1989 estava iniciando no surf, mas ja sabia muita coisa sobre as ondas, pois fui criado na praia e quando não estava pescando estava pegando onda de peito. Mahalo.
I remember Buttons ripping v land. My brada Buttons said to call him the solo popolo, cause he was the only 1 in professionalsurfing! R I Paradise my brada! Love U. MK westside Oahu!
In the 60’s my mom used to surf here, her fav … while leaving me to negotiate Laniakea (where we lived) close out walls on my own. What a great little wave!
V land was like that. It could go from a zoo to 5 guys out and back to a zoo. You never knew. But if you checked it often..... You will score it perfect.
@riverruninn I got toooo many Westside memories.. I've surfed 3rd Dips when the only two people in the water were Perry and I..... for 2 hours. Jan 1989. I was introduced to him on a previous swell with a zoo crowd. He was pissed. Back then Dips was very unknown. He told me to let him know if someone gets in my way because he's looking for a fight... . 2 weeks later it was only us. Best four years of my life..... 87-91
When you moved out of the third house, my boys and I moved in. Seems like about the right time frame. We were living across the street on Iwia Pl. but had to move out. My boy Rocky, drummer for The North Shore Surf Band with Johnny Orr and Clement and Randy Mond, rented it and i moved in there. Spent years there surfing V-land and Freddies and Backyards and Boneyards. Perry Dane was still out there and eventually after a party we threw that he came to, became our friends and let us surf V-land. Jr. boy Mipono was also running the show out there. Very localized place and even worse than pipe was as far as how the locals ran it back then. V-land was so much fun. I scored it perfect before with no one out but me.
@@Lbckawiks1 Ive known Rocky since we were 10 years old in California. I rented a room from him at the VLand house for a year or so then moved to one of those houses behind the elementary school with the Price bros and Scott Betz. I played in a few different bands with Rocky and Randy or Clement. Even subbed in for a couple of gigs with "Us the North Shore Surf Band. One of my 1st surfs at VLand I was somehow all alone in front of a big set (for VLand) Perry and the boys start screaming for me to go. I wasnt really in position to catch it but with Perry yelling for me to go, I went. I went over the falls trying to drop in and cut up my back and shoulder pretty bad. I paddled back out and they kind of jokingly told me to go in because of sharks. After that I was never told to go in by Perry or his crew...which he did every time he paddled out to at least 10 Haoles. lol Mike
If you were going to rate the main North Shore surfs spots for quality of the wave and ride, Haleiwa, Laniakea, Pipeline and Sunset score a 10 while V-land scores a 5. Some nice barrel sections but frustrating and peaky as hell. The parking on the hill has been plagued with car break-ins for as long as I can remember.
Awwww I used to live across the street in 2009... That was my everyday spot... happy to got to be in Hawaii back in time
I first surfed Velzyland in the summer of 1962...we camped o the beach...
uuuuuf
Walking from your car to the beach was an experience! It felt like the wild west where anything could happen.
Those condos were sketchy af after dark😂

Yes, that is Shmoo
What sets Vland apart is the double up like at 6:11. Or at least so it seems from my POV, never having been there.
