Ulu Mosque (Bey Pinari) Fountain In Harput
Because fountains are the most important architectural elements that provided the water needs of people in the past, they are among the most important architectural works in Turkish-Islamic cities. Therefore, The Ottomans, whose waters are known to be sacred, played significant roles in creating works of art that carried the architectural style of their time by ornamenting squares with fountains that were modest or luxurious reflections of water civilization in addition to significant roles in forming neighborhoods and streets in city centers. Because water is the greatest need of humanity, it has been aimed to meet this need in various ways for centuries and many structures have been created in line with this aim. The fact that these structures signal that especially Islamism place great importance on water and providing water to people is one of the greatest charity works increased this importance further. In Harput, which is the name of a region in history, many fountains were built and routes for fountains were created. Many of these fountains have survived until today. One of these fountains is Harput Ulu Mosque Fountain, which has a round-arched, vaulted shape and is located next to the yard of Ulu Mosque in Camii Kebir neighborhood, and it constitutes the main theme of our study. In this study, Ulu Mosque Fountain in Harput, which is located within Şefik Gül Culture House (Gülsen House) in Harput neighborhood of the central county of the city of Elazığ, was investigated in terms of art history. The study was initiated with a literature review. Accordingly, the investigation covered history and geography of Harput, development of fountain architecture, the detailed location of Ulu Mosque Fountain in Harput, its history, plan, materials, technique and ornamentation, the restoration process, the points considered during its restoration process, suggestions and conclusions.
