Hydraulic Vise using car jack

- My old vice isn't work as good as it should be so I decided to make new one.
I took materials from the scrapyard. The jack has capacity about 5 tonnes.
I suppose that it hasn't so much capacity but it should be sufficient for my needs.
The whole vise weighs about 40 kg/90lbs.
If you have a question to me about this vice, just let me know in the comment section.
That vise it’s a lot better than anything I have seen before and easy to maintain. Excellent job!
Thanks :)
I LIKE THAT!!! Very KEWL!!! The ONLY thing I can see that you'll probably wish you had done would be to harden the JAW FACES. Get a pretty good pile of WALNUT hulls, and bust them up good. Mix them with DRY PLAY SAND and powdered-up charcoal...all mixed together good. Put the mixture in a metal tray big enough to bury the parts in several inches all around in the mix. Have a heavy wooden paint stirring stick. Open up a hole, in the mix, for each part to harden. Take an oxy/Actlyn torch (or a coal fired forge), and heat the metal part to at least a bright orange and immediately, with tongs, place the part into the hole and imediately put a mound of mix on top of it. The mix MAY start popping, so make SURE to wear your PPE...& don't squeeze the parts hard with your tongs. You'll bend and/or put marks into your metal, at this temperature. Leave the parts alone for 12 hours. This step opens the pores of the metal and injects carbon into the skin of it. You're CASE HARDENING them. Them take the parts out and slowly re-heat them till they just barely get a tinge of red and quit. Put them back in the mix and put a mound over them again. Forget them for another 12 hours. This anneals the steel, so it won't be brittle. This "home version" of "Case Hardening" works quite well. It will run the Rockwell hardness way on up the scale! This is better than the (( easy method of heating the metal and plunging it into a bucket of oil. Then re-heating it a tad to anneal it. )))(y'all take a tip from an old tool & die maker...use Crisco shortening to tap with. Load a pill bottle with a few fingers of Crisco shortening...(like you cook with). Pull the lid off and dip your tap into it and put the lid back on. Now tap your hole. You dont heat up your tap, you dont have Tap-Free dribbling on your shop floor and all the mess that usually happens, when you tap a hole...and you can "power'tap" in a drillpress that way, too. ((For aluminum, use Turpentine for tapping)). Again...I love the concept and a flawless training video! VERRRY NICE work! And thanks again for making the video and posting it!
I love it, I'm for sure building one asap, the #1 part of vices, they suck having to turn them forever to accommodate a wide piece, not only does this design eliminate the opening process time it looks like it has some crazy strong grip. Amazing professional looking final product man
Thank you :)
very well done ! it reminded me how much i miss the old KMarts as i bought a couple f their branded hydraulic jacks over 35 years ago and they still work like new ! plus they came in a cheap blow molded plastic case that keeps the handle with the jack i think i paid like 13 dollars for a 1 ton back then just a simple bottle jack yet it got me out of a few jams over the years pulling a variety of trailers with my truck as the jack was always in the bed of my truck when i travelled
Wow I envy guys like you who know exactly what they want and put their ideas to work to come up with something like this. I would probably have the patience but not the brains to build such a tool. Spot on mate.
Thank you 😁
Outstanding! I once read "It's only a good idea if you act on it." Well, that's a great idea!
It's beyond my skill set and ability, but I'm going to take a swing at it.
Well done sir!
Thank you 😁
I’m definitely going to machine this workholder for my school project. Thanks for sharing
Bloody brilliant, I have an old bottle jack I bought 40 years ago when my first car had no jack. I also have a large engineers vice that has been tortured and the screw and knuckle have been damaged beyond repair so some clever engineering and it will be fantastic! Thank you, I would never have thought of this!

That is the coolest bench vise I have ever seen built before. Wow good job. I will adding one of these types to my own little shop one day.
You are a very smart man I love watching your video. It helps me as a grandmother with a 14 year old granddaughter I show her that even being poor doesn't stop a person from making things they need and want plus I love showing her even grandma can do a man's job so for that I Thank you keep making video. And I will be abull to keep making things I need😜
You have a welder?
This man has definitely used an angle grinder before! Great video, thanks for sharing.
thank you 😀
Definitely! And I should know, my right arm is twice the thickness of my left arm - and guess why.... :) Great build.
I just finished watching your video and all I can say is wow i can't wait to make this with my granddaughter
awesome video and I do like that he did all of this with scrap metal
John...here lately, I personally, have found that OLD STEEL is formulated better than this new junk! It doesn't hit you in your back pocket as hard, as new, either!
seeing this video, makes me want to go out and get some old/used steel
Great idea. I love the ease of retractability. Also, I would extend those claws to both sides and position the vice far from the table.
Thank you 😀
You have serious skills with the grinder! 😲
Me gusta el proyecto.. Amigo..
Did you modify the jack? They don’t usually work on their side.
just add some oil to work in this position. From what I remember, less than 50ml was enough for me.
Great stuff sir.. Looks like you've used an old ratchet for the stubby handle.. Love it.. You have a gift..
Thank you very much:)
Is good
Clever , and your bloody good with that grinder, your a gun with what you make
Thank for shear this method sir, take a lot of work, but it is very convenience, and very hand help to use, i will follow your foot step👍👍from my❤to you .
I'm glad you smashed that pipe at the end. I was watching the video and wondering if it would. Really nice build! I want one.
The vice is really strong and works without any problems :) Thank you for the comment :) Regards
What a good idea ! I have bought all tools I need to do imitate, but I am not a craftman
Thanks for the video. I found a 6 ton hydraulic jack a few months ago. I know exactly what I'm doing with it now.
I'm glad you liked 😀 6ton will do a good job 😀
Quite a nice change from the normal boring narrated videos , you really do just get on an do it and it shows you dont need mega expensive tooling or brand new steel ..great job ..
thank you very much:)
This guy will make anything in no time 👌 keep up the good work man
Thank you 😁
today i have just started making one of these vices it is a good idea..
well done mate ..
im going to make a bending attachment that i can incorporate in to this vice and a press attachment as well
I'm glad that the movie came in handy :) Share your photos when you're done, good luck :)
Dear, how you did to it jack work in horizontal ? you put more oil ?
Yes, just add some oil, in my case 50ml was enough :)
@@WorkshopFromScratch , you is great great.... i send an regards.
Thank you:) Regards :)
Plenty of room for pipe jaws! Helluva vise man! Great idea
Made in poland nr 2 (Powodzenia w tworzeniu nowych idei ) :)
You are ONE SMART ENGINEER!!
Very ingenious. Thanks for sharing your build. Wonderful job on a great idea!
Thank you very much 😀
Between you and made in Poland I truly wish I had a good metal supplier so I could atleast attempt what you 2 accomplish. Keep the great vids coming. I need to add projects to my backlog.
Thank you :) As for the metal supplier, look for where there is steel recycling, I buy from such points and then you can save a lot :)
Damm fine effort! Excellent result. Now all you need is a stronger bench top
Thank you very much. The table is unfortunately too weak I have to replace it. Best regards 😀
Damn bro, lovin that “Frankenvise!” What a great idea...
You've gotten possibly the best videos.
You build the most interesting things, I just wish you put some measurements for the various hole sizes and screws. maybe a PDF download. Great videos.
Wow very cool build, great work sir.
Thank you :)
I think there is probably a way to make the little screw on the bottle jack easier to grab/release, and that vise just might be undeserving of that little bottle. You could put an air jack on it or something that is a little more flashy if you wanted. Overall absolutely AMAZING quality build.
There is always something to improve :) The vice is already a year old and I'm happy :) If one day I break down, I will build one again but I will use a hydraulic cylinder with pneumatic drive. Thank you :)
I'm impressed by most of his work but I'm trying to figure out why his welds look like that. Tip angle? Travel speed? Settings? I'm getting a lot better results even when I use flux core, minus the extra bb's of course.
Somebody get this guy an old Bridgeport mill!
I have an idea he could just build a really nice one!
Bravo estetski i zasticeno odlicno
Somebody buy this guy a plasma cutter!
Seriously though, great work and a stout build. I personally prefer to minimize the grinder dust in my work space and would have gone more with plasma than cutoff wheel, and I would prefer a design with a fixed rear jaw and the front jaw moving. I realize much more complex design, so maybe impractical.
Nice job overall.
Good job. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you 😁
Vrlo lijepo, inventivno,bravo!
Thats one hell of a vise. Now all you need to do is turn it into an air drivin vise. Instead of manually jacking it to close use air to close it.
Thanks :) I will leave it as it is, but I will build a second one with the drive, as you mentioned, but in order not to repeat and similar movies, I will try to get a different construction:)
Beautiful and very useful for everything 🥰thanks for sharing your ideas.
Awesome job!
Thank you 😁
Great job, very solid build, because it's so solid and well made I'd have fixed it to a RSJ sunk 15" in concrete.
Thank you :) I have to use your idea as soon as possible;) Regards
Good design! Nice job
Thank you:)
Very good idea. I’ll make this with a few modifications. Great job
Thank you :) greetings
Nice but how much better and maintenance free is in comparison to a regular multipurpose screw vice?
Ficou um belo trabalho parabéns meu amigo 🙏
Wow! Fantastic build! Thanks.
I'm glad you like it :) Thank you :)
Fantastic job, dude! Really well done! 😃
Just subscribed!
Thank you very much 😀
Small vice but good idea
Get a welding screen for your weld shots, would love to see vids like that
Man, that's better than just a vise, that could be used a press, too. What is that, 12, 20 ton jack? I was thinking you were going to show off when you put that pipe in it by just crushing it flat. Looks like I need to start looking for some heavy steel, have almost everything else. And it looks a hell of a lot easier then twisting the screw on a vise. And you don't have worry about breaking cast iron like most vises are made.
Thank you for the comment :) I am very happy with the flaw, it has a lot of strength and can also be used as a press :)
Muy buen trabajo, saludos desde España
Muchas gracias 😀 Saludos
Hey with a bit of time with my everlast welder I can make one of these with your thoughtful instructions. Thanks.
I am very happy that my films will be useful to someone :) Regards:)
Awesome project bro
Thank you very much 😀
love the idea, now i will have to make me one
Hi, does the hydraulic jack need to be modified to work horizontally? Thank you.
This guy really love to drill and fill holes ;^)
It’s called plug welding
Making stuff to help you make more stuff!
I love it.
Perhaps you could make a removable V-block arrangement that goes under the regular jaws, that you instal to hold pipe and bar?
I will give this vise to my brother who has asked me to build it for some time, so soon I will build a second hydraulic vise in which I will try to realize your ideas :)
Very genuine and cool. You’re a genius!!!
Super sprzęcie. Dobra robota .
Dzięki :)
This was nice to watch. Great work!
Thank you :) Your movies are also nice to watch :)
Nicely done, now I want one.
Excellent job
Thank you very much :)
Very Nice! Congratulations! Continue making tools...👏👏👏
Thank you :)
Genius I Like it
Great concept, though not sure the use justifies the robustness of the build I think a hydraulic assisted vise would've been better since it takes so many pumps to close it down on a project, also would have like to see some actual clamping force benchmarks compared to a regular style vise, but along with serviceable clamp jaws.... But that's just my two cents after seeing many other vise builds
Thank you :) The vice is very strong and sometimes you have to be careful not to damage something, despite the fact that the actuator is of poor quality and one of the cheapest, I intend to change to one that does not require so many moves to pull out :)
bardzo dobry pomysł, pozdrawiam serdecznie.
Great job building this! I also have a RUclips page building useful stuff like tools, sawmill and a quad truck so I always appreciate finding other channels with similar content :) Thanks for posting. I just subscribed!
Thank you 😀 Thank you for the information I will definitely visit your channel :)
workshop from scratch Right on thanks! I’m looking forward to more videos and projects from you :)
How well did it work I have never had any luck laying a bottle jack down
Just add some oil and the jack works horizontally :)
Wow this is amazing
Thank you :)
Mostly you use wire feed MIG but sometimes use TIG. What determines which, the material?
I like tig welding and this is the best method for me, but it's expensive so I use the mag method more.
I've got to ask, Does the slice on your arm have anything to do with an angle grinder?? lol I once dropped a running grinder with a cut-off disc on my foot! and yea.. I was wearing flip flops... I don't think I need to say more... Anyways, cool project!
Kolejny świetny projekt :) Gratuluje !!
Dziękuję :) Pozdrawiam 😀
Zip
What kind of welding machine do You use? Is it a mig with flux?
duuude do you maybe got some measurements? Would be an awesome gift for my dad his workshop
New sub. Watching the whole process now. Awesome, great work!
Thank you:)
Very nice
Thanks :)
A grinder and paint makes you the welder that you ain't
Today we have a treat especial....
I think this would come in really handy for me. I want to try making this with my everlast welder.
Congratulations!!!
Masterpiece!!!
CONGRATULATIONS FOR VIDEOS = Need to modify the hydraulic jack? Reverse oil inlet
Muchas gracias 😀
very nice now make a swivel mount for you truck hitch
Je veux le même !
Bravo 👍🏼
