There are peacock goats at Hirschstetten Zoo in Vienna. Markus Domanegg, zoological director of Hirschstetten Flower Gardens, introduces the endangered goat breed.

This special breed of goat has only been known since the late 19th century. At that time, they were called the Praettigauer goat. Over time these goats have been called many different things. They “owe” their most common name to a spelling error: because of their facial coloring, they were called "Pfaven" goats. However, the letters v and u are very similar. This is how the "Pfavenziege" became the "Pfauenziege", which means Peacock goat.
Therefore, it is not at all surprising that these goats have nothing in common with peacocks. However, lovers of this breed refer to them as "works of art in black and white". At least the circle closes somehow, because peacocks are ultimately viewed as works of art, too.
Peacock goats not only have special markings but are also all-terrain and robust. In terms of use, the goat is an all-rounder, which makes it increasingly difficult for it to find a place in agriculture that relies on high-performance breeds. However, it can still be used well as a leading animal for goat herds.
What made matters worse was that from the late 1930s onwards it was suddenly no longer considered a breed worthy of support. Luckily, the goats had friends in Graubuenden, where they were able to survive with a few breeders. Things still looked bad for them in the 1980s. So, they banded together and did everything they could to make the species better known so that it wouldn't die out.
The population is now stable because more and more owners are taking care of the peacock goats. The species spread from Switzerland to Austria and Germany. At the Hirschstetten Flower Gardens Zoo in Vienna, they are prominently presented in the historic farm complex. The aim is to contribute to conservation through breeding.
Not only does this one endangered breed of domestic animal live at Hirschstetten Zoo, but there are also several endangered breeds in the setting of a historic farm to which they fit in well. Keeping and using these breeds gives them the future they need to survive.
Hirschstetten Zoo is home to not only endangered domestic animal breeds but also wild animal species, many of which are threatened. For example, in the palm house, you can see very different species.

So, you can see that zoological gardens can ensure the survival of both wild animals and domestic animals. This is important in both cases. Wild animals preserve ecosystems and domestic animals preserve cultural history. Without institutions like the Hirschstetten Zoo, this wouldn’t be possible.
