe they should sell two versions. Cheers Rob

    I have the same unit, and never thought of modifying it until seeing this. Thanks for the video.

    Clearly the way it should have been built. Nice product development Rob.

      Yes, it was trying to fit all scenario's, but fell short where it was most needed. Easy mod for a big improvement. Cheers Rob

    Nice mod Rob 👍👍👍 Like you say I expect that they put the larger wheels on so that it can be used in grass. No need for them to be such a sloppy fit though! Cheers, Alan.

      @Xynudu  Год назад +1

      Hi Alan. Yes, the fit was sloppy as. No excuse for that sort of situation as it's not even cost dependent. LOL. Anyway, all good now and I'm happy with it. Cheers Rob

    Good work on the mod Rob. That looks like it will work a treat around your shop. I was using my new lathe today and I thought about this magnetic sweeper when I had to sweep up the chips on the floor. I really need to make one...

      Hi Jon. They really clean up any ferrous mess extremely well. Saves a lot of time. Having the two sizes is a good thing. Of course aluminium will always be a hassle and requires the vacuum. I pretty much stopped using a broom as it needs a smooth surface to work well. Something worth making and not expensive. Plenty of options regarding design and functionallity to chose from. Cheers Rob

    Personally I'd be inclined to mount the wheels behind & pick up a bit more clearance.

    • @Xynudu
      @Xynudu  Год назад

      Yes, that's a better way. That's how I did it when I built the original blue magnetic broom.

    I bet the company that makes these will steal your design improvements. Smaller (less expensive wheels) + shorter axial bolt = cost saving = more profit & more utility & happier customers + happier shareholders. 👋👋👋
    When cutting off a bolt, keep a nut on the thread that you can use to straighten out the threads by simply removing it.
    Also, the inside nut doesn't need to be so wide. You could shave that down half as wide if you don't have a thinner one the same size. You'd gain maybe a half to a quarter inch of clearance? Next mod: ROOMBA the darned thing.

    • @Xynudu
      @Xynudu  Год назад +1

      Yes, it would certainly save money and make for a better product. Good tip about having a nut in place to clean the thread. My father showed me that one many years ago. Using a die grinder and very thin cut off discs gives a much cleaner cut and no thread distortion. Way to go. Cheers Rob

      @@Xynudu While we're at it the wheel profile needn't be shaped like capital I
      ][-=====-][ When a shape like a cup
      [-=====-] would be even better.
      since it would be just as effective and take up less width.

      Yes. I think the Chinese just use a lot of off the shelf parts to keep the cost down. Definitely could have been better for less. Such is life. Cheers Rob

    Nice mod. Wish you'd explained how the release mechanism worked though.

    • @Xynudu
      @Xynudu  Год назад +4

      The magnets are located on a bar and rest on the aluminium box floor. When the top handle is lifted it pulls the magnets away from the aluminium base and weakens the magnetic attraction to the metal particles on the other side of the aluminium. Simple.

    • @danceswithaardvarks3284
      @danceswithaardvarks3284 Год назад

      Thanks Rob.. Simples eh. I have one of the ones that looks like a metal detector to get into tight spots. I put it in a plastic bag to capture the chips and filings, but an aluminium plate that pivots would be a much better solution.

    • @Xynudu
      @Xynudu  Год назад +3

      I see VEVOR do one of those and wondered why they didn't put a removable plastic cap over the magnet so the chips would fall away like your plastic bag when it was removed. Seems so obvious. The probe type slide the magnet away from the plastic or aluminium end of a tube to achieve the same result. They are mainly meant to pick up chips from machinery, but I don't like the idea as you could easily magnetise parts of the machine (which would be a real bastard), so I only use the vacuum or paper towels for that job. Cheers Rob

    The bigger wheels were designed for rolling in the grass.
