  • Known fault in BMW's. AC stops cooling because Denso Evaporator leaks refrigerant R134a to the cabin.
    Very labor intensive repair.

    Mine is leaking. I can't believe the job. I thought my 1985 &35i A/C was the worst design in the world. Nope.

    Amazing video. You Have inspired me to do this job myself. I was getting the telltale smells through my vents and when I went into BMW for an airbag recall they confirmed that my evaporator was leaking. I have ordered the part and have my trim removal tools ready! My question is; are there any other parts that I should order (like o-rings on evap to engine bay connections, grommets, etc.)? It would be great to know this ahead of time. Thanks!

    That was an amazing video, I used your video as guide to replace my evaporator, reference for all friends, I was able to complete this job in about 16 hours, also about Denso or Valeo well my compressor is Denso, but for some reason my evaporator was Valeo, i know weird.
    again thank you so much for the video, also excellent music.

    • @sceyon
      @sceyon 4 года назад +2

      @Scruffy the heater core and evaporator core come out with the whole hvac unit, so of course the heater hoses have to be disconnected. You could pinch off the hoses and drain the core before removing the unit, however it can sometimes be tricky bleeding the cooling system on BMWs without performing a complete drain and fill because the ideal way to fill it is vac-n-fill.

    Really nice video... but too much work to do... i have bmw 328i coupe 2013 and i am facing really big issues regarding A/C. Changed compressor 3 times , condenser once and plenty of more stuff but still the same issue. A/C will work OK not great first few days and then in hot summers specially it will start and stops (mix of Cold and normal air ) and specially when the car stops it will blow normal air... i am really pissed off with my BMW its a pain :( but from your video i guess it could be evaporator... i wish i could do this job by myself but i dont have space and doing it in the garage without AC will be suicide with 48 degrees... :(

    Did you also replace the expansion valve? I saw when you took it off but
    When your evap failed... Did it smell different inside your car cabin? Like a short circuited or burned electronic smell?
    Thanks!

      Sorry late reply... no I didn't replace the expansion valve. All gaskets looked fine. And actually did not smell anything, just lost the cool air from the vents.. (because pressure loss and low on Refrigerant)

    • @TKR-videos

      There must be few screws left somewhere. Usually TIS shows all of them with arrows in pictures. Try www.newtis.info

  • @st8kout961
    @st8kout961 6 лет назад

    After all that I would have sprung for a brand new evap.
    Alternatively, drive it up to Alaska/Canada and try to sell it there where they don't need an A/C. I haven't determined why mine is only blowing cool but not cold yet, but it IS a '97 528i, so I suppose I got my money's worth out of it after 21 years living in the Deep South using it almost everyday.
    Back in the 70s I added an A/C to my Camaro as an under dash unit. That might almost be worth it for an older BMW.

    Nice work! Was there any part of the job that didn't make sense according to the manual, something that didn't want to come out or was really difficult to access? If it's just labor, not cursing and pissed off labor, it's much more fun lol

    • @TKR-videos
      @TKR-videos  5 лет назад

      I don't recall anything that would involve severe cursing. You'll just need to follow the instructions and be patient to go step by step.. and it will feel disturbing to look your car without the dash. lol. Also be careful not to spill remaining coolant all over when pulling the "main unit" out of the car..

    In your opinion, if you were to pull out the steering column while leaving the dash in place could you get to the heater core? Because the heater core slides in sideways and the steering column blocks it. Is something preventing you from going that route?
