SONGS:
"Mt. Coronet" (Pokemon Diamond / Pearl / Platinum) - Go Ichinose
Sab challenged me to cover this tune, it's gotta be one of the most unique Pokemon tracks out there. This tune really differs from the usual Pokemon song structure because it really doesn't have any repeating parts or a distinct form. Sure there are some sections that are somewhat segmented together, but the whole chart just flows together, trading melodies between parts seamlessly. This cover has got to be one of my most intricate covers to date, and it was challenging to arrange.

I ended up staying pretty true to the original song for most of the beginning of this track. Since this song is pretty obscure, straying too much from the source material the very beginning wouldn't allow people to recognize the song or make the connection of "oh yeah I remember this song!", so I saved the deviations for later. Mt. Coronet is a unique place in the Sinnoh region. You hear this song probably only once in your average playthrough of this game, as you're ascending the mountain to confront Team Galactic and Dialga/Palkia/Giratina. The atmosphere of the snow combined with the music creates a "race against time" feel, and I tried to keep that in this cover.. for the most part.
There are some parts in this cover that are blatant rip offs of "Lingus" by Snarky Puppy... and I'm totally okay with that. I wanted to experiment a bit more with some synth sounds after taking a summer course at the Berklee College of Music involving synthesizers, and understanding how they work / how to craft tones on them. While I'm still having some trouble getting the exact sounds that I want, synthesizers are really cool, definitely expect them more in future covers. Probably not a ton more stuff like this kick-ass bass synth, but we'll see :3
Mixing all the different elements of this cover was a big challenge. I've been working with headphones for a long time, which are not entirely accurate when it comes to mixing the bass and sub-bass ranges of songs, so combining the two bass elements of the synth bass and the electric bass were somewhat challenging. In the end, I chose to let electric bass take a lot of the bottom end, while emphasizing the "buzzy" top end of the synth bass. It was a challenge getting the saxophones, epiano, and the acoustic piano to all have their own distinct spots in the mix, especially when all playing at once. However, a lot of these instruments have really cool sounds when they are blended together and playing unison, so I decided to keep those present in the mix.
insaneintherainmusic You certainly did this piece justice.
Really good! :)
This sounds so good
insaneintherainmusic I mention Corey Henry last video and you go and rip off lingus... WHAT HAVE I DONE??? hehe joking joking! 3:19 is where its going down hehe.
Jazz musicians quote, its what you do; thats the only real quote I could find from Lingus to my ears is that bass rhythm. I'm sure there may be more but I couldn't hear anything outrageous and I've listened to Lingus many many times. Saxophone harmonising playing melodies doesn't count as ripping it off haha.
I'll look into "help make me" more videos on Patreon! :)
***** Thanks man :)
TobyEllisSongwriter Dude, I turned on the artist radio for Snarky Puppy on Google Play Music, and I heard some stuff from Cory Henry's album First Steps, and I got addicted to that. And yes, that part around 3:20 was very blatantly from Lingus... but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the song ;)
I'm so happy how this perfectly translated into a Jazz cover! Amazing job!
***** Gen 4's soundtrack was already on the verge of Jazz to begin with, and with Insaneintherainmusic's magic touch, this masterpiece was born
EpicNico Just wait for the imminent Gen 4 album
***** Jazz is a language after all.. ;)
I totally agree!
+insaneintherainmusic Will there be a gen 2 album too? :D
I wholeheartedly believe that the DS generations were the best. Great story, great graphics, great Pokemon, great characters, and all around unique. I loved the mix between 2D and 3D, and the sprite and model work. I loved the off-beat, darker stories, and deeper, more thought-out characters. I loved the post-games.
I even loved that brief little story arc at the beginning of BW with the Musharna, and the initial reveal of Tornadus/Thundurus, and the cutscene where Cyrus summons Giratina. I love the atmosphere in Eterna Woods and the Haunted Chateau. I loved that snowy route in northern Sinnoh. Sinnoh and Unova are just amazing, well-designed regions, unlike the slapped-together pretty mess that was Kalos.
Everything was just so perfect.
And while they aren't my favorites, I think many people can agree, HGSS are THE Pokemon games.
Fufu The Gargoyle I can't agree more. Gen 4 is a legend.
Platinum still has the best post-game of any Pokémon game to date. Yet for some reason, they refuse to replicate it in later games.
FlameUser64 leaf green/fire red had great post stories, but yeah it's sad they never use post-game stories anymore
Platinum was the first mainline pokemon game i had. Would probably still be playing it these days if i knew where it had gotten to.
Just play it on an emulator! I still play Diamond on my PC xD
Gen 4 is by far the jazziest of them all! ;D
PAXperMortem Even though I am not a fan of the word "jazzy", I have to agree!
Sorry I know this is a year old, but what word would you use instead? I don't know much about music terms so I'm curious.
jkSam I would use Saxy. Saxy as hell.
jkSam, if I didn't want to use the word "jazzy", I would just say Gen 4 has the most jazz-styled or jazz influenced music.
Well, also home to some of the most intense battle themes as well
Sinnoh from a point of view of cryptic plot, mythology, aesthetics and melodies, is absolutely excellent. A region much deeper and more successful than the others, although very concentrated in the LORE. On the things said in Sinnoh, a large part of the the whole existential conception of an individual and of the Pokémon world. Also the other regions are beautiful, but Sinnoh on the philosophical and cosmological level is more important.
Sinnoh and Hoenn are just awesome. Sinnoh is amazingly beautiful and varied. Yet I find Gen's 3 story more heroic and powerful that Gen 4's. Because Team Magma and Aqua are more raw than Team Galaxy, because Rayquaza is so intense, because routes often feel very adventurous, because the climate often goes off, because we could dive (lol, I missed diving so much in Sinnoh), etc. I feel like the Gen 4's conceptors put the accent on beauty while Gen 3 was impressed with catastrophe. I can't imagine how amazing would the story of Gen 3 be if transposed in Sinnoh.
I would call this your crown achievement, taking a lesser known and almost non-melodic song, and just writing a completely new song to it, but you'll do it again in a week. Awe inspiring man.
Crown? Do you mean...
Coronet?
Ro Panuganti non-melodic??
Definitely not a new song
Definitely not non-melodic
This song is ABSOLutely amazing.
Julia Stadeker I'm disappointed that this comment has less attention than it deserves.
obamasnow
When they remake gen 4, they can only use your music. They can't use their remake music.
Gen 4 was known for its pianos
This guy uses pianos
Everyone's criticisms are invalid.
+dinkleburg
can't argue with that logic
dinklebuuurg...
...DINKLEBERG!
...you cannot hide from this vgm fan... ; )
+dinkleburg
I agree completely.
That Piplup bead mockup was adorable
I love Perler bead creations. I've made a bunch of others since that time, and most of them are attached to the wall now!
Nintendo Hire this man
I'm so glad i played Undertale, because it led to hearing all your awesome covers. :D
+Manel Miquelino Likewise! I'm glad it exists so more people were able to find my channel :)
Hey! Same here :D
+insaneintherainmusic Undertale covers are definitely the way to get people to notice your channel, that's why I'm here after all lol
+Manel Miquelino
same
Asriel Dreemurr Serial Murderer. . .
Comparing this to the 2020 version and wow. Your mixing and mastering have improved a whole lot, and your ability to take the scaffold of this original and add so much character with the full Sinnoh Fusion Ensemble is amazing.
YO THIS IS DOPE!!!
The4thGenGamer - Your Daily Dose of Anything Pokémon You are the 4th gen gamer after all :3
I love the attention you give to gen 4. By far my favorite generation of all time! subbed!
Never in my life would i imagine myself headbanging to jazz. This is just so metal imo 🤘
I just realized how they made gen four music. They locked carlos in a room with a piano.
Absolutely diggin' the bass synth action at 1:34! Thanks for making this a thing!
Last summer, there was a period in which my autoplay would always end up on your channel within 1.5 hours of music listening, guaranteed, my starting genre made no difference.
I thought it was over...
Today, autoplay has brought me to this video 3 times. It redirects me to another sinnoh cover, then redirect me back to this video again.
Sometimes autoplay really nails it.
Thanks for the ❤ !
I had hoped to mention this to you during MAGFest but our paths did not cross this year. Maybe next year :)
That opening for the drums was killer, true jazz form, this whole piece is very well done, how have I not heard this sooner?
Thanks a bunch! :)
What a great song and cover! I swear, DPP has like the best soundtrack ever!
ElitexxRainx Gen 3 is slightly better imo. DPP is great, still.
You're fulfilling my whole "Pokémon Jazz" playlist. Almost alone. Thanks.
Happy to provide the music for ya, man. Pokémon jazz is the BEST.
The Calm before the Storm
I wish I had a fraction of the talent this guy has. Good job.
the left hand and percussion at 3:20 sound like lingus by Snarky Puppy
It's totally inspired by that tune!
Came down here to look for someone thinking the same thing.
THANK YOU
i was gonna say the bass line at 1:34 is definitely inspired by it. It's a good inspiration to have!
I caught it at @1:34 as well! ;D So staaaanky
I was about to say too lmao
TOTAL "LINGUS" VIBES FROM SNARKY PUPPY! Love it, avid fan.
This dude's talented. Keep doing what you're doing... you just gained a new subscriber!
Snarky Puppy vibes!!!!!! Lingus I believe is the song.
You are insane... in a good way for sure! :D I'm always excited to see a new upload from you! Great job bro! :)
***** Thanks so much! I upload weekly, so you get weekly excitement from me!
This is fantastic!!!!!!!
Mike7493 Mike are you ok? did your neighboors survive the house fire? did your car gwet totaled?
C Porter Yes, Yes, and No. Why would you ask this here xD
Mike7493 you didnt make a vid for 8 days
Soooooo freakin amazing! I used to despise jazz (please don't hate) but hearing your music made me completely change my mind. Jazz is now one of my favorite genres with you being my fave artist in the genre. Keep up the good work Carlos, you're awesome!
HOLY.
MOTHER.
OF.
ARCEUS.
As someone who loves both jazz and Pokémon, you got yourself a subscriber! I wish I could thumbs-up this video more, lol.
+zt2ean Great to hear, welcome to the channel!
Holy crap this is so amazing dude. Not an easy song to play, let alone do a full jazz cover of. I'm so glad you decided to do this one, one of my favorite lesser known Pokemon songs
+ThatHal0Guy This was not an easy song to play, man, but I love how it sounds. Thanks for finding this song and listening to it :]
One does not simply listen to this without hearing the footsteps in the snow.
Really fun arrangement! Lots of fun and wacky stuff in this one, and all the layers really helped it come together. Plus, check out that non-standard piano tone, we in there.
Btw Carlos, you should put the script just below your camera so your eyes meet the lens. They were flirting to the right quite a bit.
SuperMCGamer Ayyy
And yes, I will fix the script. I am terrible at doing professional things without a script. But I will do what you say. Thanks.
As soon as I got the notification for this video I knew I had to come watch it. I replayed Platinum recently, and this, along with many other gen 4 songs, has recently become one of my favourite Pokemon tracks. It's just so unique. Your cover matches the atmosphere and overall feel of this song perfectly. Great work, man.
Connor Donovan Thank you so much, I really tried to preserve the atmosphere of this song, since it's one of the most important elements of the track! The snowy atmosphere and the climactic tension you feel climbing up Mt. Coronet.. so good!
insaneintherainmusic No problem man. Thank you for all your glorious covers. Keep up the great work.
Listen, I've never heard an insaneintherainmusic cover that I didn't like. Kudos to you my friend ! ! !
What a great arrangement! When I was listening the first time, I smiled like mad when I heard the "Lingus-y" stuff. Totally killer, as always!
concreteeater12 Ahh I'm glad so many people are getting the Lingus ripoff! Snarky Puppy is such a great band, and it's awesome that my music even makes people think of them :)
You just made my favorite Pokemon song, excluding battle themes, even more amazing. Thank you.
+Will Goffe Glad you liked this one! This is one of the covers that I'm the most proud of doing.
You are the Jazz God
This is the best jazz remake my ears have ever tasted!!!
Thanks a lot :)
Duuuuuude this works so well. I love it.
WHY IS THIS SO GOOD?!
Dunno man, but glad you like it :)
You are unbelievably talented
Thank you so much :3
I've listened to this like a dozen times.
Here's to a dozen more!
Whenever I see another piece from Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, I can't help but feel super excited before I listen to it. This was a great cover! Keep up the work man
Andrew Pono DPPt has GREAT music. Only second to the music of Gen 3 ;)
this is so f*cking good. You might recognize me from how often I comment on your videos at this point, and each one goes about the same:"Oh my god! This is AMAZING! Definitely your best!" While writing this, I realized that I don't really have a favorite one of your videos. My 'favorite one ever' is just the one I'm currently listening to! Keep it up!
Wonderful work mate, this really shows off your keyboard chops to an extent I haven't seen up until now. Very impressive and a great choice of synth sounds.
Soundole VGM Covers Trilian's got a nice variety of synths, although I'd still like a Moog Synthesizer someday...
Every time you post a new video I'm more impressed with your work. Awesome song and amazing jazz cover and arrangement.
Jack Mackey That's what I try to do!
Fantastic. Amazing version of an spectacular tune. Thanks for this
Thanks for listening to my arrangement!
You never fail to impress! What I really like is how many underrepresented tunes you do, and how well too. You have a lot of talent :)
+Wolfsabre Thanks a bunch :D
One of my favorite tracks! Thanks!
+Eli Frost No problem, this one was a huge challenge to make, and I'm glad you enjoyed listening to it :)
The nostalgia! This is so good
Thanks! Glad you liked it :)
Dang man, the fact that you did justice to a Pokemon song that hard to play is pretty amazing. The synth bass added a badass thing to this. The pretty melodic and well put together solo really got me.
Omg I love this song so much
I keep coming back to this cover, maybe my 14th time listening!
definitely my new favorite arrangement from you, great job!
MusicNoa5h I always hope that at least one person will find the next arrangement I do to be their favorite, it means I'm constantly improving!
Why is this so amazing...
Beautiful remix to one of the best Pokemon songs. You couldn't have said it better: the atmosphere in this part of the game is a brilliant race against time. You've captured it perfectly here!
It's amazing how much you've improved since your first videos. In arrangement, technique and even video editing. Congratulations, keep the amazing work!
Joao Fonseca I've realized that too, you know. It's also apparent in a lot of my VGM musician friends. A lot of improvement can happen over 3 years, glad you've noticed!
insaneintherainmusic By the way, I'd love to see more band videos, like the one you did for Pokemon Colosseum. It was amazing!
As ever, a fantastic arrangement! Stunning. This one actually reminds me of a few pieces from that Methany-Mehldau album. Certainly a good thing in my eyes.
+Thomas Seear that's what I like to hear, thanks!
Mt. Coronet already has an awesome theme, and you just made it better!
Keep up the good work!
I've never been a huge fan of jazz but these covers are amazing
Thanks! Really appreciate you giving jazz a chance :)
I loved this cover...(i love it as a pokemon theme generally anyways so your cover made it sound so much more unique in my ears) ...I also agree that this may be the most unique pokemon theme to date...It just sounds so pleasant....Have you heard the shinjo ruins edition of it?? Oh god if that ain't a piece of art....
+TheGreek Joltik The Sinjoh Ruins version is absolutely amazing. I didn't know it was a version of Mt. coronet until fairly recently, but yeah, it is gold.
This is some awesome fusion right here! Love your pokemon series of songs.
Thanks so much! Glad you like my Pokemon arrangements.
I looked around at the other covers of this song and this one is CLEARLY (emphasis in the 'clearly') the best!!!!!!! Great job!!!!!!!!! ;)
True story
i love that you have colosseum on your wall
MMMMMMM....T Coronet. Thank you for this, it cured the void in my musical portfolio, that void being the lack of an amazing jazz cover of something you wouldn't expect. From an aspiring jazz artist to a successful one, great job!
Damn... I felt like an "eargasm" :0
Don't forget to clean your ears after!
bruh this is amazing this is one of my favorite songs back when diamond and pearl came out and I got into jazz to like.....omg lol
+Ace Wolf Glad you liked, man!
No problem dude! :)
One of my favourite arrangment from your channel!
Thanks a lot, I liked making this one a lot!
ugh, so friggin good. if only i had an alto sax with my flute
this is literally the best video
Yo. Patroned. Keep doing what you do. Can't wait to see more.
AdventureArchives Thank you SO much for supporting me on Patreon :) It really helps me keep the awesome music flowing out every week :)
I know this is a 4 year old video but HOW THE HELL AM I ONLY HEARING THIS NOW?!? Mount coronet is literally my favorite song in pokemon history and this by far rhe best version of it. PERIOD.
Glad you found this! Stay tuned for an updated version of this song... this is one of my favorite arrangements ever, and I can’t wait to share what I’ve been able to do with this song with a live band!
@@insaneintherainmusic i honestly can't wait, I've been replaying platinum recently and that honestly sounds awesome. I'll totally keep and eye out for it!
waaa the arrangement is so original that is difficult to keep the trail of the game theme. beautiful!
Thanks so much! I hope that the extreme arrangement wasn't detrimental to the experience for you :)
From now on whenever I play Pokémon D/P/Pt I will play your jazz covers!!! They are that much better!!!
+Ðäñîel Lîghtþøürñe Awesome! I'd love to do more DPPt in the future.
thanks. 4th gen is my favorite and I love seeing really talented musicians take my generation's childhood memories into something more. Thankyou
This is probably your best work so far.
+GeccoXD Definitely one of my best. I don't have a favorite one of my videos, but this one is high up there.
Wonderful musicianship! Your left hand comping along with your solos is inspiring :)
Steven Morris You seem to have an eye for my left hand comping! Thanks so much :)
insaneintherainmusic I just love it when horn players can also comp so well!! I'm sure you're familiar with it, but there's an album with Miles Davis playing the piano- he's pretty good :D
Steven Morris I haven't heard that one, but I do know that most good horn players also play piano. Piano is so essential in the world of music theory, I imagine it'd be difficult to get by if you weren't at least somewhat knowledgeable in the ivory department.
insaneintherainmusic It's true! However, there have been some good attempts on guitar. Pat Martino had a good approach up for free online called "The Nature of the Guitar". Ultimately, however, I agree with you- the Piano is (currently!) the most logical way to go about it. Anyways, your keys and horn chops are both amazing! I love what you do.
After just 2 seconds of listeting to it i knew it was goning to be GREAT
Andro Apolo Socrates Thanks for appreciating :)
Guy, I love your songs. I'm having a tough time and your music is what's helping me , thanks
+MisterCheese Alubias That's awesome man, keep listening :)
My childhood played....
Absolutely lovely!
I am in utter disbelief that after a year of listening to this song on my InsaneInTheRain playlist, I finally noticed the Lingus references after looking at my phone to check the name of the song. :O Guess I'm a year late!
Man.... the Lingus references are super obvious in this one. Thanks for listening to it so much, anyway!!! :)
From the first time I heard it (sometime in 2015/16) to this day, this cover remains my favorite out of all of your songs. I didn't even know that the song had this much to offer until I heard this, and now Mt. Coronet is one of my favorite songs, so thanks for that :] also ur cool
wow. this is great music. I absolutely love it. I watch a lot of your videos. They are fantastic. Please make more.
Thanks so much! I make new videos every Saturday, and they're still coming out :)
The more I listen to this song, the more I fall in love with it. It’s just that good.
4:20 This piano solo was very striking. I like when you do things like this.
That piano bit made me cry 😢
I never really was a fan of Mt. Coronet, but I have to say this jazz cover made be absolutely love it! Plus, this cover was extremely well done; Good job :D
Chrisby 101 Thanks so much!
I'm really digging those piano tones! The editing in this video was really great also.
TheMaximumGuitarist Thanks so much! I've been working on editing quite a bit actually. Editing things is surprisingly easier when you have more clips.
Although it takes longer to sync everything up when you have more clips, it gives you a lot more options, which is always great when you are trying to emphasize the importance of a certain instrument at a certain part!
Fantastic!!
I want to listen to the jazz cover of Jubilife City!!
Dude, I REALLY love this. Thank you for this wonderful piece.
Thanks for enjoying :D
Yeah, it really was amazing. Good enough that I actually listened to it on repeat for a few hours while coding. Beautiful piece. Thanks for the focus boost :)
I honestly wouldn't mind a hacked version of DPPt with all your Gen 4 covers making up the soundtrack. Lol.
Oh my goodness this is beautiful! I absolutely ADORE gen IV and its music and I felt a tear when I saw all of your gen IV jazz covers. These jazz covers are fantastic, you deserve so many more subscribers.
Thank you so much for listening! Gen IV is so wonderful :)
THIS IS AMAZING
This is beautiful! Awesome man.
Every time a new Gen 4 cover comes out my day is made.
1:58 That was the coolest thing I have ever heard. Great Job!
I was just listening to the Route 216 cover and was about to suggest you do Mt. Coronet and then I saw this as a suggested video! I totally forgot this was already a thing
Dude I just realized, this is like listening to snarky puppy.
yes yes yes
+RougexShadow007 Yeah, I've seen them live and they are amazing.
yeah.. Lingus much. :D
Dude I just came to see the comments expecting this comment!
Matias Araya whoah, dude. Totally
This is just ... the best ... ever ...
Thanks man :) I just did a remastered version of this, which will be released on a big album sometime soon...!
Ooh, I'm excited!
